Visiting Tibet is not easy. As someone who has studied the history of Tibet and its culture I wanted to ensure that I traveled with a company that would allow me to see as much as possible and offer a genuine understanding of Tibet. I therefore put considerable time into investigating the different tour companies on offer.

I finally settled with Snow Lion Tours for two reasons. First, their website conveyed a sense of professionalism and confidence. I was able to sense that the company had a genuine commitment to the culture of Tibet.

My second reason for choosing Snow Lion Tours was that I was impressed by the swift and detailed responses they were able to give to my email inquiries. After gaining an understanding as to what I wished to see and do while in Tibet they suggested that I take the Mount Kailas Saga Dawa tour.

Unfortunately, a few weeks prior to my leaving for Kathmandu the restrictions on travelers to the Kailas region meant that they were forced to cancel this tour. However, to ensure that we were not disappointed, Snow Lion Tours arranged a new Saga Dawa tour of Central Tibet (U-Tsang). This tour was more expensive than the original Mount Kailas tour, however the company covered the additional costs with no expenses being passed on to our tour group.

Snow Lion Tours had an agent in Kathmandu to arrange our travel permits and they kept in touch with us throughout the process. Upon arriving in Lhasa we were met by our guides and began our three week tour of U-Tsang.

The tour allowed me to visit pretty much all of the locations I have ever wanted to see in U-Tsang (Lhasa, Yamdrok Tso, Drigung Til, Mount Everest etc). The guides were extremely knowledgeable and able to answer any questions we had about the locations we were visiting.

Since Tibet is a physically tough environment in which to travel the guides also took steps to ensure that we were taking care of our health.

What I also appreciated about Snow Lion Tours was the sense that, when the tour was over, you had made new friends with the guides. I look forward to using their services again when I have the chance to travel to Amdo.

I highly recommend Snow Lion Tours as its services caters to a wide variety of travelers - from those for whom this is their first encounter with Tibetan culture to those who are seeking adventure, who might have an academic interest in Tibet and most importantly those who wish to undertake a spiritual journey.

In the last year I've been on two tours with Snow Lion, both excellent experiences. From the very beginning they cared about what our group wanted and did their best to accommodate all of our special requests - even when we sometimes decided something at the last minute while in Lhasa, they managed to make it happen for us.
Both tour guides I've travelled with - Drogar and Tondrup - were wonderful and knew so much about all of the places we visited, adding their own little anecdotes too for the personal touch. I stay in contact even now with Drogar - during our trip she became a friend as well as our tour guide.
I've traveled in and around Lhasa with a few different travel agencies, but I think Snow Lion has the complete package of everything you could want from a tour agency here. For any future trips I take to Tibet, Snow Lion will definitely be my agency of choice.

Given limited Tibet Tourism Permit (TTP) for non-mainland Chinese tourists, many tour companies are either Chinese run or cater to the mainland Chinese tourist. Their group itineraries reflect that. This is not the kind of experience we want. Normally, we’re independent travelers, but since we’re required to be accompanied by a licensed tour guide to visit temples and monasteries in Tibet, I want to support a Tibetan owned company and have a Tibetan guide who can give me the local perspective on Tibetan Buddhism. We selected Snowlion because I liked their proposed itinerary and they were very professional in communicating with us via email in the planning. We paid for a private tour for the two of us. Tenzin and Wangden helped us with the planning. The price was very fair.

We paid the deposit via paypal (very easy) and they arranged to have the TTP delivered to our hotel in Chengdu. TIP: Plan in advance as it takes at least 2 weeks to get the TTP issued. But be warned that the borders between China and Lhasa can close at anytime, so even with TTP, there is a risk you may not be able to enter Lhasa.

Our Tibetan guide speaks excellent English and was incredibly patient in answering all our questions about the different architectural and Buddhist designs. We noticed some of the guides went through the temples and explanations very quickly. Since we were interested, he gave us very detailed explanations at each site, which we appreciated.

There were certain Tibetan souvenirs I wanted to purchase and he was great in taking us to local Tibetan shops and artisans so we can get high quality souvenirs. One night, he stayed with us until after 7:30pm before going home.

We were here for a 4 day 3 night visit and would love to come back and see more of Tibet with Snowlion. Book with them with confidence, you’ll have an amazing experience in Tibet.

The thing that struck me was the lack of transparency with this company. In short, they are sneaky people to deal with.

I have booked an impromptu trip a month before for my dad and myself and selected this company based on Trip Advisor reviews and also the fact that my very own hotel concierge was not the fastest with emails. Big mistake.

Firstly, my initial flight was cancelled by China Airlines and Snowlion said that they had to charge me for a wasted trip to the airport. I readily agreed to pay. Upon arrival at Lhasa, Tenzin told me that it was usually ¥500 but they would give me a 50% discount. I felt fleeced off when Shangrila Lhasa told me that a typical airport transfer is only ¥250. I would have paid if they told me the fee honestly without spinning a tale.

Next, they sneaked in a clause to say that "taxi fee in city" is not included. This means that you would have to pay for your own taxi to Potala Palace and this is something that I don't understand as it defeats the point of booking a tour if I am supposed to get my own transport. I ended up paying extra obviously.

I think the Tibetans have a lot going for them but this is hardly something that should be tolerated. Nobody likes tour packages that has hidden clauses.

I strongly urge travelers to Tibet to be wary and stick to companies that your hotel concierge recommends no matter how slow your concierge might appear to be.

For Kate: Thanks for your review. Yes, you did 3 days Lhasa tour with us. Unfortunately, we only heard these issues once you returned to Singapore; therefore, we had no chance to make your trip the way you wanted. If you have mentioned about it while you were in Lhasa, I’m sure we could have made you happy. After we knew that you had some issues with pick up fee and taxi inside Lhasa, we offered you that we would refund whatever you think was not fairly charged which was 35 USD for pick up and around 14 USD for taxi inside Lhasa. For readers, let us explain the situation: We were very surprised to hear that there were hidden clauses from us. This is the first time we heard of it in our 10 years of business experience. Anyway, both your travel consultant and our manager contacted Kate and explained everything in detail that these small charges were fair and reasonable. In order to show our sincerity, we even offered her to refund those 35 USD + 14 USD. Unfortunately, she didn’t get back to us at all and ignored our offer. 1. Regarding pick up fee, Kate’s flight cancelled and rescheduled for the next day and she didn’t inform us early enough, so our guide and driver had been waiting for her from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. It is around 80 km from Lhasa to the airport and it usually takes almost an hour to drive one way, so our staff (2 people) spent almost 6 hours to pick Kate up. I’m not sure how it works in Singapore, but 2 people plus one car work for a tourist for 6 hours. We think that a small fee of 35USD is reasonable and fair. 2. It is cheaper if your hotel arranges a transfer, but as we mentioned Kate in e-mails, foreign tourists can not take taxi by current permit regulations. We have to arrange tourism licensed vehicles for airport pick up. Even if Kate takes hotel taxi against regulations, taxi driver will NEVER wait NOT wait for 6 hours at the airport. 3. Regarding taxi fee inside Lhasa: we offered package price which clearly stated which days we use car and to where. And we also clearly stated taxi fee inside Lhasa is NOT included. We did not arrange car for one day of Kate’s tour because places such as Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple are in a walking distance, and most of the tourists enjoy walking. Second reason, we always try to make package price cheaper whenever possiable. There is no need to provide private car on this day, it is a lot cheaper to take a street taxi if a tourist is tired of walking. SnowLion Tours Team

I reached out SnowLion on April 4th 2016 for an Incredible Everest tour it starts at June 27th. I emailed them our $2500 flight tickets confirmation on April 12th, paid $560 deposit on April 20th (they have never issued us a receipt of the deposit). After we submitted all the permit application documents on May 5th, we expected the permits would be issued by May 30th because we were told that normally take 3 weeks to process the application. Eventually they issued our permits on June 20th and we received wrong ones on June 24th.

They just ruined our trip without offering any compensation of the over $3000 cost of flight tickets and deposit.

SonwLion has never addressed our concerns in a timely manner and handed our issues responsibly. They reply emails every other 5 days or longer.

If you choose them, hope you have a better experience.

Yuan (Chinese nationals, 2 people) booked a tour with us, but later changed their mind and blackmailed us to get their deposit back. Here what actually happened: Yuan emailed us and confirmed to join a group tour to Everest Base Camp. They agreed with the tour itinerary, dates and prices based on the number of people in the group as well as our conditions. 2 other people joined this group, so there were 4 people including Yuan. But around a week before their tour begins, Yuan started making different excuses to cancel their trip and get the deposit back. Everything was ready for their tour, and their permits were issued, too. Since it is a group tour, we can not refund deposit of those who cancels in the last minute. It is impossible to find replacement for those who cancels as it takes around 2-3 weeks to process permits. All our cancellation policy is CLEARLY written in disclaimer which Yuan signed upon booking her tour. Since Yuan canceled the trip in a last notice, our company had to cover the rest of the payment which Yuan did not pay. It is because we can not ask their travel mates to pay more due to Yuan’s cancellation. That's why we had to use Yuan’s deposit to cover the price difference PLUS we had to pay big portion of their tour from our own money. So we arranged the tour for other 2 people and we kept their tour price like it was 4 people in the group. Again, all our cancellation policy is written in the disclaimer, and Yuan understood she could not get her deposit back easily. Regarding the permits time and wrong permit that Yuan is mentioned about. We delivered Yuan's permits to her parents in Beijing 5 days before their departure time, so there is no issue of not getting permit on time. As for the wrong permit, that was another baseless blame that she tried hard to get their deposit back. There is no wrong about the permits and we told her we double checked their permits and there was no wrong info on it. Anyway, later we called Yuan’s parents in Beijing and they told us that Yuan was not coming Tibet at all! Then we realized that Yuan actually changed her plan before and all the issues that she brought us were just her trying to get the deposit back. Yuan even blackmailed us that if we did not give her money back, she would post bad reviews online. For this, as usual, we told her she has rights and freedom to write whatever she thinks about us. We did our best in our end, we are open to improve our service for genuine suggestion from our clients. But we do not take any blackmail.

Recently, I returned from a 10 day trip through the Tibetan region of western Sichuan province known as Kham which was an amazing view into vibrant, living Buddhist communities. SnowLion worked with me to create a custom tour. I specifically wanted to support a Tibetan owned and operated agency which I believe is critical as tourism continues to grow rapidly in Tibet Their communication in planning and organizing the trip was prompt, friendly and professional which built a trusting relationship from the start. This was important since I needed to wire payment prior to the trip since we started in Kangding, a city which is a far distance from their home office in Xining. From beginning to end, all went smoothly - they also planned flights to and from Chengdu. Our guide, Tenzin, spoke excellent English as well as Tibetan and Chinese. Both our guide and driver were so helpful, supportive and kind helping us form treasured memories of this beautiful place and people from monasteries of chanting monks and sand mandalas, nunneries, spending a night in a yak herding family's home, or driving over stunning mountain passes - incredible!

We were at the end of October-beginning November in Tibet doing a tour with Snow Lion Tours. We chose them because it is a Tibetan owned and staffed company. The tour was Sacred Cities and Heavenly Lakes 8 days-7 nights: Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse, Shigatse and Nam Tso. The experience was great! Our guide, Dolker, was a very good guide and she gave us clear and good explanations about the religion and Tibetan culture.
The accommodation was very good as well. They advised us for 3 stars hotels instead of budget hotel/guesthouse because it was going to be quite cold during the days we were going to spend there. We took their advice and we were very happy about their choice of the accommodation.

Wangden was very helpful during the organization of the trip answering all our questions and providing practical information for the trip.

If in the future we come back to Tibet we'll repeat with Snow Lion and we'll ask to go with Dolker again.

There must be others, like me, who found it daunting to firstly choose a Travel Company from all the others, and then arrange tour details, and pay deposit for tour all via internet! I chose SnowLion Tours because they were frequently recommended on other travel forums. I also wanted to support a Tibetan Tour Company. I also liked their website, it was well designed, easy to navigate and each tour itinerary gave lots of detailed information. And yes, I did compare my itinerary and price to other companies and SnowLion was still my choice. Tenzin, at SnowLion, answered all my questions clearly and the whole process of arranging the tour was straightforward and went like clockwork....our Tibetan Travel Permits were awaiting us at our Chengdu Hotel. Our guide, Paldon, was just an amazing, caring and personable girl, and we felt so lucky to have her! She was extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of Tibetan life, and she gave us a special insight into the religious heart of Tibet. Paldon never rushed us, we were able to take time to soak in the sights and sounds! We were able to experience many memorable moments due to her care and knowledge. Our driver was friendly and very obliging, he stopped whenever we wanted photo shots. He was a safe driver and kept his vehicle immaculate! Due to the earthquake in Nepal, we were not allowed to visit Everest Base Camp. SnowLion let us choose an alternative itinerary for the extra two days, no problem. Back home I am already checking out the SnowLion website for our next tour, so many choices!

Our guide Dolkar was very knowledgeable about local culture, religion and history with good communication skill in English, Together with Anna who was a lady from the company for Russian speaking clients and driver she provided us, a group of 9 from 6 different countries with flawless logistic support. as well I was very happy to have chosen SnowLion Tours for my first trip to Tibet in June 2014.

After numerous checkings of website and review for various tour agencies I came up with a short list of 3 agencies. Based on their itineraries and responses I finally chose SnowLion Tours for the 23 days' trip of Saga Dawa Mt. Kailash Kora. At the last moment to everyone's supprise Chinese government banned anyone's trip to the area where Mt Kaliash is located and did not issue any permit to go there. With very limited time until the orginal schedule was supposed to start SnowLion Tours put together an alternative very thorough and equally attractive itineray. The trip was excellent for me to be exposed to Tibetian people, history, culture, religion and food and not mention landscape.

I hope I can go again to Tibet soon for Mt Kailash Kora with SnowLion Tours
