We can highly recommend Dhondup's Tibetan Guide Agency, everything went very smooth from the beginning to the end.
At the end of Oct. we did a private tour from Lhasa to Kathmandu on Friendship Highway, for us it was a dream which came true!

Hi, I myself is diabetic too, with a bit of high blood pressure. I survived. Just remember to move slowly and enjoy. I even went to the base camp which is 5200m. The tour guide is very attentive and observing our health closely; to make sure we can enjoy our 10 days stay there.
However I would advice you to consult doctor about altitude sickness and maybe get some medication.
I personally took this chinese medicine "Rhodiola" which is in capsule form, 2 weeks before the tour.

We went to Tibet in the spring and used Tibetan Guide Tours. While they have a standard 1 week tour they will happily take you where you want to go in Lhasa for a few days. The guides are locals, flexible and will do things your way. And they all speak good English. Compared to the government run Chinese tours this group is very cheap, but don't let that put you off; you'll run into the big tour groups at the temples and be very glad you're on own.
Any thoughts from people who have recently traveled with either agency (in 2013)? We've gotten timely and friendly responses from both, and there is only a slight marginal difference in price. There's a recent review in 2013 about RTT which is not too positive, so slightly nervous about pulling the trigger. In addition, would you suggest that we book accommodation ourselves or have it included in the package? Woeser from RTT also suggested that the guide will take us around to show us...More

We were very happy with Road to Tibet. We did an 8 day tour in October 2013 and were very happy with the accomodations. We especially liked their choice in Lhasa in the Tibetin quarter. I really can't speak to whether or not you should book on their own. I would ask them directly about that one poor review - I did and was very satisfied with their answer. Feel free to PM me with more questions.

Guide for Shangri-La Area (24 Replies)
Guide's are a challenge to find in the Shangri-La area. We just used the services of one in late October that was good and reliable. Tashi Tsering is a young Tibetan guide who can arrange to your desired level, even to the Benzilan area. Contact: email@example.com

Thanks for the information. It's helpful when travelers give something back like that.

Who do you trust? (5 Replies)
I no longer need the Tibet forum but visited today just for curiosity. I was amazed that a thread has been running for several years about Access Tibet Tours and other tour companies. Complaints and compliments for all the tour companies seem to be rampant and that brings up the question: Who do you trust? If anyone has any guidelines of how you make your decisions with conflicting information, please share. At this point I tend to trust the positive posts but question the negative...More

Hi, I have not visited the Tibet Forum in a while. Some tour companies are renowned for putting in false recommendations. Or false complaints against a competitor. Very annoying and it makes your trust issue a very good point. Totally agree about choosing guides etc of Tibetan heritage. If you think something is suspicious use the report button and let the moderators sort it out. How do you sort out the fakers - you get to know their "style of talk" and report them. The problem is...More
