Great for shopping and photos !
May 2021 • Family
The street around the Jokhang temple is great for shopping (with many souvenirs shops with hats, jewellery and tankas). It’s also a great place for photos. A must see !

I really liked this shopping area. Spent time both perusing and purchasing, and also just watching the local people. If you want to take a picture, be sure to ask permission first. The people are lovely and generally accommodating but often less so with their children's photos.

"Shopping Street"

This is like the shopping belt with lots of local Tibetan shops and also restaurants. Also a place for observing the locals going about their daily lives.

totally worth the visit

This street gives a real look into Tibetan people's life and lifestyle, it is surrounding the temple, full of historical significance and full of interesting shops and narrow side streets. It can get quite busy but that is part of the fun in this street. It is like the hub of Lhasa.

To see the real Tibet get out and walk the street here. Hundreds of years of history. Very busy as expected. Lots of shopping and bargaining here.

Good all round experience
Oct 2019
If you want to sample true Tibet then other monasteries further out from Lhasa are better for that. However, if you are pushed for time and want to see various aspects all at once then this place has it ie both the religious aspects of the pilgrims plus the "tourist setting" with the numerous souvenir shops that surround it.
I felt I was intruding somewhat as it is an active place of worship with people coming in to pray (and outside on the streets too) and having to put up with a guide talking away to the foreign visitors. But then I feel this way about all temples/monasteries that try to balance everyday local life with educating the tourists.
