This is the other side of Purple Mountain. If you start walking up the road you are going the long way, take the cable car instead by going up the stairs. Many chinese will walk up the road to save money and frankly it is better for you, but if you are not fit, then the cable car is for you! At the Observatory you can either take the cable car to the next mountain top or again walk the path, but its a hard core walk! The total walk goes up 100 floors! There is food and gifts to be had at each point. If you are keen and walk all the way up then take the cable car all the way down. Its a great way to see Nanjing.

Pity but when we visited this site the day was "foggy" and could see almost nothing from the top. However, with a nice day it would be a good visit.

My friend drove us up the hill passed the old Nanjing wall to the observatory. The Carpark is not free anymore and observatory collects fees as well. We walked around the observatory in the hiking trails which is breezy and has great views of the city, Xuan Wu lake and the sun yet San memorial. It’s a very nice trip.

To be honest, the chair lift is the best part. For rmb60, you get a long distance return ride above pristine forest with great views over nanjing. I didnt time the duration but it feels like 20-30min one way.
The observatory is at the mid-station. It is a 10min walk away along a path. It costs another rmb15 to enter. Nothing much to see except a couple of astronomy contraptions and a viewing platform.
You can continue to the top station with the same ticket. Also nothing much to see. There is a rmb4 park with some corny sculptures arranged on steep slopes. Forget it.

This mountain's name pretty much translates to Purple Mountain. It's very beautiful once you get past the KFC located at the top of the mountain.

My husband and I are living in China temporarily and wanted to do a fun weekend activity so we were wanting to do the Purple Mountain temple for the day, but accidentally ended up here and loved it! The hike to the top was 3-4 miles, not sure, and we took the path that was mostly stairs. It was an amazing hike and felt good to be in Nature. Not many foreign tourists, lots of Chinese tourists. I would suggest wearing work out clothes and bringing a small backpack with lots of water. There are options to take cable cars but we loved to walk. Dont expect to be able to see the city very well from the top due to fog but it still is an amazing view. The artifacts around the top were also very amazing. What a random gem!

It was really hot(must be around 40C degree in that late Sunday afternoon 24th of July),with high humidity as well, you could imagine the challenge to climb ZiJinshan (mountain) in such a weather. But we managed it, thinking of the great exercise to our body, and helped by the welcoming trees and high density of oxygen (my daughter and myself). Such great view! All our efforts suitably rewarded! If you are interested in history, you can detour, to climb all those nice steps, to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's Mausoleum which also situates at Zijinshan Mountain .

if you don't have time and the heat is killing you...Use the cable car and enjoy the views on the top. You can also have a short walk there and discover a couple of nice corners
