We spent a bit of time here, admiring the structure, the construction, the layout as well as the entire floor plan of this well-preserved big mansion. It was beautiful. Very well-thought out layout in that era of 1600s. History revealed that the leaders of the Taiping Rebellion league stayed here.

Simply take a look at this map of the mansion, you can see there are a few entrances. Do check your entry & exit properly. Anyway, we came out at the back gate but there were many streets selling herbs. Also lots of things that we could buy:))

Tickets must be purchased. It took us an hour to admire the mansion. By camera-ready please.

Delightful classical Chinese garden in the heart of the Fuzi Miao area of Nanjing. Among the gardens of South China, the Zhan Yuan Garden is a little mini with nearly half of it rockery. As you walk through the carefully designed gardens there are 18 different scenes to delight in: long bamboo, green woods, garden hills, ponds and waterfalls, strange stones and so on. Meandering paths lead you to different parts of the garden and you never know what you will see around the next bend. Exquisite scenes and beauty surround you and leave you unaware of the city outside the walls. In fact you feel like you are in a painting - well worth a visit.

Get away from the hustle and bustle of Nanjing's Confucius Temple area by visiting this museum and lovely garden named Zhanyuan by Emperor Qianlong some 600 years ago
Great to visit in April before the heat and to see some spring flowers but there is an excellent bonsai collection that will be impressive all year round
Some information in English within the museum but if you want to get the most out of your visit read up about the history of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom before you go
Easy access from Sanshanjie Metro Line 1 station, go out of exit 4, turn right at Cafe 85 (top of the escalator) and right again out onto Zhongshan South Road. Then turn right again into Jinshajing,, right onto Zhonghua Road and finally left into Zhanyuan Road. It's a 10 minute walk

This is a very nice garden in the middle of a busy district. It starts with the museum about the history of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. To tell the truth, there is some information in English within the museum but it is rather scarce and I had to read about the Taiping Rebellion after the visit because I did not know anything about this part of Chinese history before and the Museum did not answer my questions.

Thus, I did not like Museum very much, but in the Zhan Yuan Garden I felt as in the Heavenly Kingdom. Fortunately, there were few visitors in the early afternoon (huge crowds came when I was leaving the place) and it was possible to enjoy the Garden in peace. This is a typical Chinese garden – in a relatively small space there is a lot of different miniature landscapes (see photos). In one of the buildings there was a musician playing Chinese music – I do not know, whether it is a regular part of the visit or whether I had just a good luck – the music harmonized with the beautiful garden.

I recommend the visit of Zhan Yuan Garden – combine it with the visit of a busy shopping area around the Confucius Temple and the Qin Huai River.

This beautiful garden is hidden inside the busy city of Nanjing. I enjoy visiting Oriental gardens and have seen a dozen on my trips. I would say the beauty of this one is right up there with the major gardens in Suzhou. It is well justified that Zhanyuan is one of the four most famous gardens in China.

The garden is maintained reasonably well, by China standard. The landscape is cleverly designed to be viewed from various angle as visitors stroll through the garden. There is basic washroom and food available but the nice cafes and malls are only 2 blocks away FYI. It is a great place to visit for an hour or two, followed by lunch/tea in a nice nearby cafe.

Zhanyuan is easily combined with a visit to Confucius Temple a stone throw away.

I came for the Taiping Museum and had come prepared for a negatively depicted account of the former christianity movement. But to my pleasant surprise and to the merit of the museum, it offers balanced perspectives. The earlier part of the exhibition is more biased-you would spot loaded statements like "...against the threat of western powers and influence". The later part is objectively worded and present varying perspectives, a more professional curation. Suspect it is an add-on to appeal to foreign visitors and increasingly discerning domestic audience. Overall, the museum provides an interesting insight to a little-known episode in China's history which had a definite impact on how China is like today in terms of treatment towards religiosity.

The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Museum is situated within the Zhanyuan Garden and is well worth a visit to read more about the Taiping revolt which saw the death of over 20 million people but whose leader Hong Xiuquan is seemingly regarded as a hero. The revolt saw the beginning of the end of the Qing dynasty. The gardens are attractively laid out with water features and not too crowded.

This garden does not begin to compare to the gardens of Suzhou and area, but it is a very nice garden in its own right. It does give a good introduction to the Chinese garden style, as it has the mandatory elements of water, pavilions, interesting stones and shaped trees/shrubs, as well as a moon gate and an area of bonsai.

Plus, it is close to the Confucius Temple/Imperial Academy area, so a visit there can easily be combined with a visit here.

Not sure why the location on the attached map is currently in the wrong location . . . the actual location is right by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom museum, and is shown as Zhanyuan park on Google maps.
