We went to the park east of Nanjing on a Sunday morning. We didn't know about the Plum Blossom Festival though. This means masses of people there. But if you turn right on a small path just before reaching the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, you can avoid these crowds and get to the small and picturesque Zixia lake. You can even swim there (which people really did in mid of February). It was absolutely worth it to relax a bit. The 20-30min walk from the metro station does not a lot of efforts. You can easily go there even with children.

This is a great place to wander through on your way to the purple mountains. The park itself is nothing to write home about but the lake is serene.
A perfect place for a picnic, the only negative point is that you are always in earshot of a local clearing his throat and spitting.

Very beautiful nature, you can swim there, so bring your towels and swimsuits! Water is clear and it is a very nice walk as well. One of my fav in Nanjing.

Nice lake for a China like. You can swim in it but need to walk 20 min up a hillside path to get there.

14 of us women (Americans, British, Aussies, German, Canadian, French, Swedish, and Finnish) that were expats in Nanjing, China at the time all trained for the Beijing/Great Wall of China marathon here for 7 months. It was our favorite spot around the city to train, as it had a climb of over 500+ stairs up the side of the mountain then we could run around the lake and tackle the stairs again. And all the while we people watched the most amazing people. We heard singing, and music playing, watched artists paint or draw the lake, we saw flashes of skin as people tried to hurriedly change out of their swim clothes back into their street clothes, and we even watched a surprisingly large number of Chinese who braved the lake during the coldest of times with snow on the ground and all. Actually I think it may have been my favorite place in Nanjing period :)
