The area
Neighborhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.

This unevenly paved and steep alley is great fun at any time, but for true hilarity wait until after rain. I positioned myself on the stairs that run parallel with the cobbles and watched many pedestrians waving their arms as they battled to regain lost footings on the damp morning I was there. It was also in the lead up to Halloween, so vendors were selling spooky paraphernalia in stalls, adding to the overall atmosphere. Thoroughly recommended

It will be good to take your photograph at the bottom of the steps next to Pottinger Hotel. You can then use the mid level travellator and then walk down.

Pottinger street offers such a contrast with Queens Road designer shops and luxury malls! It's hard to believe those two streets are side by side.
The street is very steep and is lined both ways by small outside stalls. It's quite touristic but what is sold is also for HK people and range from seasonal clothing and accessories (Xmas, Halloween, CNY etc) to bits and pieces such as hair accessories, ribbons etc.
It's parts like Pottinger street that make Central worth exploring, for the pleasure of getting lost in the meandering alleys.
For the traditionnal Hong Kong lovers, there are a lot of other small alleyways in that part of Central, with many of them running parallel to Pottinger street, in the direction of Soho.
They offer a stark difference with the hustle and bustle happening a few hundred meters lower and offer a glimpse of local life. Small vendors sell fruits and vegetables, old ladies display second hand wares on the pavement (not the gently used type!) and you can't help feeling you're in a more real part of the city, where money doesn't flow and people have to be creative to get by...

Pottinger Street is a historic street in the Central District of Hong Kong. Built in the 1850s and named after then Government Henry Pottinger, this is a Grade 1 historical location in HK. It is unique in that the street was built with stone stabs which slope upward with the contours of the land, giving the street a minor staircase like structure.
Locally, Pottinger Street is affectionately referred to as Slab Stone Street. It is fun to visit and walk not just to see the historic sloping steps but to also visit the shops which line Pottinger Street.
Here you find stalls set up during the day, selling costumes, wigs, fun attire, accessories and souvenirs during the day providing a bit of a street market scene. After hours, Pottinger is mostly emptied out and can been viewed and walked with less obstruction.
Overall, just a minor attraction that you might or might not pass by during your visit to Hong Kong. If you find the narrow lane street with stone slab steps, this is Pottinger Street.

Stumbled upon this street while looking for a place to have lunch. It was extremely busy as it was lunch hour.
Try and eat at one of the stalls off Pottinger Street.
There is the world’s longest escalator (Mid-Levels escalators close by)

...rather than up as it's very steep, poorly cobbled in places and gets extraordinarily busy, so take the escalators up and then head back down this way later on. There are lots of tat (great for fancy dress) and souvenir shops to look at as well as random stalls offering all sorts. Mostly though, it's just an interesting walk between towering buildings down an alley which seems to have resisted some of the change happening around it.

Flights of steps to walk up (or down depending on where you start). Take your time to walk up and do some shopping along the way.
Shopping is mainly roadside stalls selling knick-knacks
When you have reached the top of the steps, you can then turn right and walk down the overhead walkway which actually is next to the famous Escalators.
Have fun walking and walking!

It is difficult to imagine in the modern city of Hong kong, still keeping this nostalgic street.
As the whole street all used stone slab paved, it is also known as the stone slab street.
The stone slabs were designed to a high-low of irregular shape, did a non-slip role.
Perhaps because of the uneven road, especially mark the "off the high heels logo" as a warning on the street (see the below pic)
When u climb up the steps, u will see both sides packed with all kinds of shops, mostly to sell groceries.
Highly recommend to have a visit!

The shops along Pottinger Street (Slab Street) between Stanley Street and Queen's Road Street presently have brought out Chinese New Year items, items and decorations which are nice to see during the festive season. This particular section of Pottinger Street is very interesting at this time of year.
