Tin Hau Temple is one of the oldest religious institutions in Hong Kong. It also marks Yau Ma Tei's transformation from a humble fishing village to a bustling commercial area. The annual Tin Hau Festival is a big event. The open area in front of the temple is a popular hangout place among elder residents.

An interesting temple to visit in Ya Ma Tei is the Tin Hau Temple. This is a Grade I historic building that is open around 9am to 5pm daily.
There are many temples around Hong Kong dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea (Tin Hau). This one is interesting for two reasons. First, its location is very odd in the middle of Kowloon Peninsula. Second, visitors will find a nice Replica Nine Dragon Wall that is worth spending a few minutes to enjoy.
First, historically the temple was constructed around 1864 at what was once the waterfront. However, massive land reclamations since that time have changed everything, resulting in this Tin Hau Temple no longer being next to the sea but instead being situated in a busy urban area of the Kowloon Peninsula. Regardless, worshippers here still pay homage to Tin Hau at this temple in Ya Ma Tai.
A quick note as well that the Tin Hau temple is fairly typical of 19th-century Chinese architecture. You'll find a gray brick exterior, facade with murals above the entrance. There are stone lions mounted outside as well. Within, you find shrines, many deity figures, an open interior courtyard with hanging incense coils and rows of lanterns.
Outside of the temple you will find a memorial archway, pavilion as well as the highlight of the Tin Hau Temple - the Replica Nine Dragon Wall which is found on the east side of the temple facing Nathan Road. This is an impressive monument, one of two here in Hong Kong, along with the fellow Nine Dragon Wall replica at Wong Tai Sin Temple in Kowloon Tong. Give it a few minutes to enjoy if you plan to visit the Tin Hau Temple in Ya Ma Tai.

A real, 'lived in' temple. Tourists were well outnumbered by ordinary chinese working people from the locality offering prayers and thanks to ancestors and/or their god. Whatever your belief, or lack of, this is an experience not to be missed. Use a camera inside at your peril - these people are at worship and do NOT appreciate such intrusions. Be satisfied with the memory of peace and tranquility in bustling Kowloon.

Stumbled into this on the end of Temple Street market (although I suppose the street name should have been a clue).
After the forced pain of the market this was a veritable blessing. A big smack of authenticity is what you need every now and then in HK. Loved the atmosphere and the whole ambience. Seems a million miles away from the hustle and commercialisation outside.

Near The Jade Market and Temple Street night market in Ya Ma Tei district, you can make a visit to the Tin Hau Temple. While this is not one the best temple visit experiences in Hong Kong, it is ok for a quick stop, look and see if you are planning to be in this area for the markets and are not planning to see other temples in Hong Kong.
There is a very nice Nine Dragon Wall in the public space that faces Nathan Road that is probably the best reason to stop here. This is a replica of the important Nine Dragon Walls in Beijing. Another can be found at the Wong Tai Sin Temple, also in Kowloon.
The temple, itself, is typical of those dedicated to Tin Hau, of which there are over 70 in Hong Kong. Here you will find a fairly typical temple interior with statues, offerings and burning incense coils. It is a familiar scene to many of our other temples dedicated to Tin Hau throughout the territory. There is also a nice public space on both sides of the temple, offering plenty of shade under tall trees. There are a fair number of benches here as well to rest your feet. Unfortunately, they ask for no photography in the temple (it isn't very photogenic so not to worry).
Overall, this is just an average temple visit in Hong Kong, there are much more interesting ones to see. However the location makes it accessible and potentially worth a visit for those seeking to spend time in the nearby Jade Market and Temple Street night markets. Also, having a look at the Nine Dragon Wall is worth your time, if you decide to visit the Tin Hau Temple in Ya Ma Tai. Otherwise, you might prefer to save your temple visits to the likes of Wong Tai Sin (Wong Tai Sin - MTR), Chi Lin Monastery (Diamond Hill - MTR) and one of our very favorites, Man Fat Sze (10,000 Buddha) Monastery (Sha Tin - MTR).

From Temple Street, crossed road walked straight will passed by an red wall painted Mahjong(very attractive during night due to its shining signboard) and turned left climbed up a 3 steps staircase at the right is Tin Hau Temple. Went in have a look. There are many big round 'cylinder shape' joss stick hanging on top. Is a small temple but a few ppl worshipping. ...of this type of temple in HK, of which are legion. The architecture, decor and atmosphere of the temples were exactly as desired/ expected plus the pleasant, well-used gardens on either side are worth spending time as well. It is really well maintained and the last space on the right as you look at it has even been made into a nice little bookshop that sells some food. Given that it’s run for the benefit of those in poverty in the city too, I suggest you visit and donate what you can!

Also there have a college. 1950's before, college was a place for kowloon child to had education. But now has been closed.
