Dec 2018 • Friends
The largest library in HK with over 10 floors
Spacious and massive in heart of causeway Bay
Very relaxing place with cafes and landscapes
Many people come to surf the net and also to video chat with friends as it’s free
Even to play video games 🤪🤪

I traveled to HK explicitly to use this library for historical research, so my experience was different from that of a casual tourist visit. That said, except for two rather nasty bureaucrats I encountered at the Membership Desk, my 6 days in this library were superb - not only because the Hong Kong Studies collection is so good, not only because the library's online catalogue allowed me to prepare - thoroughly and in advance - for my research time, not only because the historical map collection is so amazing, but also because in every department I was assisted by librarians who were interested in helping me with my research and willing to find materials for me that I either needed or didn't even know were there. Thank you so much, HKPL!

As others have said, this is a gorgeous building, a place that is not only extraordinarily quiet and well-ordered, but accommodating for all types of people - young, old, children, scholars, casual readers, those who want to read the international newspapers, etc., etc. Except on Saturdays (which are crowded and busy), this is a great place of calm, beauty, and intellectual activity.

I want to add that, even though I am a foreigner, I was (mostly) welcomed with graciousness, quiet enthusiasm, and great courtesy.

This was a return trip to Hong Kong for the specific purpose of using this library's Hong Kong collection and old maps. My review from November, 2018 still stands, and I still recommend this library to anyone who (1) seriously wants to use a really good library while in Hong Kong, or (2) just wants to see what a really good, well-run, q-u-i-e-t public library is like. This is definitely not a typical "tourist attraction," but it is a beautiful building, looking out over Victoria Park and the harbor, and a good place for holding - in your own hands - the paper versions of a wide variety of international newspapers or for just reading quietly and comfortably for however long you care to.

I was really disappointed with this library that didn’t allow any talking anywhere in the library, such an outdated idea. Libraries are now busy and noisy places.
Disappointed that we weren’t allowed to take photos. I have no idea why. As a librarian I like to document libraries I visit for ideas.
Library was huge!

...definitely, it’s a superb resource, huge in size and has a lot of variety, with books available in many languages (though mostly Canto, English and Mandarin, obviously). As somewhere to visit, maybe it’s worth a look, not sure if tourists come here. The architecture is quite striking, for a library, looking more like the HQ of a cash-strapped Bond villain or one of the more successful modern sects.

This place is lovely inside...lots of floors all with something different. There are plenty of facilities and books, and there are lots of different resources, courses and lectures available. Very highly recommended.

More impressive than the sheer size of this library is that everyone inside is on his or her best behavior. Notable for a city that is so loud and vibrant. It is a true mindful oasis. The views from the upper floors are memorable. It is open until 9 on most days. This is a very well used and loved library. Hong Kong should be proud.

The library is a calm and impressive building. I enjoyed the visit as a rest from the quick and noisy streets in HK, although I didn’t look through the books carefully.

A great place to escape the noise and chaos of the Hong Kong streets. This modern, multi-level library is a wonderful way to spend a few quiet hours lost in books. There is a tremendous selection of English language books, magazines and newspapers. There are computer stations, language labs, a cafe as well as multipurpose rooms. The cavernous building has a massive atrium and walls of glass allowing for plenty of natural light to penetrate. Be sure to head up to the top floors as the city and harbor views are fabulous.

While the decor and architecture of this building is somewhat dated, this majestic building in land scarced Hong Kong, right next to Victoria Park is a quiet oasis from the maddening crowd at nearby Causeway Bay!

The library is very well-stocked and you can read many countries' newspapers on the 5th floor. It is also in the process of going digital. Given HK is the Hollywood of the East, I noticed that there are many reference books on movie production.

Most important of all, the library caters to kids and music lovers. There is a clavinova music room on the 10th floor for hire by the hour.

There is free wifi.
It helps if you can speak some basic Cantonese.

Cannot believe I only discover this gem after I relocate from Hong Kong.

Nearest MRT : Causeway Bay station Exit F
Tram stop: Shelter Road (right in front of the library)
