The area
Neighborhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.

Arcade relic from the 1970's, sort of neat to walk through for a few minutes
Sep 2021
Melbourne Plaza is a 24-storey high tower on Queen's Road Central. The majority of the upper floors are occupied by dentists, private physicians and the likes. However, the bottom 2 floors make for something of a blast from the past arcade style shopping centre. This building opened in 1970s and it appears that, while clean and rather tidy, they have done very little to update or modernise since then.

Here you will find an early 70's era arcade with tailors, clothing alteration specialists, clothing shops mixed with with a few herbal medicine, electronic and other shops. It is a bit of a time capsule like experience with clingy old escalators, old marble floors and simple lighting. The place is sort of interesting from a nostalgia perspective, potentially worth seeing if you remember these old-timey venues from the past. Otherwise, not much of value for visitors looking for modern and better shopping in the Central District.

Right in the middle of bustling and ritzy central , you have this. Nice name, but a dilapidated building with almost no stores. Probably just earning rent with the offices

Amazing how this is not put to better use

Amazing how this is not put to better use. Prime location occupied by a lousy mall.

A few eateries, some retail, some local tailors and a lot of clinics reachable via the antiquated lifts.

Quite out of place (and date) at this location in Central

Melbourne Plaza is a small shopping arcade, right in the heart of the Central District, located in an early 1970s building that is showing every bit of its age. Situated between and around modern and upscale shopping, this property is a leftover from a bygone decade that feels more and more out of place as the rest of Central continues to evolve and pass it by.

Melbourne Plaza has practical purposes, being a hot bed for local doctors who have established clinics on the upper floors. Meanwhile a two floor arcade is occupied by lower-tier, small local businesses; tailors, electronic parts, cakes and the likes. You can also find a Cafe De Coral and Oliver's Super Sandwich shop on the ground floor as well as a Fortune occupying the basement.

In the end, with very good shopping experiences all around, there is little reason for visitors to Hong Kong to step foot in Melbourne Plaza. Hopefully someday, this tired and worn property will be renovated, if not fully redeveloped.
