The area
Neighborhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.
How to get there
  • Central • 5 min walk

Regular joint of people in the know
Sep 2020
In the most unexpected time, when everybody is talking about downsizing and withdrawing from the market, a wine bar pops up in Central, in the Fringe club basement, with main entrance on Wyndham Street. It is rapidly becoming popular with people in the know.
Cleverly named as After Five @ the Fringe, the premises is a cafe in the daytime but quickly turns into a wine bar before the sunset. After Five @ the Fringe is a cozy relaxing drinking place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday is by bookings only. The venue used to be an ice vault, a heritage site. It’s a cool place to hang out in Central, with a good selection of European wines and tasty snacks. Worth stopping by and having a chat with the friendly team.

just drinks
Aug 2019
Stumbled upon Fringe Colette's on the way to Ole's Spanish restaurant so decided to come here instead.
When I arrived, the waiters obviously had the impression I was just venturing up there to have a look but they were nicer when they realized that I was genuinely going to dine there.
It seems that photos are not appreciated so I am just going to write about the drink.

Virgin apple pie:
The Virgin apple pie drink which was a nice mix of apple juice, pineapple juice garnished with cinnamon.
It was refreshing and not too sweet and tasted evidently of just juice because the cinnamon did not come through.
The lettuce had deep vein thrombosis lol!

Nice fringe cafe vault - spacious and quiet
Feb 2020
Afternoon visits there were quiet and productive given the way the seating was laid out. Reasonable food items, good coffee and good service. Great space, and nicely laid out.

Found "The Vault" cafe, downstairs from the Fringe Club, by error. Free good wifi with no time restrictions. Saturday Breakfast is great! Coffee is good and the staff are very friendly and pleasant.

Historical building and venue for the arts in Central
Mar 2019 • Couples
The Fringe Club on Lower Albert Road just east of the LKF District is a venue for contemporary art exhibitions, performances as well as a place for social gatherings. It is also an interesting historical building and Grade 1 Heritage building in HK that is worth viewing when sightseeing around this area of the city.

Originally a daily farm and then cold storage warehouse, this is is a brick and stucco building constructed around 1913 and is of peculiar appearance, set before modern skyscrapers to the south. Abandoned by the late 1970s, the HK Fringe Club acquired the building in the early 1980s and have used it ever since. Check out their website for events and performance schedule.

Pleasant vegetarian lunchtime buffet
Nov 2018 • Couples
Found about this venue from our guidebook which mentioned the lunch deal. A pleasant vegetarian buffet, not a lot of choice but the quality was good, soup, main course, salad, fruit salad, cake. The cost of the buffet 118HKD also included a iced coffee or tea. The lunch is served in the Colette's restaurant at the top of the building. A nice quiet area to go in this part of hong kong,

There is always something going on here
Feb 2018 • Solo
I was walking by here the other day and stopped in to peruse an exhibition on cats (that might sound odd as we usher in the new year of the dog, but anyway -- ) that was fun and included photography, sketches, and other mediums.
The fringe and its associated press club headquarters has its own cafe and small restaurant and the building hosts various events that will be of interest to many visitors and residents, including: lectures from the annual writers' conference, art exhibitions, and one year even the proceedings of the U.S. Democratic caucus! So it is worth keeping an eye on what is transpiring at this venue.
Happy explorations.

Nice food
Mar 2017 • Friends
A nice open dining area with a big balcony where you can choose to dine inside or outside the restaurant.
Must try dishes - their steak and their lamp chop are must try items.

Fringe Vault café
Jan 2018 • Friends
Had coffee and drinks with a friend at the Fringe Vault Café. It is one of the venues of the Fringe Club, which is situated on Lower Albert Road in Victorian Heritage building next to the Foreign Correspondentr's Club (FCC). Lovely and quiet place for a quiet conversation, for catching up with friends and/or a snack..... very reasonable prices.

Colette's at the Fringe Club
Apr 2017 • Friends
Week day veggie lunch is a good deal here. HK$118 for a veggie buffet. Choices are few, but tasty: salad, soup, pasta, roasted veggies, cheese, bread and fruit.
Drinks you can order behind the bar. We just had iced tea. Not sure if it includes alcohol.
There is a small terrace which was shaded. Lovely!
