The area
Neighborhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.
How to get there
  • Admiralty • 5 min walk
  • Central • 6 min walk

Chris Rowthorn Tours Hong Kong: Best of many private walking tours we have ever done!
Feb 2019 • Couples
My husband and I spent two days with Canny and she was an incredible guide. She is a long time resident of Hong Kong and experienced tour guide and she knows deeper stories and has better insights than any guide we have ever had. She was flexible about customizing things that we wanted to see that are not on the "usual" list (for example: the 10,000 Buddha Monastery) and when we said we wanted to experience Hong Kong like a local, she truly understood what we meant. We walked, took the train, rode the tram, experienced a ferry ride, and saw everything we wanted to see in Hong Kong. She also showed us where to find some other things we wanted to do on our own. We can't say enough good things about the whole experience with Canny and also with our booking with Chris. Highly, highly recommend Chris Rowthorn Tours Hong Kong and our tour guide Canny.

Great instant Hong Kong
Oct 2018 • Family
My wife and I had our nine year old grandson with us in Asia and managed a quick two days in Hong Kong. I booked the six hour walking tour hoping that he would get some idea of the place. I was somewhat anxious about that much walking for a little boy. Conny Lau took us on a ferry, subway, bus, streetcar, cable car, and walking. It was a perfect day because of her great knowledge, wonderful companionship, thoughtfulness, and familiarity with both her city, and our needs. This was everything we had wished for and more.

Great Walking Tour
Feb 2017 • Friends
Our group of 6 coming off a cruise ship for the day were met by our ever efficient and lovely guide, Canny, who whisked us off on a fantastic tour of Victoria Island. We started with a taxi ride to the Star Ferry, on which Canny spent the short ride pointing out the various iconic buildings on the skyline with a bit of history. We walked to the tram to go up to Victoria peak, but found it very crowded, so Canny took us on a tour of the park to start with. Enchanting bird aviary and lovely park. Onwards to the Shangri-La where they arranged for taxis for us to go to the top of the peak. After being wowed by the views, we took the tram down. Canny gave us each transport cards (like the Oyster Cards in London) so that we didn't need to fish for change each time. We then went to a Chinese temple celebrating Chinese new year, and took a double decker bus to the old part of Hong Kong. We walked through the wholesale dried fish markets and herb markets before going to the Lin Heung Kui restaurant for lunch. We never would have found it on our own, up a rickety set of stairs to a real Hong Kong dim sum restaurant, where we had a fabulous lunch. We are from Vancouver, so we know dim sum. This was the real thing and we were the only Caucasians there. After some more walking through the densely packed old quarter, we were getting tired, so Canny took us up the longest outdoor escalator in the world to SoHo, and then took the MRT back to a shopping center near the cruise ship terminal where we were able to get a taxi to our cruise ship (in plenty of time BTW). This tour is highly recommended. We saw much more than the people who took the ship's tour.

Thank you very much for the extremely generous review of your tour with Canny! I'm delighted that you enjoyed the tour and I know that Canny feels the same way. I appreciate you mentioning so many details of the tour, form how Canny had prepared transport cards, to the way Canny took you to a "locals only" restaurant, to the way Canny responded to the group's energy levels. The way you describe your tour is exactly what we are aiming to achieve with our tours. I'm glad that our approach worked for you. I hope that we have the honor of serving you again sometime in Hong Kong. Thanks again!

We had a great guide in Canny she didn't believe in wasting time in queues and was passionate for us to see everything. From meeting and using the ferry to looking around the business Andrea first we moved on to the train service to the Peak, although having pre booked there was still a small queue so she took us into the Hong Kong Park heat door. This was fabulous as we were able to visit the aviary which I'm sure most visitors to the city don't get to do. Then on to a taxi to the Peak, a ride down on the train, a visit to the old Hong Kong streets and a real Chinese restaurant the locals use. So many sights, sounds and smells on this walking tour we were exhausted after 6 hours and she returned us by subway to the ship.
Fabulous lady, loads of information when we got back to our cruise we realised we had seen much more than everyone else!

Tour with a Heart
May 2016 • Couples
My husband and I had only one full day to see the sights in Hong Kong, and I am so glad we booked our city tour through Chris Rowthorn Tours. Promptly at 9:00 AM, we found our guide, Ms. Canny Lau, waiting for us in our hotel lobby in the New Territories. There she gave us a brief overview of where she planned to take us during our six-hour walking tour and asked us if we had any other places we wanted to visit or things we wanted to do.

Accompanied by a young lady we had become friends with during our travels in China over the previous two weeks with Sinorama Tours, the four of us set off for the center of the Hong Kong's financial district via the clean and efficient metro system. A life-long resident of Hong Kong, Canny was a wonderful guide and lovely person in her own right. She paced the tour to our needs and was flexible enough to allow us to go "off the itinerary" when we saw a place we wanted to investigate or a store where we wanted to shop. All the while she provided us with so much interesting information about the history, people, and culture of Hong Kong while patiently answering our many questions. To make things even easier for us, she provided each of us with a prepaid Octopus metro card that we could use on any public transportation and she paid for our admissions and lunch. She noted all expenses in a little notebook she carried and added them to the tour fee, which the three of us divided equally and paid at tour's end.

Under Canny's tutelage, we felt we experienced a wonderful sampling of this amazing city that one could truly investigate for days on end. After admiring the beautiful skyscrapers that abound here, we visited the historic Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist, sneaking in between Sunday services for a look. BTW, the church maintains a very nice gift shop across its courtyard. Then it was on to Victoria Peak, where Canny saved us so much time by suggesting we take a taxi up to avoid the long lines waiting for the Peak Tram. Instead of going to the crowded area where the tram drops off its riders, she had the taxi drop us off at the top of the three-story shopping center above the tram stop. There we had the center's observation area almost to ourselves. Despite the mists, we had a wonderful view of the city and harbor below. Afterwards, we walked through the center, stopping at a bakery to sample one of Hong Kong's famous custard tarts. Delicious!

After taking the very steep tram back down the peak (and there was no line to get on), we strolled through Hong Kong Park, where we enjoyed its amazing walk-through aviary and the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware. We then walked along the famous Queen's Road and Hollywood Road, explored Soho, and rode the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator, the longest escalator in the world.

After a yummy lunch of fried rice, fried noodles, and milk tea at a local coffee shop, Canny took us to my favorite stop--PMQ. This former married policeman's quarters has been turned into a nonprofit gallery where Hong Kong's up-and-coming student artists and entrepreneurs can display and sell their wares. If you are tired of the same old cheesy souvenir products and want to find unique, beautiful, and well-priced gifts for yourself and others, this is definitely the place. I could have spent the entire day there exploring the many shops.

We finished off our day visiting Man Mo Temple and walking the street of herbalists, where we saw products the locals use daily in their lives but that we Americans found a bit disconcerting! Finally, we rode a skinny double-decker tram back to the Central metro station, and Canny accompanied us back to our hotel, where we settled our account with her. We actually went almost two hours over our scheduled tour time, but Canny refused to charge us extra. What a wonderful person!

I just cannot say enough about the fantastic day Canny provided for us, and I would highly recommend that you consider booking one of the many tours offered through Chris Rowthorn if you ever visit Hong Kong.

Another great walking tour from Chris
Sep 2015
Two years ago we took 3 walking tours in Kyoto with Chris' guides and enjoyed them immensely. With a week in Hong Kong we took 3 more tours: the Kowloon and Island tours, and a full day trip to Macau. Although the weather was hot and humid, we enjoyed these tours also and feel they allow a great street level experience, seeing not only the well known highlights, but access to lesser known sights. They allow great time management, seeing more than we would be able to manage ourselves in the same time frame. Shermone, our guide for all 3 tours, was friendly and efficient and took great care to ensure that our lunch stops had vegetarian options for one of us. She also made sure that we had several transport options in the humidity, which was much appreciated. Thoroughly recommended.

My guide was fantastic - adapted the speed and stops to my interest. She was very generous in answering my questions about culture, religion, history, etc. She made sure that my experience in Hong Kong covered all the highlights. I also used this service in Kyoto, and had an equally positive experience.

Great personalized walking tours
May 2014 • Family
We booked two different days of walking tours through Chris Rowthorn Tours -- one day of Central Hong Kong and one day in Kowloon. It was a full day of walking, but our guide, Canny, was great at keeping our family group moving and engaged. She really listened to us about what we were interested in seeing, but also showed us things we didn't know about. And she took us to great places to eat, and showed us how to use the Octopus cards on the subway!

We had two great days, and learned a lot about Hong Kong.

Superb walking tour of Hong Kong
Mar 2013 • Couples
On my recent trip to Hong Kong, I decided that a private full day tour with a tour guide may be the best way to see a lot of Hong Kong in a short amount of time. I booked with Chris Rowthorn tours, who were very quick with email contact. We were very lucky to spend our day with Shermone, who was absolutely superb.

This was an intense walking tour of Hong Kong. We started walking down Nathan Road towards the famous Hong Kong harbourfront, where we learned about the Clock Tower and Shermone pointed out some of the most famous buildings along the harbourfront. We took the Star Ferry to Central where we saw Hong Kong park, the wet markets, Man Mo Temple, Cat Street Market. Shermone shared with us the historical information regarding Hong Kong and answered all of our many, many questions about life in Hong Kong today including questions about wedding traditions, real estate, and food. She was very accommodating and when we mentioned that we would like to try milk tea, she made sure to find us one of the best places in the city for milk tea and pineapple buns (which actually have no pineapple at all!).

We headed back to Kowloon where we walked through the Flower Markets, the Bird Market and the Goldfish Market. We also did a quick walk through the Ladies Market. We stopped for a great lunch as well at a place she recommended. All in all, it was an excellent day. We saw so much and really grasped the history of Hong Kong, the nuances of the different neighbourhoods, and the daily life of the average Hong Kong citizen. Shermone was a wonderful guide with genuine warmth and grace. We felt like we spent the day exploring Hong Kong with a friend. Highly recommended.
