The market time forgot.
Dec 2020 • Solo
There are two main reasons to visit this still bustling market. Firstly, its historical significance: as far as I understand it, there used to be loads of markets like this in the central areas of the city (like in many other Asian cities and in other parts of HK) but they were cleared for high-rise so coming here feels a lot like stepping back in time. Much of it off the main thoroughfare now seems abandoned but that only adds to the atmosphere. Secondly, the low prices for fruit: don’t bother with the supermarkets when you can save lots by shopping here and at other (purpose built ‘wet’) markets.

Historic fruit market in Yau Ma Tei
Apr 2020
The Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market is a Grade II historic building (designated in 2009) that is spread out over several blocks along Reclamation Street and Waterloo Road in Yau Ma Tei. The market was founded in 1913 as a food market. However, over time vegetable and seafood traders have long moved out, making this almost exclusively a fruit market at this time.

You can walk along the market small shops and stalls and see a nice variety of regional fruit as well as those grown in countries further afield. The market can be rather busy at times but makes for attractive viewing and nice picture taking for those interested in seeing a local food market here in Hong Kong. The market is open from 6am to 8pm daily.

A gem of Hong Kong
Jun 2019 • Friends
If you come to Hong Kong, I would definitely recommend you to take a break in Ya Ma Tei Fruits Market. It is a historical site for fruit wholesale in the past till now. Located in the crowded area of Kowloon where Metro was just at her threshold, a place not to be missed. Since the air cargo business in HK ranked world no.1 and Hong Kong got her advantage for those fruits all over the world to be imported within the same day as in the country of origin. That said, all kinds of fresh fruits would be present here. Imagine you are traveling hong Kong and tasting all the seasonal fruits over the world within this market, with the lovely outlook and free tasting, it us the place for all the fruit lovers. The wonder is, you can now purchase just small amounts instead of the entire boxes, feel the atmosphere and witness the world of fresh fruit at very low prices.

A great variety of fruits from all over
Jun 2019
The stalls here sell fruits from all over. I can't say they are the cheapest (although generally cheaper than SG) but they are definitely fresh and good.

When in the area . . .

. . . be sure to take a stroll through this interesting market where vendors offer a wide variety of unusual fruits. Show your sense of adventure and try one or two which are not readily available at your local grocer.

Historic Fruit Wholesale market in Ya Ma Tai
Feb 2019 • Solo
An interesting place to pass by in the Ya Ma Tai district of Kowloon is the historic Fruit Market located at Waterloo and Reclamation Street. This is a 100 year old wholesale marketplace found within Grade II historical building.

During the day, you can walk through the market and see numerous fruit and vegetables available directly to the public. However, the real action here is in the middle of the night, when tens of thousands of large boxes of produce are moved in and out of the market, loaded into awaiting lorries for distribution throughout Hong Kong. This is when the market is at its busiest, while the rest of us are sleeping.

By morning, the roads around the marketplace are cleared by the fruit vendors to avoid disrupting local road traffic. Things calm down at the Ya Ma Tai Fruit Market then making it more accessible for tourists to have a look-see.

The Ya Ma Tei Fruit Market is around 5 minute walk to the Ya Ma Tei MTR Station Exit B2. It can be an interesting place to stop by if you are sightseeing in the area. Other nearby attractions include the Jade Market and Tin Hau Temple.

NOT JUST FRUITS
Dec 2018 • Couples
I love ALL street markets, especially in Asia. This is in the Jordan Street neighborhood and a visit to it can be combined with visits to several interesting places in the area. Come in, smell the fruits, the aromas of the street and enjoy it I do. And have lunch at one of the may street stalls (some with tables and chairs)

This is well written up in the Tourist burbs but when we went it was just a lane of stallholders trying to sell an admitted wide range of fruit at sky high prices, two and a half to three times more expensive than the UK and certainly more expensive than local markets elsewhere in HK. If you have time to spare, we were in HK for nearly three weeks, combine it with something else: but if you are there for but a day or so, don't bother as there is a plethora of more interesting things to do.

Come for very fresh fruits
Nov 2018 • Solo
If you are in the Mongkok or Yau Ma Tei areas, please drop by this fruit market and join the crowd in buying fresh fruits this side of the island. I got a bag of fresh plums for HKD20, two giant custard apples for HKD80, four big pears for HKD40 and a bag of green grapes for HKD30. That cannot be beat!
The market is walking distance from Mongkok MTR - along Reclamation St.
