Jamie Lloyd, J3Private Tours Hong-Kong was an excellent guide for us. We were a group of 4 and on a limited time schedule. Jamie was prompt and honored our time constraints but was able to show us many of the high lights and interesting things of HK. He was organized and planned. He made it easy for us to travel about the City by walking, by sub way and on ferry. 5 stars for Jamie!

I see that Jamie is ranked #3 in tours. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job than he did. We went on two tours with him and they were both fantastic. We rode four different modes of transportation which was great. And his knowledge of the area is endless. We highly recommend him to anyone who wants to get a complete tour of this area. He meets you at your hotel and makes sure you get back there. We did five hour tours and that's what we recommend.

Contacted Jamie via his J3 Tours website to arrange for a two custom photography tour while in Hong Kong. I was traveling back from 14 day photography trip throughout mainland China and had a laundry list of areas I wanted to visit in Hong Kong. Jamie was extremely helpful in coordinating all logistics for my two full days we traveled together.

I was not after typical tourist shots and wanted to hit out of the way markets, villages and Hong Kong older lifestyle locations. He tweaked my photo 'wish list' to cut out a couple unrealistic items (based on time) and added in some real nuggets I had not thought of. I was there during a very hot and humid period and Jamie was a trooper hanging in with me the whole time as we made our way in and around Hong Kong, hiked up to the big Buddha, and through wet (fish) market areas.

There is no way I would have been able to see and photograph half the locations I did without his in depth knowledge of Hong Kong and neighboring islands. His knowledge of the buses, ferries and 'short cuts' allowed us to travel very efficiently and not waste time waiting around for transportation as well as sequence shoot locations to maximize time with minimal crowds.

Jamie also provided great recommendations and time saving suggestions for my free time after our two day tour ended allowing me to easily explore other Hong Kong areas on my own including 'his spot' for shooting Victory Harbor at night.

If you want the most out of your time in Hong Kong and a true custom guide, J3 Tours is the way to go. I highly recommend Jamie for other professional photographers and tourist alike. Don't bother with the canned tours, book Jamie, you won't be disappointed.

Hi Cold Corona I have a keen interest in photography and I am always thrilled when I get to show professional photographers around Hong Kong, I can learn from the masters!! We covered a lot of ground over the 2 days we spent together, testament to Hong Kong fantastic public transport. I really appreciate the great review Thanks Jamie

This review is being resubmtted after the tour guide lodged a complaint with tripadvisor. The operator indicated that my review was number 444, which in Chinese mythology signified death, death, death. I found this interesting as during the tour he constantly pointed out instances of chinese mythology and superstition, which he duly mocked and belittled. I found this to be a blatant insult of the local people, and significantly detracted from his service.

Based on reviews, decided to book a couple of tours. Communication at booking is friendly and efficient. On meeting our tour guide you quickly note that he has the gift of the gab. This is important to note as the services provided by this operator are almost all totally dependent of his ability to communicate. Play along and he'll dazzle you with nonsensical facts such as the fact that Hong Kong has 43,000 rubbish bins, there is a ministry for slopes, and the avg apartment is 33sq metres. Hhhmmm fascinating! All of the sights we visited would have been just as easily accessible with a guide book. However, his tour did provide an insight into the bitterness that the the local British have as a result of the handover back to China. On a number of ocassions he displayed a blatant resentment that any local could exercise any authority over him. This detracted significantly from the quality of his service as we found it most embarrasing and disrespecful. On a lighter note, I must say that his sense of dress is quite fetching. This comment is warranted as he made similar sarcastic observations of my dress. Totally rude and disrespectful and nothing to do with providing a tour! The tour was worth it in the end, just to see a side of conflicting cultures and confirm the true feelings of those who have resented the hand over of Hong Kong back to China. By the way, he did volunteer that he owned 43 rolexes! My, how fascinating, though not much relevance to gaining an understanding of Hong Kong and its culture. I'm sure people will still be taken by the inane facts and figures! By the way we rescheduled one of the tours. This was done a day in advance, not minutes before the tour as he suggested. The tour guide actually added that the change in time suited him better. Also the cost of the tours is far in excess of what the service that is provided, as noted in other reviews.

Finally, I'd like to point out that my original review, for the short time that it appeared on tripadvisor, received 7 helpful votes. This is worth noting as it appears other tripadvisor users found it relevant to their trip planning and research.

Sir, The reviewer has resubmitted his review minus the personal insults coloured by his obvious dislike of English people I am resubmitting my original management response, I have nothing further to add despite the additional untrue accusations made as a response to my getting his original review removed. Gosh you have certainly put me in my place. At the conclusion of our second tour you looked me in the eye, shook my hand and mentioned what a marvellous time you and your wife had had. Imagine my surprise at being quadrupled nelsoned (look it up) and it is entirely fitting that I get my first very negative view after 4 years on review number 444 which here translates to death, death, death! I have been in two minds as to whether to respond but sir, you have crossed the line and many of your comments are factually incorrect and it is just not right that you call me a typical pomy (pommie) git, this implies that you have a deep seated dislike for English people. It should also be mentioned that you wrote 3 reviews based on your trip to Hong Kong and all of them were 1 star negative reviews, I am thinking that your horrible experience at a top bar / restaurant where you picked up food poisoning had ruined your holiday. It should be mentioned that you cancelled one of our tours at the very last minute (when I was a few minutes away from the Hotel) due to this incident. I was happy to reschedule our tour but only after another client who had made a last minute booking had graciously agreed to move their tour to another day. It should also be noted that a very negative review can have a major impact on ranking and therefore your business and I will not apologise for my tours given that you are so prejudiced, I need to set the record straight so future clients can see both sides to the story and my only recourse is a management response. Two current hot political issues in Hong Kong are recycling (43,000 trash cans) and public housing (33sqm apartments), my facts from part of critical information needed to understand the context of these critical issues... and yes, our Government has a department that fixes dangerous slopes to prevent landslides, a policy that has saved many lives over the years. You allude to the fact that I resent the handing over of Hong Kong to China and that I am bitter, this is simply nonsense and again you seem to be making these assumptions on the fact that I am a typical pomy (pommie) git and a wannabe upper class toff which could not be further from the truth. My sense of dress quite fetching? For 4 years I have worn on a daily basis, a pair of jeans, a navy or black polo shirt and a pair of comfortable walking shoes.... oh and again you misrepresent your “facts” I did not say I owned 43 Rolex watches, what I said was I have over the past 38 years owned 43 pre owned Rolexes which I buy / sell / trade but have not had one for over 5 years. Calling me a wannabe upper class toff is simply ludicrous I am a proud Yorkshireman born in Middlesbrough with a very working class background who has all of his adult life lived in working class / lower middle class districts in Hong Kong. .. And to all my clients, past, present and future - I work extremely hard to provide the best possible tour within the time frame allotted and please read my other reviews and factor in that this client seems to be somewhat prejudicial towards English people in general. Thank you

Overpriced and over-promised. After reading all the positive reviews I signed up, thankful Jamie could fit me in to his busy schedule. However, after the tour was complete I felt I had only seen locations and heard information I could have obtained from any basic guidebook. I was hoping to visit a Hong Kong I couldn't find in a guidebook, but did not, we even ate at the most popular Dim Sum chain restaurant in the city! Save your $3000 HK and spend a few dollars on a city map and see the sights on your own. Huge disappointment :-(

I provide a premium service and I have never, ever felt that a client has been less than happy with the tours I provide and it has come of somewhat as a shock to read these comments by "Tiasquam" . As there is no clue as to the clients identity (the profile of this person has no information at all) I cannot even begin to figure out who this client was and I am wondering if this is a malicious review. I welcome all feedback in an effort to improve but this is a real headscratcher as all the information on the feedback could have been gotten from other reviews and my website (which also includes a price list). If this review is genuine then all I can really say is that my job is simply to give clients a snapshot of Hong Kong over a period of 5 - 10 hours. The reviews I have gotten speak for themselves, no 2 tours are ever the same and everywhere we go is "genuine" Hong Kong and you certainly cannot get my 36 years of living in Hong Kong experience in a guidebook! I am very sorry that this person has a less than happy experience but as I cannot verify the clients identity I cannot really comment in more detail Thank you

where should i start? I took this tour way back and it seems like a dream come true right at the start. during booking, jamie got back to me very quickly and was very prompt in meeting me and my partner at our hotel. he was very pleasant and friendly. the reviews seem to suggest that we will all have a great time with him.

True, we saved a lot of time (as we may take more time figuring how to go around), but the tour seems to be too expensive for the value he provides. As the tour goes, i started wondering if the tour was worth the money as the attractions he showed me could have been easily visited by ourselves and i wonder if his interpretation as well as rude pokes at the locals' dressing was worth couple of hundreds (in usd). I understand it may be his style of humour but I would have expect a greater appreciation and acceptance of the locals since he has been in hk for many years and he claims to like it.

What tipped us over was that the food selection was lousy, we were brought to a old chinese dingy restauant in Kowloon at our request for "local food". But it turned out to be orders of westernized chinese food like "sweet and sour pork", the likes. Being great foodies and extremely into chinese cuisine, it was miserable for us as the cooking was clearly catered to the western palate and was hardly authenic cantonese cuisine. I wish he can listen to all these feedback and more effort can be put into selection of food .it seems to be a recurring complain if you see read his reviews. What he thinks is hk food may not be hk. so if you are into food, you may want to skip his tours. (By the way, he recommends Din Tai Fung, but it is a taiwanese place, not hk! we had awesome soup dumplings from the original Din Tai Fung when we visited Taiwan previously. )

If you want to claim yourself to be a local guide for 30+ years, you got to be recommending the hk stuff, isnt it?

Hi JH989 I would be very grateful if you could contact me directly (you will have my email address) as there are some inconsistencies with your review. I keep extensive notes of every tour and quite simply, you claimed to have done a tour with me in March 2013 and yet in March 2013 I went to this restaurant twice with parties of 4 , I did not visit this place with 2 people from London. However I am extremely grateful for your comments as it allows me to address the subject of food, I have previously acknowledged that I am NOT a foodie, so much so that I make a specific reference to this on my website and in my emails to clients. I have eaten in over 900 chinese restaurants in my time in Hong Kong but this does not make me a foodie! there are specific companies in Hong Kong that offer food tours who are absolutely excellent and worth booking. In addition when clients contact me and indicate that food should be a major part of the tour then I will always advise them to book someone else. Now in my defense so to speak, the restaurant that you mention is actually quite famous in Hong Kong despite it's horrible exterior / interior and I have eaten there for 28 years, it is not the sort of a place a tourist would visit but it is an authentic experience! in any event food is such a subjective subject which is why I do NOT do food based tours, I have had just a couple of comments about food (in a negative way) which hardly seems to indicate that it is a recurring problem! given then number of tours I do. I am very sorry that the food experience seems to have spoilt your overall enjoyment of the tour and I would still like you to contact me directly. Again, I am very grateful for your comments, the only way I can improve is to act on these issues and once again make it absolutely clear that I DO NOT do food tours! Thank you Jamie

This tour was interesting from someone with an outsider's view of Hong Kong. I would probably have preferred an insider's view. Thought this was expensive for one person and did not find the places visited that fascinating. (I was not really given a choice of where to go). That said the guide is personable and it does get you oriented.

Hi SGGNZ Thank you for the review, I appreciate the feedback As I understand it, it would appear that as a non Chinese person I am not an "insider" but an outsider in Hong Kong, I am a bit bemused by this purely on the basis that I have lived in Hong Kong for 37 years, 22 years under British rule, 15 years under Chinese rule, my wife was born and raised in Hong Kong and is fluent in Cantonese and we have raised a family here, I would think that 37 years in Hong Kong gives me a somewhat interesting and perhaps a unique perspective of Hong Kong! In our emails you made it crystal clear that you where more than happy for me to leave the itinerary to me and when we met I asked you if there was anything at all you wanted to do and as we only had 5 hours together you again re-iterated that you were happy to leave everything to me! I always and I mean always make sure that a client can factor in any special request and as many clients would confirm I have been known to change itineraries at the drop off a hat when something comes up in conversation, I am extremely flexible. I am sorry that my tour fell below your expectations and I appreciate your feedback thanks Jamie

Wanted to rate Jame’s tour as Good, but Trip advisor only has Average and Very Good ratings. Took a 5-hour night tour for two (as he was fully booked in the day). A friendly and helpful guide; went the extra mile to find out and enquire about some noodles that I was looking for (which was only available in Macau).

Although time was “tight”, we covered quite a number of sites, some of which I would have never gone to if I was to go with the ‘generic tour groups’ (like Chungking Mansion), and also walking down a “dark dangerous lane”. We also had the experience their public transports – namely the MTR, Ferry & Public Bus.

All in all, Jamie’s very knowledgeable about the city, and had no problems in answering all of our questions; although some were not answered in depth (like about the Fengshui hole at the building at Repulse Bay… yes, the hole is for Fengshui for the people but… … [got this from another site: “the local residents believe a dragon lives on the mountain behind the apartment block. In China, dragons are a good thing, a protective force, good karma, whatever you like. They need to be protected and aided. The residents were worried that the proximity of the fire-breathing dragon would pose a fire risk. They didn't want the dragon going through their building on its way down the mountain and inadvertantly setting the place on fire. So they had the developer allow for a big hole to be left in the building, one which the dragon could pass through.”]

Also, some of the places where we “landed”/ended up in, we weren’t told where we were (like we had to ask where were when we got off the ferry, after walking some distance (when we asked, we were then told we were at Tsim Sha Tsui; I believed we also passed by the Clock Tower, but weren’t introduced about it).

Hi Janebond07 Thank you so much for your positive comments and critiques, one of the most wonderful things about what I do is the chance to meet so many people from around the world and every tour is a learning experience for me as well. As my first female clients from Singapore, it was quite the experience for me as well and I appreciate all your comments . I have added your comments about the Repulse Bay building with the hole to my knowledge base, I have to say that the explanation is quite different from that I have gathered over the years from local Chinese residents! it seems that there are many different views locally on what the hole represents but I have noted and stored it! Ladies, I appreciated very much the chance to do a night tour with you, I learnt a lot as well and thanks again for your comments. duly noted! Jamie

My husband and I liked the tour and can recommend Jamie as a tour guide if you're looking for a Hong Kong Tour - you get much more than you would from a general bus tour, of course. His knowledge is very solid, especially on history and hard facts.

We expected a bit more though, especially more 'insider information': the stories behind the scenes, discoveries, anecdotes when you wander around the city - in short, the things I won't read in a guide book. We also felt we constantly had to ask questions, to get information.

I'd say, take this tour if you want to know the facts, like the history, and if you are looking for general information, not so much if you like stories about people, the city and it's neighborhoods, the food and lifestyle etc.

I am a great believer in Tripadvisor and if I get a negative review then I take it on the chin, learn a lesson and move on, but I am troubled by this review., the comments made go right to the heart of my modus operandi so if a client is not happy then I want to know about it! With this review I simply cannot match up the comments / facts to a client, I always take extensive notes of each and every tour and can easily cross reference information and on this one I have hit a brick wall, I have contacted the “client” through Tripadvisor and asked her to give her real name and / or the date of the tour and no response as yet which is telling. (I have never had a client named Heidi from New York and yes I know this maybe a pseudonym but I have had only 3 tours with couples from New York and the review does not match my notes in any shape or form) Although the review is not a bad review by any stretch it is simply not credible, the comment about the tours I offer “not so much if you like stories about people, the city and it's neighborhoods, the food and lifestyle etc. “ is just plain wrong. I am in my 37th year of living in Hong Kong and right from the very first tour I have shared everything about my experience of living in Hong Kong with my clients and you will notice this by reading the other reviews! I cannot think of one instance where I have not shared my stories and life experiences. In addition I write a daily blog on my website and have written almost 800 articles about Hong Kong so why wouldn’t I tell stories and share my experiences? I would like to think that clients want to engage my services because I have lived in Hong Kong for such a long time and have a rather interesting perspective on the place! I am a little frustrated that my only recourse is to write a management response to this review but unless the “client” can verify her identity and confirm the date of the tour there is not much else I can do. I am very proud of what I do, I love Hong Kong and it is simply my job to share what I know about this great city with each and every client. Thanks Jamie

I enjoyed the tour with Jamie, but felt that it was a bit expensive.
Hong Kong's transportation is really fantastic and with a bit of research one can travel to most of the sites.
But for the nervous traveller, I will recommend Jamie.

Hi Portertjies Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. Getting a slightly negative review is always a difficult thing to come to terms with as I pretty much devote my life to what I do (just ask the wife and kids!) and making sure that I give my clients the best possible experience. Feedback is vital as one learns and then improves but your critique has me a bit bemused ... considering how many times you told me you really enjoyed yourself.. I think (looking back at my notes) that the issue stemmed from the fact that you turned up 45 minutes late, so we lost 45 minutes from a 4 hour tour. As I had another tour to do I was not able to extend our time together. Given the shortened tour I did my best to show you as much as possible within the time frame of 3 hours and 15 minutes. I think losing this time contributed to your comments as did the fact that you underpaid me 10% of my fee, you asked me to return to the Hotel later that night, which I did and the reaction I got gave me the impression that you had expected me to swallow the loss of income. I absolutely agree that that we have the best public transport in the world and I should point out that I gave you detailed instructions and suggestions (with images) for 12 other places you could visit and I did this before our tour as you had a free day prior to our tour, so all the research was actually handed to you on a plate so to speak! If you want to see what value I bring to my private tours then simply read my hundreds of reviews, guidebooks cannot and do not provide any of the info I provide on tour particularly on issues covering current affairs, history, political considerations or what it is like for an "expat" living in and raising a family here over almost 40 years. None of this detracts from the fact that I was very happy to meet you and show you around this great city and like I said, you gave the impression that everything was just fine...and I certainly appreciate the positive comments you made about me. I am so sorry the tour did not live up to your expectations but I am pretty sure you would have given me a glowing review had we had that extra 45 minutes and we had covered the attractions that I had to cut out. Thanks again for taking the time to do the review, it has given me food for thought. Jamie
