The area
Neighborhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.
How to get there

Old Govenors residence

Old colonial residence. Very hard to get a good view of it so I would just suggest walking past as part of a tour of the area.

Difficult to get a good view of
Mar 2018 • Couples
This building is not usually open to the public and it is well protected by security, so difficult to get much of a view of.
We walked around the surrounding wall on our way from the Botanical Gardens to the Star Ferry pier.

More than a century Building
Mar 2018 • Family
It's directly facing the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens. So while you are visiting the Gardens, can also walk around its exterior wall.

The Government House is the official residence of the HK Chief Executive and it was completed in 1855.

The exterior of the Government House is entirely stucco, full of expressionism and art deco style. The design of the central tower and roof is influenced by Japanese architectural style. Government House blends different architectural styles with unique and historical significance, witnessing Hong Kong's important historical periods of more than a hundred years.

Residence and history
Dec 2015
The Government House in the Mid-Levels was the official residence to 25 out of 28 British governors. Today it is the official residence to the Chief Executive (head of government) of Hong Kong.
The entire complex is closed to the public and can only be partly visited on Open Days which normally take place once a year on a weekend. Access then is not just for locals but also for tourists. However, be aware to queue for hours if you plan to visit.
It is possible to walk to the main gate of Government House for taking photos. Before taking photos you should ask the police officer guarding the main gate for permission.

Government House - Very rarely open for visitors
Nov 2013 • Couples
The Government House is a 1850s era colonial building which currently serves as the official residence of the Hong Kong Chief Executive. It is found at Castle Hill in the Central District but is unfortunately not open to the public and can only be viewed through the gates at a distance, from Upper Albert Road.

Fortunately but rarely, they do have Open Days where visitors are allowed to walk the grounds, see the surrounding garden as well as Government House. Unfortunately, the Open Days are not on a set schedule and are treated as special occasions only. The dates have usually been announced around a week in advance.

Considering the very little notice of future Open Days, its impossible to plan for a visit to the Government House. You have to be lucky to be in Hong Kong when an Open Day is to occur, if this is something that interests you.

Only open to the public once a year
Mar 2013
Government house is nice to look at if your walking past or in the area, but you can't really get a good look from the road. It is only open to the public once a year, usually a Sunday in March or April, the information is posted here:
http://www.ceo.gov.hk/gh/eng/openday.htm
But usually information is only available less than a week before the open day, so check nearer the time! This seems to be a deliberate attempt to keep numbers down. The open day is well worth a visit if your in town at the time, you see the gardens and the house, you'll also see hords of Chinese tourists pushing and shoving for the best spot to take photos of anything and everything.
