The Tolo Harbour is a large and attractive coastal area with seaside communities as well as long stretches of seaside promenades, city parks and other leisure areas. Notable areas along the harbour include Plover Cove, Tai Po, CUHK University, Science Park and Ma On Shan.
Biking and jogging are popular activities around Tolo Harbour and there are plenty of kilometres of seaside track to enjoy these recreational activities. You can also rent boats and kayaks to enjoy time on the water. Just north of the main pebble beach at Ma On Shan there is the HappySky Water Sports Centre. They hire out good quality, safe, topside kayaks.
A fun half day activity in Tolo Harbour is to kayak out to some of the small, protected islands in Tolo Harbour like Centre Island and the Ma Shi Chau Special Zone, where you can enjoy seeing rare geological rock structures that date all the way back to the Permian period. There is a nature trail at Ma Shi Chau if you want to walk the grounds. Alternatively just paddle around slowly and enjoy the geological highlights along the way.
Quite a few other ways to enjoy time outside around Tolo Harbour including the Plover Cove and Reservoir area east of Tai Po, the Egret Nature area just past Science Park and back up the Shing Mun River (canal) towards Sha Tin as well.

While Victoria Harbour is about Hong Kong's urban development, Tolo Harbour is the green lung of the city. It is one of the very few places to enjoy outdoor activities without seeing skyscrapers. A stroll or leisure cycling during weekends is often more enjoyable without the crowd. The waterfront view is serene and picturesque.

Its a park with cycling and walking tracks. One side of it is the motorway and the other side is Tolo Harbour. The tract provides toilets, resting area with tables and chairs.

We hired bikes on the river front in Shatin near Shatin park. There are dedicated cycle paths so that you can ride safely along the Shing Mun River and around Tolo Harbour and past the university. It is such a fun ride and not difficult. We advise cycling all around the harbour to Tai Mei Tuk where you can have views over Plover Cove and enjoy some nice food too. You can cycle one way and drop your bikes off at Tai Mei Tuk just let the bike shop know you want this when you hire. It is slightly more expensive.
The ride around the harbour is spectacular and I never get bored. There is a waterfront park where you can enjoy the views and there are lots of loo and refreshment stops.

I'd seen the cycle tracks near my hotel, and read reviews here that it's nice to cycle Tolo Harbour. The reviews were definitely right! I cycled from Sha Tin, went to Tai Po water park, then on to the dam.
In Sha Tin I'd seen lots of green bikes, so I took a closer look and found they belong to a company called Gobee.bike. You download an app, find a nearby green bike, scan it's code from your phone, pay deposit using Apple Pay or similar, then the bike magically unlocks itself! The beauty of these bikes is they only cost HKD5 per half hour and you drop them wherever you like!
I got tired going back to Sha Tin, so I just locked it up and got the bus back to the hotel again!
The views along the cycle path are really nice, and midweek fairly quiet. Judging by the number of cycle hire places enroute, and from what I've heard, weekends can be very busy. There's plenty of places to get drinks, snacks, and more along the way.

Tolo Harbour is the seafront from Sha Tin to Tai Po. There's a hiking and cycle path along the whole of the harbour, stretching fronm Ma On Shan to Tai Po.
Very pleasant hike and even more pleasant cycle ride as it's flat and along the edge of the coastline.

Autumn is the best season in HK. Low humidity, nice temperature. Riding along Tolo harbour is enjoyable with the seashore view. Taipo has lots of local food. If you have time, BBQ in Tai Mei Tuk in the evening, is a full day program.

I cannot understand why this is called Tolo Harbour. It is basically both a walkway and cycle track around this beautiful bay. You can walk or jog around the bay across to see the big Kwan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) statute on the other side of the bay from the Science Park and University side. If you happen to be a resident or visitor to the many condo developments you can get lovely views of bay on a clear day. You can hire bicycles by the hour from several shops around the bay. In the evenings, people take strolls and cycle rides as well as fly powerful drones out to the water.
This place definitely does not feel like being in Hong Kong if you associate HK with downtown Mongkok or Causeway Bay. Come here for the day if you need to get away from the hustle and bustle. If you have a car you can drive across to many other beautiful spots for BBQ and peaceful villages.

This is a surprisingly beautiful and tranquil little harbour, tucked away in a rarely visited part of Hong Kong - The New Territories.
The harbour can be reached from the nearby Tai Po Waterfront park and it's possible to take a stroll along its bank.
It features several islands and the skyline of Ma On Shan.

Tolo is a surprisingly attractive harbour in Hong Kong. It can be seen and experienced from communities of Ma On Shan, CUHK University, Science Park until you reach Tai Po.
Of historical interest, Tolo Harbour was a rich pearl bed during many centuries ago. However, overhunting and collecting resulted in pearl oyster extinction by the Ming dynasty. Today the harbour is a sheltered area and recreation area for skiers, kayakers, rowers.
There are miles of promenade for walking, jogging and biking now, providing hours of less leisure area for those wanting to spend some time outside in less crowded areas of Hong Kong. Occasional fishing trawlers can be seen as well as local fisherman working these waters. Most enjoy the harbour by way of the promenade mentioned above.
Note: There is park area in Ma On Shan and Tai Po providing access to the harbour. The promenade along the Shing Mun River (canal) runs by Sha Tin Park as well. Between Science Park and Tai Po there is nature reserve area as well for forrest walks and hikes.
