The area
Neighborhood: Jordan / Yau Ma Tei
The Jordan and Yau Ma Tei neighborhood is where you will find some of the more authentic areas of Hong Kong. Not as glamorous or busy as its neighbors Mong Kok to the north or Tsim Sha Tsui to the south, Yau Ma Tei is often mistakenly overlooked by visitors on their trips to Hong Kong. Exploring parts of this area makes you feel like you’ve been transported back in time. A large part of the neighborhood draws from the rich history of Temple Street, stretching from Jordan to Yau Ma Tei, where a mix of dai pai dongs (outdoor restaurants), market stalls, fortune tellers and old karaoke bars bring out the history and culture of the area. The neighborhood is a showcase of diversity – different ethnicities, cultures, and a mix of old and new.

Yue Hwa is a Hong Kong based department store & group of emporium shops that specialise in Chinese products, quite a bit different to other HK based department stores like Wing On, Sincere, AEON and the likes. This is their flagship place along Nathan Road that is open from 10am to 10pm daily.

What you will find here is a huge five storey place filled with traditional Chinese items ranging from traditional herbal medicines, traditional clothing, furniture, art, instruments, jade, jewellery, household items as well as other more western type items. It is a neat place to walk through if you want to see what a department store and emporium might look like on the mainland.

Visit their website if you want to find one of Yue Hwa other specialty shops located around the city.

I was looking for Buddhist-related calligraphy which was a special request of a gift from my son. I found it here in the from of portable wooden tablets inscribed with the 2 best known psalms.

There are jade pieces, wood carvings, wood dividers, Chinese furntture, Large and small appliances, clothing, etc. etc. Basically, this is the Amazon store of all things from China in a concrete rather than virtual store. If you have enough patience, you can find so many cute and other objects of desire. This could be an all day visit for those who consider shopping as sport.
Also well air conditioned which is a necessity if visiting Hong Kong during the summer.

6 Floors of products coming from mainland china and also from western countries. A nostalgic visit for those who were not knowing it as you can still find some vintage outdated products. Unfortunately far less attractive than it was in the 80's and in the 90's.

On our last day in China, our tour guide recommended this store as a source of last minute souvenirs. It fit the bill. The ground floor had a fascinating assortment of Chinese medicine - herbs and flowers and mushrooms and antelope horns, etc. There was an amazing array of ginseng, going from lower priced pieces in bins to a single wild ginseng root priced at $250,000 US. Upstairs there were beautiful embroidered women's jackets and silk scarves. The clerks were helpful and were able to show us some sale items and to obtain sizes that weren't on the displays. There was also a nice section of hand embroidered pieces and some double sided embroidery in frames. They didn't bargain on the prices, but the variety of quality goods at one stop saved time.

As a tourist, I always bring "a piece of the place" back home as memento. My daughter and I went on foot from our hotel to the various malls along the area of Nathan Road and chanced on Yue Hwa Department Store. Upon entering, we were greeted at the entrance with a table laden with moon and pineapple cakes. Further down, we saw Chinese medicinal products and we realized, that it was exactly the place that we were looking for. I bought moon cakes individually nestled in attractive boxes, jars of ginseng and placenta cream for my sensitive skin and an intricately embroidered jewelry pouch as a welcome addition to my traveling paraphernalia. I was content that I had things native to China that I could bring home together with all the other foreign brands that I had shopped during my trip to Hongkong.

Several floors of Chinese products at fair prices. The sales clerks were attentive and helpful. They offered everything from small inexpensive items to real pearls, silk, linens and real jade. They had everything from herbs and tea to underwear to decorative items to furniture to very expensive porcelains and stone carvings. Allow several hours. It was a wonderful find that was recommended by a local friend of mine.

If you want everything from cashmere underwear to a precious jade bracelet then this is the place to go.

There are several floors selling different things though. The 3rd floor is interesting just to have a look at the various statues and pottery. My favourite floor is the 5th selling various Chinese teas though some of them are quite expensive but I think you get what you pay for.

You can even get some Chinese propaganda stationary on the 4th floor

A great place to have a mooch around.

Unfortunately, the store was undergoing renovations during our visit, but the merchandise was well displayed. Many choices of everything from jewelry to clothing to housewares with the top floor specializing in tea. This was a great middle ground for shopping vs the high end name stores and the street kiosks.
