Integral part of Hong Kong history
Jan 2020
Mei Ho House is part of Hong Kong's first public estate project. Now converted to a hostel, it has a small but illustrative museum showcasing the life of laymen in the 1950s and beyond. This is a great place to understand how the city had emerged from a humble refuge for Chinese immigrants to a cosmopolitan city where more than seven million people call it home.

This free museum is fab - good mock ups of the rooms and interesting detail. Try to get on one of the guided tours as the guides are great and provide lots of extra info.

A Genius Way of Preserving the History !
Apr 2018 • Solo
Heritage Visit to Mei Ho House is highly recommended as it was the first generation public housing in Hong Kong in the 1950s. Through the exhibitions, they are able to preserve the community culture.

It is now revitalized as YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel with Mei Ho House Museum. Due to the revenue from the cafe and hostel, the admission to the museum is free !!

It is about 8 minutes walk from Sham Shui Po MTR Station.

After the visit to the museum, can consider hiking up to Garden Hill for the panorama of Sham Shui Po !!

Educational Site Worth a Visit

Mei Po House is a hidden gem. On the surface, it is located in an old housing block. One will be expecting a similar experience as the URA or Housing Authority. But it turn out to be different. There is a Youth Hostel and a Museum. We were a given a guided tour in the museum which is free. It contains interesting exhibits of the social history of Hong Kong i.e. housing. You get to see how Hong Kongers lived in cramped housing in the past. Definitely a eye opener for foreigners as living conditions differ greatly from ours at home. Nevertheless, please call and check booking before you go there. Cause there is a lunch hour and some days are booked for events.
