Somebody with a lot of money decided to save and store the facades of the old Chongqing city centre when it made way for the new concrete metropolis that we see today. Then the idea progressed into recreating it outside the urban area into a movie set and living museum. The the local boss man Boxilai leant his support to the scheme and an ambitious plan for a leisure attraction that celebrates the Chongqing of old. Recent events, surrounding said politician have sort of derailed this scheme but what you are left with is amazing. A fully reconstructed street of 1950's buildings that came from the original city centre. From the Cathay Theatre to the Flying Tigers Club this place is full of character and history (something the modern city somewhat lacks) there are little restaurants, costume shops, and gift shops to be explored as well as a small park. Fascinating and well worth the hassle getting here. There are no public transport links, if you can't drive I would suggest taking the subway and hiring a taxi for the afternoon.
