Not really worth the wait.
Apr 2021
An average sort of cable-car trip if you like looking into people's apartments and as usual the local's inability to act in a civilised manner when queuing leads to pushing and shoving to get in the car. However if you have spent anytime in China you will have developed your own strategies for dealing with their inherent rudeness. If you like being in a confined space with people shouting at each other then this is for you but the underground is cheaper for the same experience.

Not worth the time
Sep 2019
Based on some blogs, we decided to go to the south side to take the cable car because the line was suppose to be shorter. You can easily get there taking subway #6 (pink) and a 5 minute walk. We went on a Thursday afternoon and the wait was still about an hour. I assume the line would get longer as it gets later or on weekends. After the long line outside (miserable if it's hot and sunny or raining), you get in an elevator to go up to the platform to wait for the cable car. When the cable car arrived and unloaded the incoming passengers, the door opens. Then people were like animals letting out of cage rushing over to try to get the best spot in the car. If you were in the back of the line and couldn't get a spot along the windows, I don't see the point of even doing this. They do pack the car. The ride is about or less than 5 minutes. I guess you could get amazing city views at night or during sunset, but I personally don't feel it's worth the time and energy. Also I would just do one way. Doing round trip means double the waiting time and misery.

Expect a 2-hour wait during summer
Jul 2019
I took the Green line to Jiaochangkou to transfer to Red Line 1 to go to Xiaoshizi and exit 5B. When you come out of this exit, the Cable Car is right behind you. There are areas where you can pay using WeChat Pay or pay cash. Keep in mind that from the moment you buy your ticket, and if it’s busy, you will likely have to wait 2 to 2-1/2 hours to get on the cable car. The ticket has a number on itso you have to get in line when your number is called up on a big neon sign. If you doa round trip, you will likely wait 3-4 hours total. Do a one-way and it's probably easier and faster to walk back across the bridge.
From March 1 to October 31, opening hours are from 0730-2230 and from November 1 to February 28, the opening hours are 0730 to 2130. A one-way ticket is 20 Yuan and round-trip is 30 Yuan.
Liberation Square is about 350m from the Cable Car.

Long Wait, Little To See, Long Wait to Get Back
May 2019 • Solo
It took an hour from the queue for ticket purchase, the queue to go up, the wait for the car, . . . The ride is only about five minutes, then you've got to queue to return. The car is very crowded and unless you're first on, forget being near a window. Even then, the haze is so bad, it's disappointing.

In all, it's a minimum of two hours in queues for ten minutes of riding with a questionable view. Phooey.

Amazing way to see the Yangtze

We took the cable car on a return journey (30RMB). You buy the ticket from the ticket office then join the queue, which looked very long but actually goes down quite quickly. We went from the city centre across to Nambin Rd side and left the cable car station and went to a road side noodle bar nearby and had great food and drink (3 people) all for 60RMB.

Short cable ride across the river, quite fun but worth the wait ?
Sep 2018 • Couples
The cable ride is famous in Chongqing, yet it is just a normal cable ride. The only good thing is it overlooks the Yangtze river; the bad things are the ride is very short about 6 minutes, very long queue takes about 45 minutes and they squeeze a lot of people in one cable car. Quite an average experience and NOT A MUST GO.

SO MANY PEOPLE!!!

Short trip across the river and back. Very long lines both ways. Views of the city available from many other viewpoints. Maybe shorter lines off season and weekdays. Not worth the time.

Enjoyable, but long queues
Apr 2018 • Business
It can be fun if you’re lucky and don’t have to wait in line for too long. Try to go on a weekday and be early to beat the crowds. But if you find a long queue at the ticket office, skip it. It’s just a cable car, after all.

My experience:
I was in Chongqing on a Friday afternoon - generally, not the ideal time for sightseeing in China. Most people take the cable car from the city center (west to east). I came from the other side and had to wait in line for over 30 minutes. Originally, I wanted to buy a return ticket but was adviced against it and upon arrival on the other side I could see why. The lines were significantly longer with people queuing all the way out into the street under a blazing sun. And you always have to line up, even if you already have a ticket. So there’s no way around it.

The ride itself is short. It doesn’t last more than 5 minutes. I enjoyed the view, even though it was a little smoggy that day. It would be great without the queues. But since the cableway is Chongqing‘s main attraction, those will always be there - sometimes more, sometimes less.

As usual with tourist attractions in China, my advice would be to avoid weekends and official holidays. Take the subway or a taxi to the east side (maybe you want to visit popular South Mountain there), where the crowd will be smaller. Check how long the line is and then decide if crossing a river in a small cabin together with twenty other people is worth the wait for you.

Not all that great during the day. They really pack you in there. You can cross the river for a shorter line opposite the Hongyadong. Probably better at night when all the lights come on.
