- Edmond DantesBeijing, China4 contributions500 Clay Luohan statues, unique visit inside LuoHan TempleAn absolute marvel of architecture the LuoHan temple features a room with 500 clay figures representing 500 LuoHan or Arhat ( Arahat), a perfected person who has reached nirvana and freed himself from the bounds of desire and temptation. These 500 clay figures are unique and must see. It is forbidden to take pictures inside the room, so cannot share any here. Luohan temple is located near the touristic center of Chongqing on Yuzhong peninsula, near Guotai Arts Center which features a unique architecture. Around the temple, besides the common shops, there is a little street named Miracle street; there I found a lovely shop offering very special gift items, strong Chongqing and Chinese culture identity very nicely packaged and wrapped. Beautiful architecture, that special "secret" room with the 500 statues is quite amazing. Not that the clay figures are particularly pretty from a pure aesthetic point of view, despite our extensive experience, we'd never seen anything like that!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 21, 2023
- Cliff K3 contributionsExtremely grand, but too commercialised.Though really pretty and grand, this temple feels overly commercialized as it charges hefty fees for almost everything - including entrance. Joss sticks and those mini-candles are extra. It is almost therefore more a tourist attraction than a place that reflects the essence of Buddhism, or a place for serious Buddhists to worship at. However, one good thing perhaps is that the temple grounds are made widely accessible and there even appeared to be guests touring the upper floors.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 31, 2024

Likely the finest piece of workmanship and architecture in Chongqing. The temple complex is massive, and literally crammed with fine ancient Buddhist architecture, both in stone and wood.

In all my travels I am always happiest when I find the jewels of spiritual traditions .. Ancient temples that have survived centuries of wars and natural disasters. The 1000 year old Luohan Si in Chongqing is such a remaining treasure of Buddhisms long past in China. The Buddhas' teachings are still a panacea for the sufferings of all peoples, regardless of where they live in the world. I found it a pity when visiting this temple ,that I was greeted by an atmosphere of elitism and of cultural exclusion...the temple attendants were unfriendly and haughty.. The antithesis of the teachings......crowds of devotees Pushing and shoving to burn incense .... It discredits Buddha dharma and left me feeling very sad.

Been there for just an hour, which is nearly enough. It's beautiful, nice and quiet, right in the middle of the center. Inside the temple there is an interesting ritual in which monachs can predict your future - and they are very good at that. There are some souvenir shops too. To get there take the pink subway line to Xiaoshizi station and use exit 9, the temple is right across the street.

This really is a gem of a temple. Currently standing proud in the middle of an area that has been cleared for yet more construction. Right in the heart of the downtown area, this temple thrives, worshipers and tourists seem only too happy to part with the 10RMB entrance fee just to grab a few moments of tranquility. When you have been to as many temples as I have in China they do all tend to look the same, but this one is different. It's location strikes a contrast in this mega city and just by being well used puts it above the average. The main hall contains over 500 Arhat statues, each brightly depicting a person that has been elevated from the wheel of life. I would recommend you take a break from window shopping in Louis Vitton and visit this temple.

A fascinating visit and a great way to understand how China has become a country of so many very large cities. The Temple is well laid out and easy access so worth spending a good hour simply walking around and looking at the exhibition.

This is one of my favorite temples in Asia. It is easy to get to if you are staying in Jaifengbei (especially at the Intercontinental), but it is a world apart from the high rises. This is an OLD temple (more than 1,000 years) and it has several buildings and you can sort of meander through. The room with the Arhat statues is pretty amazing, but you can't take pictures. You can have a vegetarian Buddhist lunch here too. The pretty lotus candles make a nice cheap souvenir.

Find the entrance can be tricky, but not impossible, because it is surrounded by high rise skyscrapers.
From the outside it does not look like a big temple, but once you get into it, it is quite a big complex of shops, temples, shops and selling stands.
The whole building complex is being rebuilt in concrete and refurbished with the usual decoration. We were shocked by the lots of people paying theirs respects to the buddhist deities.
Some warders won’t let you use your camera.
We do not regret spending a couple of hours in this old monastery.
