Chongqing city
Oct 2013
We spent two days in chongqing city. We stayed at chongqing south garden hotel, it is about twenty mins by taxi from the centre of city however there is a train station within walking distance and the hotel was cheap, really clean and very nice. The hotel has Internet access but not wifi. From memory it was 200y per night and includes breakfast. The street the hotel is on is lined with sichuan restaurants so you won't be short of choice. As the hotel is out of town and away from the tourist area the food prices are very reasonable however all the menus are in mandarin. We spent the first day walking around the old part of town checking out houses built on stilts, local alleyway markets selling goods, tasting local dishes and up to the stone wall at the enterence of town. You can walk up the stairs to get to top of the wall, there is a great little piazza lined with trees and a guy selling a large pot of local tea for 10y. It is a good way to relax after all the walking. The city for was good to see but I personally feel that a day was plenty of time to explore. The next day we headed to the foothills and spent the day soaking at the tianci hot springs. We caught a taxi out there (100y) but caught the bus back (6y). The spa costs 88y per person. The spa complex is outdoors and it clean and modern. You get a towel and a locker to put all your belongings in. There are different of pools: whirlpool, herbal soaking baths, fish bath, kids playing pool. The is a kiosk selling food (albeit limited) and drinks. Next to the spa complex is a large garden which is really nice to stroll around in. A highlight of chongqing was definitely sampling all the local spicy dishes.
