This is one of the oldest gates still standing in Chongqing. It was a focus of attacks in several premodern attempts to capture the city, including the successful assault of the peasant rebel leader Zhang Xianzhong, who captured the city in 1645 en route to establishing a short-lived kingdom in Sichuan. There is dramatic rendering of an attack on the walls by life-sized statues. On top one can see plaques of historic battles, including that by Zhang, as well as an ancient bell. An interesting diversion in the middle of a bustling neighborhood. Well worth checking out for the historically minded,
