About
In a bid to put this architectural icon left over from the 2008 Olympic Games to good use, the Bird's Nest stadium in Beijing has been transformed into a winter theme park from December to February in recent years. The Ice and Snow festival features winter sports such as skiing on a man-made slope and ice skating, as well as other activities for the whole family. Other attractions are ice bumper cars, sledding, snowball fights, ice castles and stage shows.

Beijing in so many ways can outdo any city when it comes to showing off its capabilities (Summer Olympics 2008 for example) in categories such as musical, historical and cultural significance. However, Harbin’s Ice festival is world renowned and is actually pretty spectacular. While the bird’s nest show is actually pretty cool and entertaining, it pales in comparison to Harbin's. Unlike in Harbin, there won’t be buildings made of ice, rather there will be fake ice but it is still pretty cool nonetheless. It’s almost like a mini fair with ice. To add to the scene, it is in the Bird’s Nest and I do love the feeling here so I try to attend every year just to see what the planners have come up with this year.

The whole stadium floor gets covered in ice with beautiful ice sculptures and displays. Too bad it was closed by the time we arrived, so ensure you get there early in the day.

The Bird's Nest looked soft and graceful - an engineering marvel since its all steel. Too bad we couldn't go in because it was closed, but what we could see from outside was great. Some well placed lighting treatment and the Nest looked better at night than in daylight.

Across it is The Cube - with multi colored dancing lights and it was a spectacle to behold. The Chinese are really great builders - and they have been so for thousands of years!

The Olympic Stadium is huge, and we were there during winter - we were so cold we couldn't tour the entire place. Maybe better to come in spring time.

Just near the escalators leading to the underground trains is a cute little souvenir shop with lots of stuffed panda toys in all sizes. Plus ref magnets, key chains, fans, pens, shirts, etc -- a souvenir shopper's paradise! And the price were really reasonable, compared to say with the Beijing Zoo souvenir shops. We were so happy we nearly did the jig! ;)
