Thought this tour was extremely overpriced. The experience of having lunch prepared and served in a local home was quite good. The so called 'famous cricket man ' who provided the entertainment opening and letting out a couple of crickets was a waste of time. The best part was when the owner played his Chinese musical instrument outside after the lunch.

We came here on the 2nd day after arriving to China, it was nice to see the old-fashioned and historic part of Beijing. Everything else in the city is pretty much modern. We had lunch with a local family, where we had a cooking demonstration and then a very tasty home made food. That part was really lovely too: to be allowed to see how people live their life. The hosts (husband and wife in their late 60s) talked about their family and their home, we asked them a lot of questions, they were so genuine, it was so sweet.

DId a small tour on the rickshaw but it was a complete waste of time. They kept getting snarled up, loads of people in the way and so slow. Hardly saw a thing.

Nearly didn't go on this tour as I thought a bit too touristy. The rickshaw ride certainly is but the surrounding lakes and old style Hutongs were nice to see. Meal and entertainment at family house was terrific. Recommend.

We did a rickshaw ride around the Hutong district it was fun going through the backstreets seeing how the locals live, visiting shops and seeing the sites around the lake. It gave us another side of Beijing and a fantastic experience.
Later that evening we enjoyed a typical Chinese dinner with a family in their Hutong which was over 500 years old. The meal was fantastic and it kept on coming. During the evening we were entertained by old and internationally acclaimed Chinese man who raises and trains crickets and grasshoppers. Cricket training goes back centuries. They were trained to fight and were part of everyday living centuries ago the Chinese and past Emperors also kept them not only for entertainment but also for gambling.

Sadly for us, our tour guide arranged this segment to start at 4.20pm. Not smart when the rickshaws finish at 4.30pm. We literally had less than 10 minutes on the ride and paid full price. The drivers were so keen to finish that we literally rode through the hutong area for less than 10 minutes, unable to take any photos and were dropped at the end point wondering what we were supposed to have experienced. I am sure at the right time of the day the ride would be good but this day it was a total waste. You are better off walking.

This was what I expected Beijing to be like, or more of it than is left.
Here is only a small part protected from old Beijing. Everything else has been torn down and replaced with “bigger and better“. We went on a tour to a family for dinner and asked a few questions.. Saw the way things were “once upon a time”. Enjoyed the Tai Chi in the courtyard and seeing a Cricket Trainer (yes, the insect cricket). Wandering round he Hutong restaurant district was also a nice Chang elf pace. They still have the pedicabs but I think here is a long wait for them. Interesting to people watch.

Our tour group all experienced the tour. It was interesting and several scenic photo opportunities existed. But without any tour guide input during the tour is missing. You are left to speculate exactly what you are seeing.

We went here as part of a TripADeal tour. It including a rickshaw ride that was ok, followed by walking tour near the small lake, then an hour to spend in the shopping laneway, and ending up with a nice dinner in a local home. The dinner was nice but we didn't really have much interaction with the local family. The rest was of the day was ok. THere was an ATM at the bank that accepted our cards so that was a treat to get some cash. THere was also a western public toilet in the area that was also a treat.

Hello, and a thousand apologies as this is one question I cannot assist you with. We were extremely fortunate to have Amanda and she was our tour guide for the duration via 'Trip-a-deal'....Maybe someone out there can help you? I hope so!

We recommend the Beijing Company called Hutong Tour. They can be found on Tripadvisor. They offer different Hutong Tour variations. We recommend choosing the one which offers a Hutong Tour with Tea Tasting and Encounter with the Cricket Man! You can read our review about the Tour we took and see photographs as well on Hutong Tour’s TripAdvisor page. Our guides Storm Li and Sunny were great. You can request for them.

Hi, I just bought the tour on the tripadvisor but the voucher does not specify a tour start time. Besides calling a Chinese number, is there an email address that I can use to contact your company to find out when exactly my tour would start? Thank you!
