- Daniel ABeijing, China37,415 contributionsMy wife had always wanted to visit Gubei Water Twon, but whenever we have time off work, so does the rest of China and this place is usually packed. The hotels are very expensive too; between 2,500-3,500 a night. We came during Tomb Sweeping Festival on a Sunday when the rest of the people had to return to work and we paid 900rmb. It turned out to be perfect because there were far fewer people and got to experience the place in comfort. Be prepared as virtually no one speaks English except for the hotel front desk and even that is not certain. The sights are fantastic, the food is okay and the comfort level on an off day was very uplifting. The drone night show was pretty cool and way more than what I had imagined as the drones laid out near the Great Wall. The hot springs are indeed hot and were not crowded. The ride on the waterway was short, but doable. The staff were welcoming and most people were pleasant. This should be on a list of things not to pass up during an extended stay in Beijing.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 17, 2024
- iVNovosibirsk, Russia2,388 contributionsCool place, liked it. We traveled two hours by bus to look at the wall, and walked around this village along the way. On the way back we spent the whole evening here, it was beautiful both during the day and in the evening, there were a lot of restaurants, although they were quite expensive. The cost for the visit was 680 yuan for three. We wanted to go back by bus at 21:00, but it didn’t arrive, so we paid 500 yuan for a taxi and the same two hours to the center of Beijing. They say that the wall here is better than anywhere else in the surrounding area, it is better to go on a weekday, there will be fewer people.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 21, 2024
- Racefield2013Bangkok, Thailand53 contributionsWhat a fantastic day! Going to the Great Wall is a once in a lifetime experience! Christina, our guide, explained everything very well and made sure we had all the relevant information. Highly recommend this tour by Klook. All include picking up from the hotel and Chinese halal hotpot lunch.Visited January 2025Traveled with familyWritten January 1, 2025
- Akiko FTianjin, China452 contributionsI think it is quite difficult to go there on an individual basis. I had a Chinese staff couple at work take me by car! It's a theme park, so everything is made up, but it's built to get the most out of it, so you forget it's made up. Or rather, I don't think that matters. You can also experience various things. The Great Wall is real. There are places that are crumbling and there are climbs. You can climb up and down on the ropeway. You can also walk the whole way. There are not many people in the morning so I recommend it!Visited November 2024Traveled with friendsWritten November 23, 2024
- Tittletattle85 contributionsWhat a great way to see the Great Wall without the crowds and in a dramatic location. The cable car only takes you part way through and the remaining climb is steep and not for the feint hearted. Dramatic photos everywhere and despite the fact that Gubei is recently created it has all the charm of somewhere older. The evening drone show is first class.Visited October 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 19, 2024
- Leong Chee ShengSingapore, Singapore353 contributionsVery beautiful town even though it is artificially constructed over 5 year period. We went there with tour that gives you access to tour the water town and also to Simatai Great Wall via a cable car and short hike. The town is beautiful with a few interesting food to try, and has quite a bit of ancillary activities going on, ranging from traditional opera singing, drone performance, to water show and photo opportunities with artists in traditional costume. We were told the activities vary across seasons so do check before booking if you're concerned about this. We were so lucky to catch a drone show at night! You also get to see the Simatai Great Wall light up in the night by the town. Food and drinks are on pricier tourist side but a nice experience in all.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 3, 2024

It is an antique town with thorough commercial development. You can experience the style of the Jiangnan water town without leaving Beijing. In the town, you can overlook the Jinshanling Great Wall, and there will also be a drone show at night. There are many hotels with different prices located there, as well as private hot springs to choose from. You can choose to take shuttle buses to various attractions. Hotel prices in the town skyrocket during the peak tourist season, so it is recommended to visit during the off-season.

This is around 130 km outside of Beijing, 1.5 hr driving. The place is phenomenal though gets crowded during the weekend. We stayed there for two night within the water town. ( Be careful not all hotels accept foreigners so you have to call them and confirm that). Plenty of places to eat . Along with Chinese food , you get your Pizza , burger and steak so don't worry about the food there . Make sure to go around the whole place during the day and then at night. Try to climb the hill of Gubei church in the evening to see the whole place lit up. We also took the cable to Simatai Great wall . It is a broken great wall , even after the cable it is still a steep climb. It is bit expensive though. Its not worth to go up to the great wall in the evening , you might want to stay and enjoy the water town in the evening. And if you like photography , this is your place . we were there in 1st week of Nov so great time to see the red Ivy all over the water town and of course great weather. A must visit place.

This water town is about 2 hours drive from Beijing city. For those who have been to Wuzhen (in outskirts of Shanghai), there is a heavy resemblance as I'm told that this place is modeled after the latter.
There is plenty to do inside. The bonus of going in winter is that the streams are frozen and converted to skating rinks. There are also ice sculptures at various parts of the town.
The other advantage of visiting this town is that it is linked to the Simatai leg of the Great Wall. It is best to stay until evening time as the lights of the town and the Great Wall are magnificent.

This re-enactment of the actual watertown is very well constructed and has a range of wonderful little shops and alleyways. BUT try to go on a weekday. Weekends are hectic and full of crowds. Has a nice vibe. The lightshow with more than 80 drones dancing in the sky was quite incredible.

Super cute town & fun place for a one night getaway. Yes, it’s a little pricey but it really was beautiful. We stayed in a quaint inn that was relatively clean & had a balcony overlooking the canal. The park was extremely clean & well-maintained. We paid to take the cable car up the mountain & to take a boat ride through the canal but exploring the town was included in the cost. We could have easily spent more time at this beautiful park & hope to return in the future.

Take a taxi to Dongzhimenwai bus station, aiming to arrive no later than 820am. Look for bus 980 and/or a small sign referring to gubei. The cost is 48yuen.. cash only (no alipay or WeChat) and is paid as you're boarding. It departs 9am daily

We went to visit at the start of December. It was freezing cold but that added to the charm of the place, the lake was frozen and there were some lovely snow sculptures. Made the place even more photogenic!
Spent the afternoon wandering around seeing the beautiful sights and trying some of the food at the small vendors. There are also cafes and restaurants where you can sit indoors.
We waited until the evening for the drone display. It was wonderful, never seen anything quite like it!
Overall it was a great place to unwind and get out of the city. I would recommend to everyone visiting Beijing. It is worth the long and slightly cramped bus journey on the 51. But you can take a didi if you're feeling fancy!

I half expected re-enactments because this place gave me theme park vibes. I enjoyed walking around and trying the food. I enjoyed wondering around the town, maybe there wasn’t much more to offer considering the pandemic but it would have been nice to see. Bring bugs spray for the evening cause they swarmed my and my party 😩

If I'm trying to get to Jinshanling section of the Great Wall from Gubei Watertown, are there available taxis in the area? Or will Didi work out there? I got quoted 150 RMB (~$21 USD) for that trip which is a ~30 minute drive ... just curious if there were other options. Thanks in advance!

If I'm taking a bus there, are there English speaking tour guides available once you arrive? Or are they necessary?
Written March 17, 2024
Our driver says it’s not worth visiting it’s just a commercial business recreation.
I thought it was ancient buildings?
Is it or not?
We won’t be there till end of November and think it will be pretty cold then....

I am not sure if your driver is chinese and local to Beijing ?? But Gubei is a collection of old villages and brought together in Gubei it’s authenticity is very good must have cost a fortune but simatai the oldest bit of the wall is very close and is the best of the Chinese’s Great Wall it’s under UNESCO and was built in 550 -557 built in the Qi dynasty also really old and on the Yanshan mountain .and the peking mountains are very rugged and dramatic it’s beautiful your going into the countryside . I would visit it it’s like going to London and not visiting the Crown Jewels or visiting England and not going to Stonehenge . The water town was well worth the visit i enjoyed it the nearest water town to Beijing the next other is in Shanghai which is Nanxun but I went to see the old part of the historic wall .. I really found it like a small shangrila you won’t be dissapointed . Take care and enjoy the experience

An you take a DiDi from badaling to mutianyu?
Written September 11, 2019
If I go to Samaita wall at the gubei water town and take the 21:00 bus to dongzhimen station and arrive around 23:00... would I get stranded cause to my knowledge the metro stop running around that time..and it will be a 3 hour walk to downtown?
Written September 10, 2019
Most metro trains have their last journey start at 23:00 (next train @ 05:00). You should be able to get a taxi (around $7). Have a look at the Rome2rio travel app. It says the walk would be around 1.5 hours. Not smart especially if in winter.
Written September 10, 2019
Can someone recommend a driver to take us to & from Gubei on the 6th September? We would like to stay till 9pm, to see the light show. What would be the cost? I checked at my hotel and the return cost is very expensive. Thanks
Written September 4, 2019
Postscript to my earlier post: If you decide on the shuttle bus option be sure to PRE-BOOK your return, a lot of people use this service that stay to see the light show and you cannot just turn up and get a seat.
Cheers

Hi, Anyone know how to go from Beijing International Airport to Gubei Water town ? How do I get there using public transportation?
How to book the hotel in Water Town ?
How to buy online ticket to go in Water Town and Simatai Great Wall ?
Written July 8, 2019
The easiest way to Gubei is to catch a bus from Dongzhimen Bus Station. The Bus Station is located a short walk to the east of Dongzhimen Metro Station, which is the terminus for the direct metro from Beijing Airport. The public bus service runs a limited time schedule, however, private bus operators are located on the road outside the bus depot and charge the same rate as the public service, their buses are also more comfortable. Going to Gubei for a one day visit is not viable, if you plan on coming direct from the airport it is 45 minutes from the airport to Dongzhimen, the you have to walk to the bus depot and provided you do not get lost this will take 15 - 20 minutes and then you have to catch a bus, the bus journey is one and a half hours. It will take the same time by taxi but will be a lot more expensive. Everything at Gubei is controlled from a central administration area, that is hotels, entrance fees etc. Except for the two big resort hotels most hotels in Gubei are boutique style hotels with 9 - 12 rooms, these need to be booked on line (effectively through the administration office). I used a com website to book my "trip"

Hi, could you tell me how to book hotel in Gubei Water Town for family 6 person ?
Around 20 November, Gubei Water Town have snow and how is the weather ?
Written July 8, 2019
We were part of a tour group, the hotels were all arranged and booked by Asia Travel. We travelled there by coach which was also part of the tour. The hotel we stayed at ( The Gubei WaterTown Hotel, I think!) may have been the only hotel there. It was an excellent hotel!
Good luck, do the wall when youre there!
