The ticket is based on your passport number. You go to a window on the right as you wander in with your back to Tiananmen Square. They validate your passport on their screen then you go to the entrance and they look your pp no up and in you go. Get a headset - it clicks into life as you walk along automatically. Don't spend on a tour or a guide.

We went last week of August (last week of Chinese vacation, so not as busy they said)
Be prepared for chaos at the entrance if you travel without a guide.
We asked our hotel to buy the tickets online which they all knew how to do. We arrived for the early time (morning or evening times). we knew there would be a lot of people so we tried to be early.. a LOT of people had gotten that idea, so be prepared for a lot of people. It was pretty confusing when we got there.. do we go to a ticket counter to convert our online admission with a real ticket or do we just go where everyone else go and show our passport?.. the latter, showing the passport is all you need to do at the entry point (where you get screened). it is ONE big line so just get in there and dont let people push their way in front of you. and stick together if only one person carries the passports.. super easy to get separated. Dont let it scare you not to do this on your own.. you will figure it out, it is just a little overwhelming to start with.
Side note: if you want to do Tiananmen Square do it first or be prepared to walk all the way back on the outside of the Forbidden City as the exit is at the opposite end.
Once inside the Forbidden City you move with the hordes of people thru the 3 main gates (buildings) until the end where people seem to spread out to the outer parts of the city. Here you will find exhibitions of different themes and focuses. After a while it all blurs together as all buildings look the same.
Remember to bring water as you can buy very little inside. We spend about 3 hours there but could easily spend another 2 if we wanted to explore more.
We did not have a guide or used the Audio guide available (audio experience from other attractions were not good). Guide would be helpful for more historical knowledge, but not needed unless you want the details.

The sheer volume of people here is enough to set anyone's anxiety off. We were herded through the main gates like cattle and were directed to a specific ticket kiosk/station. We had to present our passports, but it was easy to get the tickets from there.

Once through the gates, we opted to purchase GPS guided tours, which were only about $6USD. That was worth it, quite frankly because The Forbidden City is just too massive to walk through without some form of a guide. The GPS guides automatically start playing when you reach certain locations, which is cool. This was not included in the ticket we purchased through TripAdvisor.

We had no one to help us translate, so it was nice to have the entry process taken care of beforehand. The Forbidden City only allows a certain number of visitors in each day, and most of those tickets are purchased in advance. We didn't want to risk getting there and not being able to get in. This ticket was a few USD more than at the gate, but we saved ourselves a headache in the end.

The information on TripAdvisor is now 10 years out of date !!!
We have been told that the entrance moved in 2009 from Jingshan Front street to the south entrance off Tian’anmen square.
DO NOT GO TO Jingshan Front Street. It is a 2.3km walk around the outside of the forbidden city to the correct entrance and you will be mobbed by people trying to sell rickshaw rides at exorbitant prices.
However the Forbidden City itself is amazing and worth all the hassle!

Dear Friend Thank you taking your valuable time to write a review for us. About your issue. On the website, it's very clear. With pre-booked admission, use your passport to access at the main entrance, directly across from Tiananmen Gate. Take this chance, we also want to clearfied some important informations about the ticket service. The first, to buy the ticket on our webisite, must provide all the passport numbers, leave all the passport number in the same form is fine. Because the passport gona to be your ticket. If any number not correct(it's happened many times already), you won't be able to go inside. The second, this ticket is only valid for the travel day, any other days will not working. The third, with the same passport number, only could buy one ticket a day. That means, if your passort information is in the system during the day, you cann't buy ticket anymore. Regards Lily

I was rejected at the counter designated by Vialtor and they sent me to the passport counter, where they could definitively not find my online booking. They finally let me in after 30 minutes, just based on my good face. Not a good experience at all having flown 10000km to visit the forbidden city and about to miss it

Dear Christophe, Thanks for taking your time to share your valuable feedback with us, and we are sorry to learn that you had some issue at the entrance. For forbidden City Admission ticket, the attraction requires all participants to provide correct passport name and number upon booking. If provided info does not match, your ticket can not be found in attraction reservation system. Based on your Viator Booking BR-642185635, we made ticket reservation by the name and passport number based on your request. We would like to take this opportunity to let you know a great news! From May 4, 2018, for people who purchase this Forbidden City admission ticket on TripAdvisor/Viator are entitled for “Direct Entry” at the Main Entrance. All you have to do is to bring your passport with you on the travel date. No longer need to redeem ticket at the counter of Comprehensive Service Window. In addition to standalone ticket, we also offer 5-Hour Skip The Line Ultimate Discovery of Forbidden City Tour on the site, and this small group tour offers centrally hotel pickup service and professional tour guide. We would love you to experience this great tour with us. Last but not least, Forbidden City only offers 80,000 tickets daily. It's very important that you have your ticket purchased in advance. Please ensure you and your party members' full name (must match your passport) and passport number is provided and accurate upon booking for the standalone ticket product. Thank you Lily

I purchased these tickets under the false premise that they would help cut line time. They didn’t. Nobody was paying to get in. The lines were for security. Locals showed their IDs and we had to present our passports. I would like my money back. This is a scam.

Dear Sylvia Thank you for this feedback. We are happy to tell you some information that the whole world know. Forbidden city is Not free. It's limited 80000 tickets per day. And in the high season, the tickets would sold out many days before. You would feel very lucky that someone here charge you very very little service fee to buy the ticket for you today. Otherwise, you come to Beijing from far away cann't enter inside. How pity? The locals to buy Forbidden city ticket should provide the ID card number and name. So ID card would be the ticket during the day. (Again it's not free, you have to pay in advance). That's why you saw all the people were provide ID card to enter to Forbidden city directly. The foreigners to buy Forbidden city ticket should provide the passport number and fullname. So your passport would be your entry ticket during the day. And No body would promise you to skip the line to enter Forbidden city. If you are the Donald Trump. It's another story. All the others would be the same. Enter from main entrance out from north exit. I hope when you see the reply. Please remove this review. The whole world would laugh at you. More tips for you. We can just scan the ID card to get on all the bullet train in China. Would you think it's all free? Thanks Lily

We went twice to the Forbidden City - in mid- August and September. In September you have less crowds but the heat is still affecting you. Go early in the morning. From our experience there are very few tour guides who can tell interesting stories about the Places. It's better to get the audio set and explore the enormous ares by yourself. Good luck!!

It is advisable to buy tickets before arrival to avoid disappointment as a limited number of people are allowed entry each day. The Forbidden City is a must-see and of course very busy, so very early or mid-afternoon entry is recommended. Be prepared to walk for several hours and after exiting walk across the road to the top of Jingshan Park for a spectacular view of the entire site. The ticket purchase was easy and efficient. An immediate email confirms the ticket matched to passport number; just show your passport at the entry gate to gain entry.
