The summer palace was an experience that awakened my childhood memories, even though it was my first visit to China. This was probably due to the huge impact it had on world culture, since without my knowledge I had seen from small images of this wonderful complex of buildings and gardens around the incredible Kunming lake. Despite the very large number of visitors I managed to find some quiet corners for photos and capture some fugitive moments that traveled me back in time, in a world that sought inner peace, the wonderful and immortality.
As for practical matters, I bought a ticket at the entrance, without making a reservation in advance. Also, I stayed until the closing and so there was a lot of people outside waiting for a taxi. However, I found it relatively easy. The problem was that at that time the traffic in Beijing was very high, so the taxi driver suggested to leave me at a metro station instead of taking me to the center, which was the best solution.

We visited here in April on a very cold day. Still this did not detract from the scenery. The lake was very picturesque and the history was amazing. We had a terrific guide who was a wealth of knowledge on the palaces etc.We also went on a boat ride across the lake and the guide explained the various features and buildings. We felt a guide was essential as one just walking around wouldn’t be able to fully appreciate the place

The lake inside the summer palace is handmade and a copy of the real Kunming lake.
The summer palace consist in tree quarters of lake and the rest are buildings and park area.
Great place for a pick nick a walk and some good pictures.

After seeing some lakes and parks around China, I found this place nothing special, in particular during winter. The lake - of course - will be frozen and that doesn't help to enjoy the surrounding ambient. Of course there are tons of frozen lake breathtaking all around China... well... that's not the case.
Just don't waste too much time going around this park.

We entered the Summer palace grounds from a gate on the east side of the lake. It makes a nice walk then up to the Long corridor and up the stairs to the tower.
The lake itself is quite nice with a wide road lined with benches and places to stop and enjoy the view of the lake and the Tower in the distance, nice photo chances can be found all along the walk north. Too much to see all in one day.

great place to relax in the spring summer and fall, very cold in the winter but still worth a visit, there are reasonably priced cafes and restaurants around this lake where one could warm up during the winter.

This is within Yuanmingyuan, and the lake itself was very beautiful when I went because there was nobody else there. Tranquil spot to rest. However, it's a bit difficult to get to since Yuanmingyuan is so huge. I think within Yuanmingyuan you need to pay to ride the cart to get anywhere. It's not walkable on your own.

Do check out the South Lake Island,as there are some photos (inside the chamber) of last empiror of Qing dynasty.
Although it is a kind of replication, at least some connection to the palace and imagine how their living during that period.
Bring along with you some drinks, hot tea and snack as it is slow walking along and around the Kunming Lake, not notice any stores at that part of the Summer Palace.
