We walked here from Nanluoguxiang and its mostly the same things except it's across a nice lake. The area is very big if you're thinking of walking around the entire lake... we actually gave up halfway. Walk around the main area where the food is, and if you're up for it, visit the row of pubs by the river. They have live band performances so it gets pretty lit at night.

Lovely old area in which we took a pedicab tour around the old streets which are very narrow. We then wandered around the shops, plenty of eating available and spotted a roof top bar but unfortunately we couldn't find the entrance so we settled for a cocktail overlooking the lake. Busy afternoon but very pleasant.

We had a wonderful walk around the frozen lake. If we had had more time we would have done ice skating. Loads of food stalls and good busy bars with live music. Highly recommend

Houhai area what's in here:
1. Houhai lake
2. Bar street
3. Near drum tower
4. Near Nan Lu Gou Xiang (an alley of shops in courtyard)
5. Few minutes to Wangfujing
6. Few minutes to Sanlitun (another bar street)
7. Few minutes to Goujie (Chinese food street)
8. Near subways (line 6, line 2)
9. No high rise building the most is 6 stories without lift.
10. Near Forbidden City and Tia'an men Square

Why people visit Houhai?
1. Personally, because so many small shops to buy 10 RMB stuff.
2. If not weekend more chances to explore the very Chinese courtyard lifestyle or to gaze at the structures.
3. Very commercialized area many street vendors and fake stuff good for short term use yet makes me feel happy lol
4. Nice view of the lake at night in summer.
5. Winter season they froze the lake for ice skating and other ice fun-activities.
6. You can walk from popular places for tourists to explore (mentioned above)
7. You wanted to buy souvenirs for your family back home? And you're saving? But you wanted something very Chinese stuffs? Hit Houhai area!
8. There's this bargain shop building after that white arc bridge (I cannot say the name in English because I can't speak or read Mandarin) but you will know it's the right place if you see the reindeer and Christmas decor outside the building the whole year round.

TIPS:
1. Too crowded during the weekend.
2. Long queue on everything if you visit during the tourism season
3. Mind your purse.
4. Ignore the beggars.
5. Bring camera or action cameras for documentation lol
6. Bargain if possible. If the price of a fake silk scarf is 200 RMB go lower to 30 RMB at least.
7. Many public bikes around. Do you know how to scan the QR CODE?

I have several videos though. Hit me!

I have been in Beijing for 5 days, and I wanted to see what the nightlife was like here. I ended up at the Houhai Bar Street, Xicheng District; which was a nice surprise. I first arrived at a concrete park (which is on Di'ANJMEN WEST ST), and there were people playing a game called, "Cuju". It is where you kick a "Shuttlecock" or similar to a bean bag in the USA (but larger/different), and the idea is to never let it hit the ground; as you kick it up in the air. The game usually has 3-6 people, but I bet you can play with fewer or more. There was also group dancing going on, and this was on a Saturday night at about 830-9pm

As you walk away from the platform, you see a waterway and it divides your walking path in two directions. It is very pretty, and there are man restaurants and eateries around this waterway. The deeper you walk down either pathway, you start to see karaoke bars or establishments where bands are performing on stage. There are MANY. I bet there are more than 75 that I saw with my eyes. I was shocked. Most bars have huge clear glass windows, and it is easy to go inside and make yourself at home. If you are looking to have a nice calm evening, you can walk around, or take one of the boats that are offered (at a price starting at around 150-200 RMB/Yuan) to stroll around the waterway. It was very picturesque, as it had gotten dark, and the lights were very pretty. I saw families, children, and people seemed to be having a good time. I think this event would fit all types of situations (single/couples/families).

I paid about 35 Yuan to get there, but know that you will probably pay more to get back to your hotel, when the subway has shut down for the nights, and taxis are one of your only options left (as bus service may not be comfortable for foreigners to use). I was staying at the Novotel on Chongwenmen Xi Da Jie, so you can estimate what costs may be from your respective location.

My advice is to TRY to take a "Multi Colored" taxi that runs off meters. There are many fraudulent/illegal cabs (all will be regular vehicles - all the same color and not multi colored), and they can change pricing on you; especially if you don't speak Chinese. If you are going to take a chance, make sure you negotiate BEFORE YOU GET IN THE CAB WITH NO METER. I did end up having to do this, as the multi colored cabs were few in number when I left at 11:30pm.

I thought this was a great venue to enjoy an evening, and I have posted a few pictures to show you what I saw. I left happy:)

I went by myself around midday and was delighted I went. It's close to a subway station and about 5 mins from there is Houhai Bar St. It's a really lovely area with bars (as the name suggests!) and restaurants- with a lake as a backdrop- lovely. I found a great place for a drink across the bridge where there was live Chinese rock music which was really good. Would have liked to go back in the evening bit had no time on this occasion. The place has a definite buzz- great for a short time.

When u reach the pub area, some touts will follow you around asking you to go to their bar. I believe they get a commission, so try to shake them off other wise your bill will be more expensive.

So we got into one of the pubs . Make sure there is no min spending. Ordered 2 coronas costing 60rmb each. When the bill came , it's 150. 120 + service charge of 30. They don't even show you the bill. So the service charge is 25% which is ridiculous.

So here's a tip. Before you go into any of the pubs, ask them if there is min spending. Then ask them do they levy a service charge and if there is how much is it.

Beijing is a ridiculously expensive city to visit in China. If you don't know your way around, you will get fleeced.

Its nestled next to a big lake and during the evenings, with all the neon lights, bars with live bands playing and the crowds it transforms into a hip bar street. There are numerous options, and I'd suggest take a walk along and then decide to settle in. Even then, crawl a few pubs and experience different bands/music and food/drink menus.

Coming by in the day and night will present a different mood and look to houhai. In the day its peaceful, there are local folks walking their dogs, fishing but at night the place transforms into bustling bars and restaurants.
