The theatre was on the first floor of a hotel. We had excellent seats to see a colourful presentation of song, story telling and dance. There were three separate vignettes, each with a different character. Be sure to arrive about 30 minutes early to see one of the performers apply his makeup and put on his elaborate costume for the... More

Oh my, so different from western opera. It's not an exaggeration to say that the sounds of the singers and their instruments are like screetching cats. The costumes were well done.

We went to the Liyuan Theatre (Qianmen Hotel), to see the opera. We paid 200y per person (2 people) for our seats. We saw two stories, we liked it but to our surprise it was done after the second story, this whilst we thought the show would still go on for half an hour. The actors left as fast as... More

I was told the Peking Opera's days are numbered. Chinese people simply don't have an interest anymore, which was confirmed when the theater filled with mostly western tourists. The performance lasts for approx. 75 minutes with three different stories. I actually enjoyed the performance and seeing the nice costumes. It's a little hoax-y but still a part of Chinese tradition.... More

I would be lying if I said I said I thought that the music was fab. It isn't to my ear, but this is a fascinating experience and absolutely essential to understand the China of old, its culture et al. It was nowhere near as I had feared and I am definitely glad I went but I am also pleased... More

I am an Opera fan but this was not what I was expecting.I found it very boring and just a lot of noise. The battle scene was the only interesting part but even that could not save the day.I would not recommend this show

I teach in Beijing and I will be honest; I didn’t care for the Chinese Opera at all but nonetheless, I was very glad to have gone and see firsthand the lore of the cultural show. 95% of my students are Chinese and I want to know all about my students, their history and customs. While I wasn’t entertained, I... More

As part of our 20 day Grand Circle trip through China The Opera was in a hotel complex (70 years old but looking brand-new on the inside lobby and outside). We had dinner in the elaborate hotel restaurant and then into the theater. Wow Grand circle had set us up in tables (with snacks and drink) right in front of... More

To be fair, I am not a fan of opera. We attended the Chinese opera as part of the compromises one makes when traveling as a couple! I loved the costumes and the story which is translated into English. The music did not help increase my appreciation. However, I loved being able to walk to the stage to see the... More

The opera was very classic. Most of the time, you can't actually understand what they were saying but they have screen on the theater with captions. Interesting at first but quite boring as the opera plays longer. For my experience, most tourists did not wait till the end of the show. Maybe most of them found it too boring. It... More
