Very large memorial square with the entrance to the Forbidden City to the North and Mao's tomb to the South. The Beijing National Museum is to the East and is much more interesting than the square itself. As long as the line isn't too long you can file past Mao's body in his mausoleum but there isn't much to see.

This is a very popular and important tourist place for local and overseas tourists. Huge place, only walking is allowed. Getting into is a security check process, lengthy que but efficient. Carry passport if from overseas.

Must book in advance, at least 1 day in advance but 2 days better. Very tight security, airport style, and they search handbags. Great views; but again if you want to go to the museum you need to book, and it had very long queues to get tickets.

Always wanted to go here if only just for the history I’ve learned about this place and what I’ve seen on tv. So yes I still can’t believe I have been here. We could not walk in the centre bit of Tian’anmen square as they had just finished a marathon that was on. The place was packed with tourist so very busy. There were big picture up of very important people. It’s a massive square. I once saw on tv where a man was what looked like being mowed down by a tank many years ago, well I saw where it happened and found out the man did not die. So I was pleased about that. There is so much to take in you really do have to be there yourself.

I live in Beijing, and if you are planning out one day, you want tian’anmn, palace museum, and jingshan park. Go to the nearby mall for dinner after. Overall this would be a fantastic day full of pictures and rich history!

Gate of Heavenly Peace (aka, Tiananmen Tower) is the very impressive main entrance to the Forbidden City. You can go through this gate and see both sides free. The ticket office and ticket check point are more than 100 metres beyond this point. It was originally constructed in 1420, and it is most famous for being the location from which Chairman Mao announced the formation of present day China. Similar to most buildings of the Forbidden City, you can only see the outside of the building, statues adoring it, and go through the entranceway.

The gate to the Forbidden City is massive and certainly an attraction in itself. The architectural design is amazing and detailed and certainly worth pausing to take in, as long as you don't get caught up in the crowd moving through it.

It would be difficult to miss it since you will more than likely enter the Forbidden City by this gate.
You will come from Tienanmen Square which is not less impressive and not less a must see in Beijing.
It will then lead you to the Gate of Great Harmony.
These are all amazing places, and especially the Forbidden City as magnificent examples of Chinese architecture
The huge picture of Mao Tse Tong above the gate is not less impressive.
Be ready for huge crowds...No western tourists though, almost all of them Chinese, walking silently, in order, almost discipline...this too is impressive...
But be also ready for some pushing...
Been there and been pushed a lot...
I have attached, as I always do, some pictures to give you a better feel of this place...
It is hard to imagine you visiting Beijing and missing the Forbidden City as the number 1 attraction...It is more than worth it.

I guess most people visit Tiananmen Square are also on their way to the Forbidden City, both can be done together in a morning or afternoon but on different fee to be paid. Chinese citizens from around the country and tourists descend on Tiananmen to take their photos in front of the portrait of Chairman Mao. Is annoying on crowded days because security checks your bag and it take some time. But it is a must if you're "GO" in Beijing. I like the lighting scene of this place during the night.

If you want to start at Tiananmen Square, you should take Metro Line2 to (Qianmen) and walk through TSq (which is not much to see). However, you can get photos from this point of the Gate of Heavenly Peace, which is across the street. TSq is also the location of the flag raising & lowering ceremony (which is extremely crowded & long security lines). You then have to walk thru an underground stairway to cross the street to the GOHP.
As an alternative, You can take metro line 1 to (Tiananmen Dong/East or Tiananmen Xi/West) and you will be on the same side of the street as the GOHP.
Once you go thru the GOHP, you will see the Meridian Gate (South Gate) of the Forbidden City.
This is where you purchase your tickets for the FC. The FC will be closed on every Monday from January 1st, 2014 for maintenance. The FC is also known s the Palace Museum. You must exit the FC from the Gate of Divine Might (North Gate), you cannot enter the FC from this gate.
Once you exit the FC, directly across the street is the main/South entrance to Jingshan Park. You can see a pagoda high on a hill in JS Park. From this pagoda, you will get spectacular photos of the entire FC down below and also a look at the neighboring Behai Park.
If you have the time and energy, you can exit the West gate of Jingshan Park for a short walk to the East gate of Behai Park. Here you can enjoy a nice boat ride and enjoy a little relaxation. You can exit from the North gate of Behai Park and catch metro line 6 at the (Behai North) station to head back to your hotel.
Also on a later date, we took metro line 1 to (Tiamanmen East) and snapped some nice night time photos of the Gate of Heavenly Peace when it was lit up. From there, we had a short walk to Wanfunjing St & the Doughuamen Night Market.
