4 of us booked a tour of the Mutianyu Great Wall. A not too busy location about an hours ride from our hotel. Our van was new, and comfortable, our Guide Susan was very friendly and helpful! This location has a cable car up to the base and saves a lot of walking and makes the place much more enjoyable. You do not having to climb many steps but it will still be a good bit of exercise to explore the wall as it follows the ridge tops and rises and falls rapidly at times. It was a dream of mine to be standing on the top of the Great Wall of China and this place does not disappoint. The views of the wall disappearing in both directions into the distant misty mountains is truly breath taking.

When I purchased this trip through Living Social, it was such a good deal that I was very skeptical. The trip included r/t international airfare from Houston to Beijing, domestic flights to Xi'an and Shanghai, hotel accommodations, some meals and tours. Overall, it's a great deal for the money and I will definitely take another trip trough them. Pros China Tours delivered on everything promised. The hotels in Beijing and Shanghai were extremely modern and nice. The Xi'an hotel was older, but still very comfortable. A full buffet breakfast with delicious Chinese and American foods was included for all hotels. The tours were mostly well planned with excellent tour guides. Cons At least 1hour of the tour each day was spent at a "factory" to show how things are made. The first day there was a Jade factory, the next a Pearl factory, then a Silk factory and even a Herbal factory. There would be a brief "infomercial" about the product, then you were led to a large showroom where many salespeople eagerly awaited to sell you product. The Herbal facility even had "doctors" give you an instant diagnosis and recommended expensive herbal products to treat your ailments. None of it was a "hard sell" (salespeople were not pushy) but you were a captive audience until the tour bus left. The Shanghai leg of the trip was the least planned and not executed as well as the other two cities. Recommendations The best shopping and best prices are in Shanghai, the last leg of the trip. Save most of your shopping until then. Don't take any offered tours in Shanghai that are not included in the package. They're not worth the cost. You're better off going out on your own. Evening meals are not included. Before you travel, research restaurants around the hotel where you'll be staying. This will save a lot of time wandering the streets looking for the right restaurant. There are 1700 stair steps up a mountain side to get to the Great Wall "Hero Station", station 13. Get in shape prior to going if you want to successfully make the trek.

We booked an all day group tour with this tour company for $40 per person which included lunch. We paid cash (U.S. dollars) on the day of the tour. We toured Tianemmen Sq., the Forbidden City, & Mutainyu Great Wall. Even though it was a group tour there was only my husband and me and one other person on this tour. We enjoyed the day even though it rained a little on us every now and then. Because of that it cleared the air and we were able to see a great distance at the wall.

I visited China on business and only had one day to explore Beijing on my own. I usually try to do things on my own when I'm traveling, but I decided that since I don't know Chinese and it was my first day there, it would be a lot more comfortable to arrange a tour. I spoke with Della, a Tour Operator, and she was beyond helpful arranging a one-day itinerary that fit in everything I wanted to see. In the morning, Lina met me at my hotel and we walked to the Forbidden City where she gave me an in-depth tour. She was so knowledgeable and made the tour really interesting! The company also set me up on the group bus tour to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. The bus tour guide, Alice, was very knowledgeable about the Great Wall. I enjoyed the tour because it didn't involve any of the forced shopping trips that a lot of other bus tours include. We spent three hours exploring the wall on our own, and it was nice to go with a group because it was easy to meet other travelers to walk around with. We left the wall and headed to Olympic Park, which was really nice at night! We stayed there just long enough to take photos of "the birds nest" and "the cube." The bus tour was a total of about 7 hours, from what I remembered. Traffic coming back from the Wall to Beijing was horrendous, which I think is pretty typical for Beijing. The guide, Alice, told us we could easily take the metro home from Olympic Park and that it would be quicker because, in traffic, it would take "2 hours." I decided to take my chances and take the bus home, and it only took 20 minutes to get to my hotel from Olympic Park... In the end, much less of a headache than trying to figure out the metro system when I was crazy jet lagged. Overall, I'd give Lina's tour of Forbidden City 5 stars, and the bus tour 4 stars. There were some things that could have been improved, but it was a great experience overall! A China Tours was very easy to work with; I'd recommend them as a trustworthy tour company.

Dear space_cowgrl, How nice to get your comments on the trip advisor. Thanks very much for your time to evaluate our work, which makes us try to look back what we did for the people, and make our work so rewarding! We are sorry for the Beijing traffic situation, and for ourselves we would like to take subways when the peak time comes. Sometimes if we drive, we really do not know how long will take and it really could be “2 hours”. The traffic nowadays comes here in Beijing anytime, and anywhere without a notice. But we do need to think as a new comer’s way, it would be really difficult for them to point out where to go and where to change the line. Next time if we gave people taking the subway suggestion, we would prepare metro map and basic Chinese + English translation to make the journey a perfect ending : ) Please do accept our best regards from Della, Lina, Alice, and we are welcome you back anytime here in Beijing!
