Morning Mubus Tour to the Mutianyu Great Wall

894 reviews
The Great Wall of China is an ancient fortification, more than 13,000 miles (21,000 kilometers) in length—it’s also China’s top attraction. Parts of the wall are in poor condition or else crowded with visitors. But, on this guided tour, you get to visit the quieter, under-the-radar Mutianyu section, which has also undergone a complete restoration.

This is a very large area that used to a Communist Era Electronics factory built with assistance from the East Germans. As a result you will find German architectural styling in some of the buildings. Parts of the factories bones remain and many buildings have been transformed into art spaces, coffee shops and a few Museums. It is free to go there but some places do charge to enter. If you there for only a few hours like we were you can find lots to see without spending money on admission fees. Sidewalks can be rough due to bricks being used in many places so be careful with your footing. There are also elevated decks you can walk around and get a sense of the large size of the complex as well as views of the Beijing skyline. If you go in the morning don't expect large crowds - many places do not open until 10AM.

The previous reviews are variable, I was really not sure what to expect but we had an afternoon to have some lunch and stroll around this precinct. Take the subway to JiangTai - exit A and walk approx 1km to 798. Once you arrive you can walk along the Main Street area, but there are lots of amazing alleys to stroll along and see exhibitions. Most are free, until January 2017 you can visit the Andy Warhol exhibition, 60CNY, it was worth it to see his early work and as there is so much spade the displays are viewed the way he intended (not cramped) you have plenty of time to view, no pressure and the air quality was good. Enjoy lunch and a drink, we chose outside in the sun, the soup and salad was delicious and the mojitos went down well! We went on Tuesday and felt no usual pressure and bustle that can be experienced in Beijing's public places. We spent 3 hours in the area, Stop and check the street art, there are some great photo opportunities right there.

An eclectic collection of art galleries, shops and reataurants in a former arms factory. Streets lined with sculptures as well as the old steam train used to move the armaments out.
