About
During the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) Keeping the antique porcelain at home was regarded as illegal. So many collectors broke their porcelain and threw them away. Just after the revolution, we began to collect the broken pieces of antique porcelain and tried to bring them to life again. Around 1983-1985, the shard box was created. The Shard Box is not only a collection of antique porcelain, but also a collection of chinese history. Gold & silver handmade fashion jewelry with gem or without in customer design or ours, Repair, Shard box, Antique porcelain, Cloisonne, Gem,Jade & tibetan style jewelry.

Beautiful and Unique.
Oct 2018 • Couples
We recently visited this shop after reading about it on Trip Advisor and the story that goes with the creation of the business, and felt it was a must see while in Beijing. We were welcomed very warmly and given a tour of the shop, shown the photos of political celebs that are displayed- including a past prime minister of NZ (so I had to be photographed by the framed picture being from NZ myself!)
The owner was full of information about the beautiful work displayed, the age of the porcelain and it's origins. We really valued the whole experience and were able to buy some exquisite presents for family. The store was open late in the evening and our tour guide phoned ahead so they knew we were on our way. I would highly recommend people to visit this place- such a cool re-purposing of shattered heirlooms.

Totally unique
Nov 2017 • Couples
Despite being slightly off the beaten track for us and tricky to find it was well worth the trek.

We came away with some amazing gifts made from porcelain that was smashed during the cultural revolution - where else could you get something so unique?

The shop owner was extremely kind and patient sharing his knowledge and love for the boxes and jewellery. It was great value for money and we didn’t feel under any pressure to buy, however we came away with a big bag of treasure! :)

If you want to bring home something that you could only buy in Beijing, make some time to visit the shop. Oh and if you have some broken porcelain, the owner will make it into something for you!

Fantastic store, beware location has moved from address shown
Apr 2017 • Friends
Fantastic shop with some really great and reasonably prices gifts. We originally went to the old address (1 Ritan Bei Road) as it was in a guide book we had, and we called them to find the new store, the owner spoke to our taxi driver to help us get there.

Mr Hu was helpful and patient whilst we spent almost an hour in the store looking at the wonderful gifts and giving advice on how old the pieces were, and where they were from. He told us the story of the store and also gave us a bit of a discount.

Really special family business for Chinese souvenirs a little different from the markets.

Great Store--Location has moved
Mar 2017 • Solo
Great store on truly unique items. The prices may be a bit high relative to local rates, but compared to western stores, I still thought it was a great deal. The old location (1 Ritan Bei Rd) has moved to a new location (No. 2 Jiangtai Rd, Hairun Int'l Shopping Center, #1-12). Finding the new location was tough, but worth the search. I've submitted the new address to TripAdvisor.

A few gifts for Christmas
Dec 2016 • Solo
I am a resident of a suburb in Beijing....Teaching abroad. A colleague recommended this little store called the Shard Box. I decided to get my driver to take me there for a few gifts to take home for Christmas. Absolutely an amazing little place. I highly recommend this for unique and unusual gifts to take home. Apparently most of the items such as jewelry and little boxes are crafted using shards of broken pottery that were broken during the Chinese cultural revolution. What an amazing way to repurpose and reuse beautiful bits of pottery. The gentleman I spoke with was a delight! His English was certainly better than my Chinese.

Had to find this place
Apr 2016
I went out of my way to find this place, having seen it mentioned online in a few places, then reading the Trip Advisor reviews. The owner is really friendly. It was a very hot day and he immediately offered me a bottle of cold water. The prices are quite reasonable, as noted in other reviews. I didn't get a sense that bargaining was necessary or appropriate here, but he offered me a discount (without asking) depending on how much I bought and if I paid cash. Visit Ritan Park if you make it here, it's free and very tranquil, mostly filled with locals.

A very different shopping experience from places like the Pearl Market. No haggling, no pressure, beautifully made items with meaning.

Wonderful place for souvenirs and gifts
Apr 2016 • Business
This is a great spot for unique and beautiful souvenirs from China. Can't beat the story line of rescuing pottery. Nice boxes of all sizes, pendants, rings from the shards plus other jewelry. I got my husband some cuff links. Gives you a 10 percent "discount" so bargaining isn't much (at least I didn't succeed with that) but prices are very reasonable for what you are getting. The owner is very helpful and even hailed a cab for me! I went twice as I didn't get enough the first time and can't wait to present these gifts as I know they will be a hit.

Very nice store and shopping experience!
Apr 2016 • Couples
Great store - owner and wife super nice and not overbearing - my husband bought a great lacquered box with very Chinese ceramic shard. We both love and so glad we made the effort to go there. Recommend highly - prices are good and they put the box into a beautiful cloth lined paper box- foe a safe return home!

Perfect place for unique souvenirs
Nov 2014 • Couples
In Fall 2014 we spent about 36 hours in Beijing before flying to Changchun for a wedding. I had done my research beforehand and knew I wanted to stop at the Shard Box Store. The store can be very difficult to find, as the streets are not always labeled the way they are on a map...if there's a sign at all. The directions we had weren't exactly correct, but if you're having trouble finding it, you can use shopping centres as landmarks. You can use transit to get there. Just take Line 6 (you can easily transfer from Line 2, the main loop) to Dongdaqiao Station. Then go south on Dongdaqiao Road. The Shard Box Store is on the Western side of Dongdaqiao Road, South of Parkview Green Shopping Centre (which has sculptures outside so you'll definitely notice it) and North of the Place shopping centre (which is on the opposite side of the road).
The store itself is somewhat dark and dingy, and everything is covered in a layer of haze from cigarette smoke, but you'll find the absolute best souvenirs in the city. They have such a variety of shard boxes that you can easily find something in your price range. The best part of buying souvenirs here is that every single item is one-of-a-kind and has an excellent story behind it. Each box comes with a slip of paper explaining the history of shard boxes. We were in a major rush as we had to get to the airport in a few hours, but we did have a few minutes to look around. The man running the shop was very helpful and held a tray for the boxes I wanted to buy. I bought six shard boxes, and he gave me a discount for paying with cash. If you have someone with you who speaks Mandarin you could probably negotiate an even better price.
I wish I had had time to look at the jewelry and buy myself a necklace or something. Next time I will certainly go back and spend more time there!
