China Delight with Yangtze Cruise

We travelled to Shanghai to start our 18 day tour to be greeted by our first of many guides, Michael. There was a great bunch of people from Australia and we thoroughly enjoyed the Optionals organised. Some people did not realise that these were to be paid for separately - especially that the tour bus could not return them to the Hotel before drop off - so if you didn't want to go - the only option was to stay aboard the bus. However, the Shanghai River Night Cruise and West Lake Show in Hangou should not be missed by anyone - I would have flown over just for these spectacular shows. As this was a very affordable (cheap) tour the mandatory shopping was obvious, however we did enjoy the pearl, jade, silk, natural herbal medicine and tea plantations without the hard sell. We were also flown to the start of our Yangtze cruise - arriving 20 minutes to midnight to hear the safety talk. Again, the cost of the tour was such that we had terrible flight times, mostly late night. The Cruise was wonderful with our balcony - but I must stress the rest of the tour should have health warnings as it really is only best for the fittest. The optionals on the cruise, Three Gorges, Ghost City etc had many, many stairs. We then went onto the third stage of our holiday, with the Terracotta Warriors (Optional Cost) Great Wall and Forbidden City (approx 4 km walking) and Rickshaw and Family lunch. If you do not believe in tipping, this is not the tour for you, as stated on all well set out literature sent out by China Travel this is not included and needs to be paid. Maybe use another word than tipping -( could be service charge to have less confusion)

21 intrepid travellers booked the China Splendid Tour through China Bestours in Australia. The Ground Operator in China was China Travel Service Head Office ( Beijing). We were treated like royalty and were afforded 5 star treatment where-ever we went.Our National Guide in China was Mr Michael Du and I cannot compliment him highly enough for his services. Our fare included 1 international flight and 4 internal flights plus a 4 night cruise on the MV Century Sun and all bus transport within China. All meals were included plus a drink with every meal.Two shows were also included. I have no idea of how they did it for the price!.
We were shown some amazing sights around Beijing including Tiananmen Square, The Temple of Heaven,The Great Wall, the Forbidden City and The Summer Palace. Then, on to the Three Gorges and the sights of the Yangtze aboard our cruise ship. We saw Pandas, the Terracotta Warriors, the amazing Li River Cruise and the beautiful terrace rice fields of Longji.We also saw ,as part of the highlights,Hangzhou and Suzhou.A visit to the memorable water town of Tongli was also included. The trip finished with 3 nights in Shangai before our flight home.

Just came back from the tour of a lifetime. I cannot tell you what a fantastic tour this was. The itinerary was fast paced and we walked a lot. There were 18 open-minded explorers on this tour, and part of the reason that is was so great was this group of people. The best things were the tour guides: friendly, positive, funny and kind AND open(!) We learned so much about the history and culture. Hotels and breakfasts were unparalleled- and I have travelled the world! We visited four cities, climbed to thirteen tours of the great wall, feasted in many places including a chinese fighter cricket trainer's home. The tour guides fostered the health of the group and tweeked the itinerary. Tour guide Peter we are waiting for you in America- you made us laugh so much and you are an an amazing ambassador for China. You will not be "standard size" when you get to America but you have friends all over excited to get you from the airport/s and treat you to a wonderful time. Thank you China Travel Service- very professional in every respect. Trip would suit anyone active and ready for adventure: friends, young couples, middle aged couples. PS I have always resisted doing an organized tour, but I saw so much (in so little time) for probably a quarter of the price than if I had done this alone.

One day tour to Great Wall (didn't happened)

I booked one day trip to Great Wall with Customer Service Manager - Blake. We agreed on price and on the following day we were picked up from the hotel in the morning. On the way the guide told that there was accident on the highway so we are going to visit silk factory first and then continue. We agreed but when we didn't buy anything in the factory the guide suddenly told us that the cost to go the Great Wall would be almost double what we agreed, but for the price she can take us to some other two factories instead!!! We said that we didn't care about factories - our main objective was Great Wall, so after a bit of haggling we agreed on the higher price (transport, admission fees, highway fees) - but we said we can pay part now, and rest at the end - but she insisted on getting paid in full upfront, which we declined.
So we were taken back to hotel, losing 3 hours of our time and being quite upset.
AVOID!!!

Take advantage of using their program - we found them through Living Social - got SOOOOO much for the money.
Flight from LA, NY or Houston to Beijing.

They give you great information but don't forget
Toilet Paper!!!
Masks for air pollution - can get them at Home Depot at a minimum
Room in your bags for stuff - and Negotiate - walk away - they normally will chance you down

Warning
Lots of "forced shopping time" guides get a commission so be aware - use them to get even better pricing - but the bazaars often get as good as or better pricing.
Avoid the TCM - traditional Chinese Medicine hard sell - take their info sheets and learn but WAY over priced.

Over priced!

My wife and I had booked a trip to visit Guilian and we gave China Travel Service in Hong Kong what we want to see and they made up a travel itinerary. When we arrived at the airport in Guilin, we got picked up by our guild and a van. The van was sort of old and they took us to a hotel close to where we were staying for lunch. We then found out that the food was quite bad, we then notified our guild that we wanted to eat our own meals since the restaurants that they picked out for us is very mediocre. They agreed to refund part of our money but it was not very much. We were then driven to our hotel Sheraton which is supposed to be a 5 star hotel and it is actually more liked a 3 star. One of the worst things is that we ended up having two many short days since the agency has stretched our trip to at least one too many days so they can make more money. Our guild was decent but on the last day, she talked us into visiting and have a "experience" cooking and eating at a farmer's house. They turned out to be a disaster, the farmers charged us a ridiculous rate for this "experience" and worst of all, my wife got food poisoning from it. Overall, we feel that for the high price that we were paying, we were actually being ripped off! We will never travel this way again, the best way to travel is to book our own air and hotel and find a local guild and driver.

97 % percent commission on a train ticket and need to wait 3 days

Do not use China Tavel Services in Hong Kong to purchase train tickets for Mainland China!!! Go online and use Ctrip that has a good english website. I purchased tickets from China Travel Services on Beijing Road and Nathan Road in Kowloon and they charged me 93% commission. Yes thats right - 93% commission and I had to wait 3 days to get the tickets.

I have recently returned from a 12 day visit to China on a tour organised by China Travel Sydney. This was a whirlwind tour of the sights of China I wanted to see (Terracotta Warriors, Great Wall, Tianamen Square, Forbidden City and Shanghai). The guides on the tour were terrific and the drivers excellent. The accommodation was promised as 4 star but this was clearly rated by a person with little attention to detail. However the accommodation was comfortable.
My complaint of China Travel is two fold. The accommodation organised in Beijing and Shanghai was an hour's drive from the centre of the city. We felt trapped in this accommodation and unable to explore in our own time. The optional tours on offer were a thinly veiled exercise in coercion. For instance I did not wish to take the optional tour of the Kung Fu Show but had to hang around the bus while those who chose to go to the show could attend. Without the added expense of a taxi ride to our accommodation located an hour away then I was trapped to wait until this optional tour was completed. This happened on several occasions. One couple was informed that they would need to pay extra for not buying the optional tour as the tour subsidised their accommodation.
However the most self gratuitous ploy of China Travel Service was to demand an extra $110US per person at the end of the trip for tips. However each traveller had been tipping the guides and drivers throughout the trip. China Travel did not accept this and informed the travellers (via the guides) that if we did not pay this extra $110US that our return flights to Australia would be cancelled. The guide also informed us travellers that if we did not pay, China Travel would force him to pay this ($110US x 18 people) from his own salary. This was a blatant exercise in bullying which generated 'bad feeling' on the trip.
When China Travel in Sydney was contacted to assist with this issue they deflected answering the question and offered no support at all.
I would recommend you do not use China Travel for your organised tour to China. There are plenty of great tour operators out there to choose from.

Very efficient and friendly service

Were picked up at the Beijing Airport by a guide and driver and taken to our hotel in the middle of Beijing. We were given an itinerary for our stay and told we could make any alterations that we wished. Had 4 days sight seeing before being taken to the airport to fly to Chengdu. The guide assisted us with the check-in procedure and after a 3 hour flight were met at Chengdu by another guide and driver. Once again were given an itinerary and other options to consider. Guide spoke excellent English and very helpful. Taken to the airport on the third day and assisted with checking in for Shanghai. Met at airport by guide and driver and taken to hotel. Guide discussed what we would like to see as we had been to Shanghai before. Enjoyed stay in Shanghai and assisted at airport for flight to Hong Kong. All guides and drivers were very helpful and friendly and would not hesitate to recommend the Company to other travellers. Only down side was that in China tipping is the norm now and this involved tipping both guide and driver in US dollars which was a reasonable amount. This was an unexpected extra cost but did not spoil a most enjoyable trip.

We booked just traintickets through China Trave Service, but they arranged everything so good and answered us several times all our questions. The traintickets were sended to our hotel. They were already there, when we came to China.
