Youngsters from all over China audition to attend this prestigious school, and naturally, only the best prospects are accepted. They spend half a day on academics, and the other half preparing for careers on stage. With Chinese opera, this means developing skills in mime, acrobatics, music, acting, singing, dancing, reciting, and martial arts - it's very vigorous plus students have to have the right "look". I visited with a tour group and got to see the semester final performances in full costume - students were very impressive. For those who "flunk out", it must be a devastating judgement. We also watched acrobatic lessons, with boys and girls in separate classes. I don't think you can go visit on your own, but if you can arrange a visit with a tour group, it's well worth your while.…
