Fully Restored Beautifully Carved Ceiling
Aug 2018 • Solo
It’s located in the restored Ming Dynasty temple. As it was in the middle of summer, it was very hot in the courtyard as well as in the exhibition halls. The exhibition included highly specific details on ancient construction techniques, materials and various styles of architecture. It reminded me of the exhibition which I saw in the East Annex Hall of Temple of Heaven last year. So we hurried to look for Tai Sui (Jupiter) Hall, in order to admire the beautifully restored carving on the round ceiling. There was no English sign to indicate the name of each hall except the central Chinese sign hang over the entrance. Fortunately, as my Chinese guide could read the Chinese sign 大歳殿, we went in and saw the ceiling, which was absolutely beautiful!

Probably one of the least crowded museums in Beijing
Jul 2017 • Solo
Relatively small, yet comprehensive museum on traditional Chinese architecture in a peaceful environment. Some of the signs were only partially translated to English but they do have quite a few models and photos on display (including a big 1:1000 scale model of Beijing in 1949).

I think that ~1 hour here should be enough time for most people. Admission was 15 rmb (8 rmb for students).

An undervalued gem
Sep 2016
This museum was pretty much bereft of visitors when we went, which is pretty unusual in Beijing! Situated in a somewhat hard to reach former temple, it tells the story of chinese architecture, both domestic and public. Lots of scale models, and as an added bonus, a quite astonishing ceiling in the main building. Worth seeking out.

museum set in the temple of agriculture
May 2016 • Solo
The nearest metro station is 2 km (25 min) walk. All the exhibit rooms are beautifully arranged and displayed with minimal English signs. The museum focuses on Chinese architecture through different dynastic periods and cultural influences. Most of the displays are photos of existing buildings. There are scale models, a display of craftsmen tools, and raw material like lumber and tile. Otherwise, it's mostly a pictorial exhibit.

The museum is set in the former Temple of Agriculture. This is a unique experience. Not only can you view the museum, but there are exhibits on the former temple.

On Wednesdays, the first 200 visitors are free. Otherwise 15 RMB for adults.a

Worth visiting....
Apr 2016
....if you are interested in historic architecture. I went on a Sunday morning and had the place almost completely to myself. This was the opposite of most of the other historic sites you'll see in Beijing, which are packed with mostly Chinese tourists. It was very peaceful and I took the time to look at all the displays and artifacts, even though only the titles were in English. A very peaceful place. I suspect the location would be a deterrent for many, but it was close to our hotel and close to the Temple of Heaven park. I spent around 90 minutes here, and that was taking my time.

Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum (Xiannongtan)
Jul 2015 • Solo
This museum is located in a temple, one of Beijing's ancient Ming altars. The main temple buildings hold an impressive number of artifacts and architecture. This is a great introduction to the sights you will see around China, or recap the sights you have seen. Good for rainy days. There is a nice park near the museum or the Natural History Museum.

There are great models of Beijing, temples and original stone graves, tablets and more here.

Another 'if you have time' location
The 'Altar of Grain and Earth' gets a mixed review from me. I enjoyed my time there but I am aware that many would not. The temple itself is an interesting contrast to it's neighbor 'The Temple of Heaven' both in the fact that the buildings here are all rectangular in formation and that this temple is quiet. The museum is....ok. It has some very interesting replicas of Chinese architecture from around the country including the architecture of some minority groups. There are also some very informative drawings of the evolution of the pagoda in China and diagrams on roof design. However there is a lack of interesting English captions and some of the buildings are very poorly lit. If you're really into architecture or just have nothing to do after you visit the Temple of Heaven it's worth a short walk. The entrance fee is minimal, I remember it being less than 30 RMB.
