Easy Great Wall
Last year while working in Beijing, I visited several undeveloped sections of the great wall which I felt far surpassed the high tourist areas. On occasions when I had visitors from home I hired private tour guide Peter Zhao iampeter518@foxmail.com to take us to different sections of the wall. Near Huairou not far to the north of the city, Hefangkou (River Fort Pass) was perfect when my parents came to visit, with just a gentle slope, enough renovations to make it safe, and easy access from the carpark. My favourite spot was Huanghuacheng (Yellow Flower City). Though very steep, it is well worth the short climb for the stunning 360 degree panorama at sunset. Combined with a visit to the ancient and secluded Pagoda Forest and followed by brilliant bbq fish at a local restaurant, this kind of tour with a small group is cheaper than the average bus tours. We were able to make the most of the time together, enjoying The Great Wall without rush and without crowds. A unique experience of real China!

Going to see and climb the Great Wall was one of the most important parts of my trip to China and so i had to research where I went. I was aware of numerous places to visit and finally settled on Huanghuacheng.
I was not disappointed...
To begin with I think I saw about 20 maybe 30 other people. Which over the trek meant I was basically alone!! I had been so worried about it being heaving so this was perfect.
The wall itself is very challenging so bring decent walking shoes. Some parts are extremely steep with little to hold on to. Even the steps are very difficult and steep. Some parts of the wall have been repaired more than others which on the whole give it a more ‘authentic’ feel.
It’s split into 2 parts where the damn is situated which gives some lovely views with the lake behind. You have to do both sections. It’s a must.
One section you pay ¥5 through a vineyard. Then the other way you pay about ¥15 to go over the damn and through a gate - these are all completely unofficial but about £2 for such an experience isn’t a problem.
Once over the damn you have a little climb before going up a ladder through a window to get onto the wall. For this section I was completely alone and probably gave better views.
In whole it was a magical experience and something I’ll never forget. No crowds gave me plenty of opportunities to just relax and take in the views (and photo ops) and stop for lunch in peace. I even had clear blue skies which made it all the more special.

The wall is a must see! This location has the option to walk up yourself to see the wall, use a gondola or use a ski lift. Your options to come down are to either hike down or take a toboggan ride down. There was a lot of walking, stairs and uphill climbs before you even get to the wall (even taking the ski lift and toboggan). The parts of the wall that we explored were steep and had a lot of stairs and required a ladder to get down at one section. Definitely not handicapped accessible in any way. I believe this location offers the most towers to see.

This is truly one of the best reasons to visit China. This is not to be missed. We took the ski lift up ( and down) instead of the steps. You will hike up plenty of steps on the wall so safe your energy for that. There are steep steps and many are not even. Take your time. You can hike up and down the wall for as much time as you wish. The views are truly stunning. You can take a toboggan down in some places if you wish. They looked rather worn. It is hard to imagine how this wall seems to go on forever and how high it actually is. Truly a wonder.
