This is an easy trip because it is a 30 min drive from Beijing, and worthwhile because the views are incredible. You go up very irregular steps, but it is fantastic, as you climb from one watchtower to the next, you realize how it must have been having patrols and observing as people came from all around. It is a steep climb, but you can make it all the way to the last watchtower in 1 or 1.5 h, if you take your time and stop. there are some gifts shops at the bottom, and on the way. Lots of people, but it gets less crowded as you get near the top because not everyone is up for the whole climb.

What a great trip! Arrangements all made through Gate 1 Travel left nothing for us but enjoyment. A 10 day trip including Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai with all the sights and most of the meals. Very professional guides giving all the information required or requested. Meals at local restaurants for an authentic taste of China. Have traveled worldwide and have not been more pleased with any Travel Agent to this extent. We could not have made these arrangements on our own for any where near the price. Would highly recommend Gate 1 for your next vacation.

We had 2 options to climb the wall:
1. Steep and narrow
2. Easier route.
We took the easier route which was still difficult since the steps are uneven and if you are not near a handrail can be hard to keep your balance. I luckily had brought a walking stick which was very helpful.
The climb was very windy and cold. We were glad that we had worn light down jackets, a hat and gloves.
The view is spectacular.
A must do while in Beijing.

You have several options of what section to climb on the wall. From Beijing you can take the train or taxi to the area you prefer. Read up on the various areas and choose the one right for you. This Badaling Hills area has the most people but it is one of the best preserved. If taking a taxi ask the driver to slow down as you approach the wall and you can get a great picture of the wall winding up the hill.

We had a great time and many photo opportunities at the Changping area of the Great Wall. It is not as touristy as many of the other Great Wall sites, and goin early in the morning allows for great light and secluded pictures without the crowds. It was a fantastic outing overall!

Sure this is seen from space and everyone knows about the Great Wall of China, it WAS the Great Wall of China for security, however now there is very little to do except walk and acknowledge where you are! Moreover going here in the fog means you can't see far at all! The best part of this experience was going on a toboggan ride down the wall, that was a thrilling fast ride!

You can not visit Beijing and not experience the Great Wall of China, what can I say lots of steps lots of people but it is just a magical experience. You can take the cable car to the top which gives you great views for miles, then you can walk down to the next village or walk a little then come back on the cable car.

This section of The Great Wall of China is southwest of Changping.
Reason for its popularity would be it offers 2 options to climb the wall.
You can chose to climb the hard or harder section of the wall.
We chose the hard, which for me at 50+ was manageable, I made it to the 3rd watchtower.
My husband and daughter went on to the top.
As with all these old steps they put a excessively high step in amongst the others (every 10th row or so), thankfully there are hand rails to pull yourself up from time to time.
We also traveled with GATE 1 TRAVEL in our tour of China. Highly recommend this section of the wall and Gate 1 Travel tour.

What can I say- it is a must see attraction if you come to Beijing. You see it in books or on Tv but you have to see it close up to appreciate the scale of this wall. From the car park you can tackle the steps up to the top of the hill , and there are so many steps or wander along the flatter part of the wall. Which ever you choose is determined by your level of fitness. Wear good fitted foot wear. Steps are all different heights ( I'm short so large steps were hard to tackle. I marvelled at the scale of work that has gone into this wall. The blocks of stone had to be carted up the hill with no modern day vehicles, just man power. The wall at this spot is serviced by toilets, coffee shops and souvenir shops. The Great Wall Juyongguan in the Changping region is about an hours drive southwards out of the Beijing CBD.
