This food street is real authentic Beijing cuisine. For those of you who want to experience real Beijing cuisine, this is your desination. Jiao zi, bao zi, Peking duck, and dragon noodles are all here waiting for you and more. I've been once and really enjoyed it. Here you will see local families out to eat together, older Beijingers who have been doing this for decades, young people who are out enjoying the city, and some tourists who have heard about Lao Beijing Jie. As such, you can see Beijing and China as it really is, not some Chinese-style Disneyland version. However, if you go, be prepared! There's not a lot of English spoken here; some, but not alot. There is also not alot of western food in this area. Be prepared to eat what the locals eat - the pork bao zi and the noodles are delicious! Be open to a different way of doing things. For example, you may need to use chopsticks rather than a fork. Also, you may need to pay for your meal first at a cashier and then receive a card or a ticket in return and later present your ticket or card to receive your food. There's shopping here also for those who are so inclined.

The Old Beijing Food Street is a short (10 minute?) walk from the Mao Mausoleum end of Tiananmen. I didn't take the subway there but it's probably very close to the Qianmen subway stop. If you have never taken the Beiijing subway - never fear! It's cheap and convenient. Only 2 yuan for a ticket and there are many subway lines which can take you almost anywhere in Beijing. Get a map and follow the signs. I found the Beijing subway to be easy to navigate and the best way (besides walking or a bike) to get around the city.

After a disappointing roof at drinks at the emperor hotel we wandered these street and had a ball. A really must try is the Chicken with red bean rice and chili oil - it is delicious. we enjoyed people watching trying foods. OK this place has been done up but it dosen't take away from the sights, sounds and smells. Only thing they are missing is an alfresco bar where you can sit and watch the people o by. Still is a must visit.

Some serious, some prank food. Go and see the variety.

Skewered scorpions while they are alive is a sight. Still moving on the skewer. Neat.

Have a ball browsing your way thru this large food market area, packed with stalls and shops. Hundreds of edibles you've never heard of, much less seen, all very colorfully displayed. Markets like this are very busy and popular with locals, as prices are less than half what they are in supermarkets, plus everything is totally fresh. Vendors don't seem to mind you gawking at their goods, as long as you don't block the way for real customers. I tried a "1000 year old egg", which despite its disgusting appearance actually tasted pretty much like a "normal" soft-boiled egg. . .
