I was fortunate enough to do the three day trek with this company. I was “the group” and as the solo trekker I had lots of great attention and care for safety given some rainy weather. The hike in non restored sections was breathtaking and even the restored portion was no piece of cake in spots. My guide Woody was informative and had a good sense of humour. The Great Wall Inn where I spent a couple of nights had one of the most comfortable beds I have have found in my 4 years living in China. The owners were kind and generous and the food was amazing. So grateful I had this experience and with all the research in options to select for this experience I definitely picked the right company. Thanks to Gary the boss, Woody the guide, and Jason the safe driver for making this once in a lifetime trek so memorable!

As part of a 5 week trip across Asia my four friends and I decided we wanted to explore the Great Wall. I found Great Wall Hiking here on tripadvisor and we selected the Jainkou to Mutianyu route. The reviews were precisely on point!

Our amazing guide Peter met us at the hotel and we boarded a nicely equipped van for our drive to the Great Wall. As soon as we entered the van we were handed water bottles. Peter provided us with detailed maps and explanations of the history of Beijing and the wall. He had obviously pre-prepared the maps with markings to show where the wall was, when certain Mongolian attacks happened and in what years. Each of the 5 of us were given our own map. Peter had the answers to all of our questions throughout the drive and during the day, even questions that had nothing to do with the Great Wall.

We drove through a small town and were dropped off at what looked like a random side street. We were given two more water bottles, a bottle of juice and some snacks and Peter led us up a dirt path behind a building that had no markings to indicate that it was a path toward the wall. As we climbed Peter stopped us a the perfect lookout points.

Once on the wall Peter provided great detail of the history of how it was built, how and when attacks on it took place and how it was defended. Peter even pointed out that different armies had different signatures in how they constructed the wall.

As we reached the top of the wall Peter provided us with a round of beers and some more snacks. Throughout the trip Peter used his camera to take over 100 amazing pictures of us which he provided to us on a flash drive at the end of the tour.

The restaurant after the tour was also fantastic!

Overall, having been on many tours in many countries Peter was far and away the best guide I have ever had and Great Wall Hiking was one of the best organized tours I have been on.

I highly recommend it.

Basically it's a private tour of the Great Wall where we were picked up at our hotel by our driver and our personal guide (Cheney). The driver dropped us off at this remote, ruined section of the Wall and we walked through (with our guide) to the established (tourist) section and then after a gondola ride we me our driver at the bottom and he drove us back to the hotel. It was a truly magical experience and some of the views were amongst the best I have ever experienced. You got to see so much of the Wall and so much variety and in many places you had it all to yourself. It took a bit of effort, especially the kilometre or so at the beginning where you trekked up through the jungle to a watchtower on the wall - but it was only about 8kms it total. And you could add a little more in places if that's what you wanted.

My daughter (15) and I did a one day hike in cold but very clear weather with guide Peter Cao. We are well travelled and have done a number of hikes in various parts of the world, but this stands out as our most memorable experience. Easy booking procedures through the Beijing office, and a really excellent guide. We were provided with pre-reading material on the journey to the Wall, and a wonderful set of photographs on a memory stick afterwards. Peter knows his subject and provided background and information throughout the hike.Again, an unforgettable experience, well organised and of course the Wall is breathtaking.

My husband and I took a 3 day hike with Great Wall Hiking. The hike was outstanding and the 3 days allowed us many different views of the different sections of the Wall.

The hikes were at times strenuous but you can go at your own pace and rest as needed. However the views were well worth the effort. Each night we stayed in a farmers guesthouse which was extremely comfortable with heating, wifi and warm showers. The owners cooked us delicious breakfasts and dinners and there was more than enough food for us all. We awoke early each day and were rewarded with a lovely sunrise atop the wall and many moments when we had the Wall to ourselves. On the final day we didn't even see another tourist on the Wall. At the end of the second day we had a few hours free time in the village which was a nice time to relax and explore the small village in which we were staying.

Our guide Peter was excellent and well organised. He was very knowledgable about The Wall & China and constantly shared his knowledge with us. He was happy to answer all our questions about The Wall and China and we enjoyed great conversations with him over dinner each night. Peter also took many photos of us on the Wall and shared them with us on a USB which was an unexpected bonus!

Our driver was very safe, friendly and helpful. The whole trip was very well organised and we would recommend anyone coming to China to use this company for any length trip to The Great Wall.

I booked this hike based on TripAdvisor reviews, and I could not be happier with the experience. I did this hike as a solo woman, and felt comfortable and safe the entire time. My guide, Yaxin, was fantastic. He was knowledgeable and allowed me to hike at my own pace. Don't be fooled like I was, this is a real hike, wear good hiking shoes and clothes! Water and snacks were provided. The driver was wonderful and safe, and the car was comfortable and spotless. But the best part, Yaxin took photos of me along the way and then emailed them all to me! After we finished at the wall, we had a delicious lunch. There were no hidden agendas or costs. It was the highlight of my two week tour to China, it was worth every cent and I can only hope you also choose this company to get the best possible experience of the Great Wall!

We spent ten wonderful days in China with two of our nearly adult children, and hands down consensus was that this was the best day of all. I think it was one of the most magical days of my life. I chose Great Wall Hiking based on their reviews and comprehensive website which outlines the demands of each hike and what to expect. We chose the Jiankou to Mutianyu hike, and Peter was our guide. He spent much of the drive from Beijing showing us maps where he had outlined the history and geography of the Wall and talking to us about it. He was extremely knowledgeable and able to answer all our questions.
The hike itself was challenging, which was exactly what we wanted. We were able to see both unrestored and restored sections of the Wall and were fortunate enough to have a very clear day where we could see for miles. Peter also took photographs throughout the hike (as did I) and presented us with an edited flash drive of the photos on the way home to our hotel which was delightful and unexpected. For those who don't want to carry a heavy camera, Peter will document everything! He also carried extra water and food as well.
If we return in the future I will definitely book another Great Wall hike with Great Wall Hiking - I could not have asked for more!

We did the one day small group hike, Simatai West to Jinshanling section with Great Wall Hiking. They promise a maximum of 8 people but our group was only 4. Our guide, Peter, was very knowledgeable, spoke excellent English and was really nice. During the drive to the starting point he told us the history and gave us each a map which he had annotated with the history of the wall. He is a professional photographer and took great pictures during our hike and gave us each a USB drive with all the pictures before we parted for the day. He also carried a massive pack with enough water, soft drinks and snacks to feed an army.

It was March 31 and we saw maybe 2 dozen other people in 4 hours of hiking. "Hiking" the Great Wall really means "going up and down a gazillion stairs, some really steep"! It was a workout for the knees. (They offer you a hiking pole to borrow - unless you are young and athletic, take it!) When we got to the planned terminus we were all so disappointed that it was over that Peter extended the hike for us.

The Great Wall is beautiful, amazing, impressive, a bit magical. Our hostel offered a trip that just included transportation (no guide) for a lot less money, but we were glad that we went with Great Wall instead. A knowledgeable guide really added to the experience. We are budget travelers so this was a splurge but was well worth it.

We also were glad that we opted for this hike which starts on an unrestored section of the wall and ends on a restored section, so you get to see both. Because it is further from Beijing you leave a lot of the crowds behind which really enhances the experience. We have many pictures of great stretches of the Wall with nary a person in sight.

Everything worked like clockwork on our two-day excursion. The van and our guide, Robert, picked us up right on time at our hotel to start our trip. We wanted to see the less touristy parts of the Great Wall and sleep overnight on the Wall. We started at a very rustic and low-profile entry point and hiked the Jinshanling section of the Wall (about 120 kilometers from Beijing). The scenery and experience rival anything I have ever seen, and we only saw 6 tourists during the entire trip. Fiona was great on making arrangements over the internet and everything occurred just as promised. Robert was a terrific guide who provided just the right balance of info and silence so we could enjoy the experience. Robert speaks excellent English and is very friendly and knowledgeable. We had a spacious van pick us up at the door of our hotel and get us to and from our destination. Our driver, Mr. Tong, was a very responsible fellow. I would highly recommend visiting the Jinshaling section of the Wall (vs. the closer and more touristy spot, Badaling), and would also highly recommend Great Wall Hiking to take you there.

A word of warning about the overnight stay on the Wall. The latrine is a bucket (I knew this going in, and only choice, so not complaining, but be aware of this.) I was not confident that the sleeping bags/pillows had been cleaned (in fact, I am pretty sure they were not). The whole sleeping arrangement did not seem very clean to me, which was disappointing. I can say I slept on the Great Wall, and I don't require luxury, but it was a bit rougher than I expected. This is really my only complaint about the outing. To be safe, I would bring a sleeping bag liner and a cover for the pillow.

Dear Lazyike, thanks for your prompt feedback about our service. We are very happy that you enjoyed the experience with us on the Great Wall thoroughly. As you indicated this 2-day hiking and camping is running on a remote and less-visited sections of the Wall from Gubeikou to Jinshanling and then Simatai West which is our advantage from other operators. We've already noticed the cleaness of the sleeping bags. At the moment our local farmer partner, Mr. Sun provides us with all sleeping bags facilities which are also employed by his other business partners. We will prepare our own sleeping bags, liners and covers for the pillow in 2012. We will also prepare towels for those who would have a shower after the hike on Day 1 in summer time. We are always willing to improve our service standard and offer a comfortable and unforgettable experience on the Great Wall.

Great Wall Hiking did a great job guiding my family on an overnight hike of the Great Wall! Peter was a fantastic guide, and extremely knowledgeable of the area, the wall, and the lore surrounding it.

Our tour included a stop at the Olympic park, which was very nice. The Birds Nest, and the Water Cube were both a site to see!

Our hike on the wall was challenging, and rewarding. It was probably the only place in China where we did NOT feel overwhelmed with people. In our 8-10 miles of trekking on the wall and the neighboring country side, we saw only two people. How pleasant!

Our overnight stay was a memorable experience, and the guard tower in which we stayed felt safe and secure. The accommodations on the wall are quite rustic, but that is part of the fun! I would recommend Great Wall Hiking to anyone looking to spend two days on the wall!
