This site is in Huairou District and quite far away from Beijing's city center, but it's worth a visit if you are in the area. I recommend you visit especially if you are in Shunyi or staying in the Yanqi Lake area.
There is a very nice walk leading up to the dam, with some carnival games and small water activities beside the path. Once you get to the dam, there are two different boat trips and we took both which were nice. If you are short on time, I recommend taking the speed boat as it only takes 5-6 minutes and takes you all around the lake. There is also a chairlift which takes you to a viewing point, where you can see parts of the Great Wall. It is not the best place to see the Great Wall in Beijing, but still a decent view nonetheless. On the other side of the lake there are more fun activities like bungee jumping and zip line, but you need to pay separately for each.
Overall, this is a decent site to visit, especially if you are with children. This is also good for large groups as there are many different things to do to satisfy everyone.

Nice place to visit, PWD-friendly. They have a shuttle that brings you to the further part where there is the bungee jump, zipline and the cable car (with view of Great Wall). Then the cable car itself was a blast... a view of the mountains and the water. Don't wear a skirt as it can get windy. lol.
My non-PWD friends chose to hike down and there were muscle pains as an aftermath, but the view and experience made it worth it.

I was pleasantly surprised by Qinglongxia. Our main reason was to go zip lining, but the place offered much more. The views were great and facilities were new and much better than I was expecting from any Chinese amusement establishments. I don't know how to categorize this place because it is part scenic park, part hiking, part amusement park for kids, part resort with overnight lodging. Arrive early. We left Beijing Financial District around 8.15am and arrived around 10.30am on a Sat morning. It wasn't crowded into around noon. I'd recommend getting there around 9.30am if possible. The serenity of the resort is unusual for Beijiing.
We had 8 and 11 yr old girls. They did archery (12 arrows for 20RMB), hamster ball on water (30RMB for 5min, although it wasn't crowded yet so they enjoyed 15min), and zip lining (80RMB for around 30sec). The park also offered bumper cars, bumper boats, paddle boats, etc.
Go early, bring snacks, and enjoy a nice relaxing day.

- reservoir dam with dragon shaped lake
- nice cable car ride to Great Wall towering a few hundred meters above the reservoir. We hiked down which offered some great vistas into the Huairou scenery and mountains. (~ 1 hour)
- daredevils may enjoy bungee jumping, wall climbing, etc.
- good with kids because hikes are easy and lots of things to see
- many local tourists filling up the place (noise)
=> ok for a one time outing but not a great sight to see the Great Wall

Little far from Beijing downtown but close to Yangqi lake, Qinglong Gorge is a very big place (empty mostly, with some man-made mountains and plastic wild life) offering some distraction to the visitors that come every week: Bungee Jump (300 RMB, a little expensive), wall climing (50 RMB), Zip Line (80 RMB), bamboo canoe rental (30 RMB) and small motored boats (50 RMB). Recommended to visit during spring or summer, also we recommended to find a place to eat roasted river fish (烤鱼), its a very popular dish in Huairou.

We were driven to another mountain and waterfall region, called Qinglong Xia. It was pretty hot by then, at 2.00 pm, but we started the walk through some pleasant gardens, until it became a bit more complicated as we crossed some stepping stones across a lake, full of tadpoles, while half of our party took a mountain path alongside us. We caught glimpses of them from time to time, but after half an hour became separated altogether.
We’d been told to make for an electric car stop, higher up the mountain, from where we could be driven to the top, but we kept on walking upwards without being sure if we were going in the right direction. We asked a few people along the way and they seemed to think we were going the right way. We were passed by some other groups and a couple of people asked to have their photographs taken with me, as it was unusual to find a Westerner there and I jokingly replied it would cost them 25 yuan, but they just laughed-not sure if they understood my Chinese.
Finally, we came to a lake, being fed by a pretty waterfall, with a part where you could walk behind it, but we took a few photos and pressed on upwards. Higher up some steps, we arrive sweating and out of breath at a large cave, with 2 electric cars parked inside. Dr Deng went to book tickets for 12 of us and we waited in a Tingzi for the others. Apparently we’d got there ahead of them, I don’t know how, but guess they must have stopped a lot of times to take pictures. It was getting late when they caught up with us, so we took the car down the mountain, instead, back to the car park. It didn’t go all the way, but we were dropped off at a viewpoint, with a fantastic view of the valley below and a large pagoda perched on the opposite mountain, apparently only each by metal steps, zig zagging up the mountain.
It was an enjoyable afternoon, but I feel that if we had this kind of place in the UK, there would be more tea rooms or cafes along the way, rather than just a couple of carts selling cold tea or water.

Do thing the 800+ m cable car ride is the icing on the cake. Great view from the top of the mountain of the river and a rare view of the Great Wall at its original status. Take the time to take in the view from the mountain top as it's still at the natural stage and the long way down in foot is a challenge. Enjoy.

I recommend to combine a trip to this beautiful park with visiting the great wall.
the park is vary nice you have a trip in a boat and some other nice activities and the view is outstanding.
it can get quite cold in this area so take warm clothes.
