Highly recommended

The costumes, performers, and musicians were all top-notch. A teleprompter provides an English translation. The venue is cozy and intimate. I am not an opera fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I would see this over and over!

Peony Pavilion performance
Jul 2013 • Friends
I wanted to see a classic Beijing opera while in Beijing. My local friend suggested this one, as it would be a little easier to follow to my Western ears and experiences. The evening began with a buffet in the Imperial Granary - this wasn't your run-of-the-mill warmed-over steamtable food. This was really good food (the sauteed turbo had lots and lots of bones, tho) with Peking duck served separately at a buffet table. The performance was in the next building. Now. First off, I need to say this type of performance is not for everyone. It is very stylized, in every aspect. The speech is somewhere between singing and speaking. The movement of the story is quite slow (the first 15 minutes involve a princess going to a garden and falling asleep) But if you can open your mind and ears to a very different kind of performance, you will find this to be richly rewarding. Read up on the story, and the history of this type of opera before you go. At the end of the opera you will have the opportunity to have your picture taken with the cast members - a generous and gracious addition, it seems to me.

Beautiful costumes, entertaining

The Peony Pavillion is light Chinese opera. It is a classic love story with English subtitles projected on the back wall and side monitors thus it is easy to follow. The theater itself is charming with limited seating close to the action. You can see the actors facial expressions which really add to the performance . Even the stagehands have intricate costumes . After the performance you have a photo op with the actors. Note: the tickets are printed in Chinese. We were told the performance started at 7:30. We were not told to arrive at 6:30 for the buffet so we missed dinner. Even so, it was a memorable evening worth the price of the ticket. No need to buy the more expensive tickets since all seats are good.

Fabulous performance, much more enjoyable that Peking Opera

Using the old imperial granary for the location of the restaurant and theatre adds to the ambiance of this destination. The food is served buffet style and is good. The performance is in an intimate setting. The musicians are fabulous, the us of the entire space of the theatre adds to the magical feeling. But the most delightful part are the actors, from the 4
"gods" to the handmaiden and the "old nun" you have great support for the fabulous lead actor and actress.
If you have one option to see opera in Beijing make it this one. If you see this and Peking Opera you'll understand the difference.
