It’s been reported on newspaper that the community is going downhill and many artists moved away. We drove there to check it out ourselves. It’s a huge area, spread out with big n small galleries, and many artists studios. Many are locked up and empty. If you don’t have a car to drive up and down the street, it’s quite difficult to find a shop on foot. We found a nice restaurant called Gourmet Lounge. It offers Italian and German cuisine. We had a very relaxing lunch to conclude this trip to Songzhuang.

大部分美術館都是關閉的,我們花了超過三小時的時間來回,就只能夠進入北京當代美術館看一看,實在是費時,不值。 The place is quite far away from the city, however I decided to go there cos I wanted to see the local art. After spending more than 110 min (one-way travel), I found it was just an empty place, many of the museums are closed without no notice at all. I went to the Tree art museum (closed), Pine art museum (moved to a new place), Songzhuang art center (also closed, as there is no current exhibition), and Museum of contemporary art Bejing (luckily it was open). And we have to spend another 110 mins to return to the city. If you want to go there, make sure there is a current exhibition, otherwise it is closed (differ from what the website says, it is open all days) Interestingly, when we reached Songzhuang art center, we tried to go in, a man told us that it was closed, after that, the gate was also closed to stop anyone from reaching the front door.

Actually this is a hidden gem and has for sure developed a lot since I came here first time 5 years ago. This art district is in Tongzhou, just outside Beijing. From my place on the east it is about a 1 hour bike ride to go there and you can find Mobike and Ofos around. This area is a lot bigger than 798 and as there are big distances it is smart to have a bike so that you can see more of the place so I do recommend biking. We mainly bikes around and managed to check out a few galleries that were open. A lot of the artists actually live here in the village so you can see them in their work place directly. The new thing is that now there are so many nice and cozy coffee shops around so there are plenty of places to stop by for a relaxing afternoon tea or coffee. We also enjoyed dinner at a restaurant called Red Persimmon in English. This place came out highly recommended on Dianping, the Chinese version of Yelp. We had some delicious Chinese food here.

We spent 2 hours there scouring the town for art of any kind. Not a single local could tell us where one was. There were a couple pseudo galleries but sadly whatever scene there was left a long time ago. There is no reason to go to Songzhuang. If you want real art go to Caochangdi instead.

I went there yesterday. Quite a huge area and some big (10 stories high or so) buildings called Art Center or Museum but almost every building was almost empty. I'm not sure it's still developing or lot of tenants have already left. Only a few galleries were open. Location is very far (about 50 min. by taxi from 差不多 Beijing. I found some art related schools and selling copy of whatever you order then they can paint for you. I saw some shops were copying the painting from computer screen. Not recommended personally.
