This one it was our second great wall tour, we went to see the sun set. It was amazingly empty, at the end it was only us, unbelievable, we did with the GreatWallmyLove (GMML) company, and they handled perfectly. if I am to come back this will be the place.

We had a great local guide (Rocky Niu) for our hike along the Great Wall at Jinshanling. Our guide, Rocky and driver (Mr Wu) were provided by Tang Dynasty Travel agents. We had a drive of around two hours from Beijing to Jinshanling - best to set off early and avoid public holidays to avoid crowds. The wall at Jinshanling is less busy than some parts because of its distance from Beijing. Our guide suggested the best route and advised us that there are some very steep parts of the wall - he was correct. Fantastic views from this maintained part of the wall. We used the cable car to get to the wall from the visitor centre - you need to be quick getting on and off as it doesn't slow down like a ski lift. We had a tiring but informative hike with our guide who was informative as well as having a good sense of humour.

Following the 28 day Silk Road Explorer Tour with Wendy Wu Tours we had prebooked and additional 2 days in Gubai Water Town with 2 different walks onto teh Jinshanling section of the Great Wall. We were pretty tired at the end of the outstanding Silk Road Tour and we couldn't do the full hikes along this section but our Guide Kevin was very flexible and understanding and on the first afternoon we went along the wall for a few kms. Kevin and the very friendly driver arrived at the very comfortable Gubai Water Town Hotel very early (4am) the next morning for a sunrise trip to the Wall and 'oh my goodness' this was fabulous. The light was perfect and these sections of the wall are just magnificent. Kevin was extremely helpful and accommodating as I took many pictures. The steps are steep in places and eroding away in bits here and there but that just makes this different to the other places we visited on the Silk Road trip. This was really well worth it - this is a better trip than the Juyongguan Pass outside Beijing. Thanks Kevin and Wend Wu for this Silk Road Tour 'add-on'.

The Great Wall at Jinshanling was initially built from 1368 to 1389 in the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), and in 1567 and 1570 rebuilding of the Wall was mainly directed by General Qi Jiguang (1528–1588). The Great Wall at Jinshanling is one of the best preserved parts of the Great Wall with many original features. It got its name because it was built on the Greater and Lesser Jinshan ('Gold Mountain') Ranges. A tablet with the Chinese inscription for 'Jinshanling Great Wall' was set into this section.

We went on a tour arranged by our travel agent and can really recommend seeing the wall at Jinshanling - the reasons being that it was not crowded, nor did we get hassled by locals trying to sell souvenirs or offer help (for a fee!). Jinshanling is about 2 hours from Beijing centre, so an early start is recommended, otherwise you get snarled up in Beijing traffic! We left about 7am and got there just after 9. We left our driver in his car and took a shuttle bus to the ticket area, some 1.2Km ahead. We then had the option of walking to the wall, or taking a cable car. We took the cable car, which took about 15 minutes to get to the top. Our ascent to the wall was relatively easy, with spectacular views of the countryside. Once on the wall, walking is relatively easy because most of it. Is in good condition, but there are a few steep parts which may need some care. We certainly got a real feel for the wall and how it dominated the local geography. It must have been heartbreaking if you were in an invading army, to see a virtually impenetrable wall towering above you and stretching across the horizon! Overall this is probably one of the best places to see the wall, albeit a good trek outside Beijing.
