I thoroughly enjoyed my weekend tour with WildWall. A wonderfully informative and interesting two days, filled with spectacular and challenging hiking and warm hospitality from William and Qi, their sons Jimmy and Tommy, and their black lab Hadrian. The best way I can imagine to experience the Great Wall, accompanied by the absolute expert on the subject. Highly recommended.

I recently organised for a group of 15 of us to join one of William's Wild Wall weekends. We had a delightful weekend, even in spite of the rain! Three or four good walks on and around the Wall, including to see sunrise. Those who were already tired out relaxed with a book and cuppa in the courtyard. The Barracks itself was idyllic - basic, rustic comfort, which was perfect for us. Lovely traditional northern-Chinese bedrooms around a courtyard, with wooden-beamed roofs. William and Jimmy, his son, were brilliant guides - answering any and all questions on the history of China and the Wall. William gave atmospheric commentary, imagining our party back in time as a group of Mongol invaders approaching the Wall through the morning mist - magical! Wu Qi and her team in the kitchen were charming and put on meal after meal of delicious, warming food. Hearty English breakfasts and strong coffee, then big meals of northern Chinese food (think dumplings, stews, soups) for lunch and supper. Just the ticket after a long hard walk. In the evenings we watched documentaries, enjoyed a few glasses of wine and chatted. You won't regret visiting the Lindesays!

We planned our entire tour of China around this Great Wall experience so our expectations were very high and vastly surpassed, it was an outstanding experience and certainly one of our all time global travelling highlights. We travelled with our two teenage daughters from Australia in October and enjoyed every moment. William and Qi provide an exceptionally authentic and educational experience. The hiking was challenging and extremely rewarding. We learned so much about the Wall and history of China we could not learn anywhere else. Planning, organisation, transport, accommodation and food were all excellent. Being the only people on the Wall for the experience was amazing... no tourists, no crowds, just our family, William and his dog Hadrian. We would love to do this again in a winter season to experience the difference. We would highly recommend this to any individual or group who wants the ultimate unique Great Wall experience.

I had heard of William through a friend and so was delighted to meet him and his lovely wife Qi for the weekend. This trip honestly exceeded my expectations which were already high! The Barracks is a wonderful relaxing base where WIlliam, Qi and their two children escape to at the weekends. The hospitality was second to none and Qi is a fabulous hostess and cook. William is a font of knowledge about the wall and China in general and I had the good fortune to watch some of his documentaries whilst I was there. Hadrian (geddit?) the dog was a great addition to my enjoyment of the weekend. I learnt more than I ever expected and relaxed after our early morning walks. This weekend I am sure woiuld greatly surpass any 'touristy' experience found on day trips from Beijing. Do not hesitate to seek this wonderful trip out. Really deserved 6* but that's not an option on Tripadvisor!!!
