My family of 5 had an 8.5 hour layover in Beijing and booked the Private Beijing Layover Tour to Mutianyu Great Wall. The reason for the private tour was that our layover was a little short for a tour with more people who may have a longer layover and we didn't want to stress. We were a little nervous about getting out of the airport with the given instructions, but after following them to the letter, it turned out to be a breeze. One missing step though was that it didn't explicitly say to get your fingerprints taken, but there were helpful people there to guide us. Jenny greeted us and took us out to the waiting car. The drive took a little more than a hour and soon we were there walking along the wall. We had brought some Chinese RMB $$ with us, but hadn't budgeted for the chairlift up and alpine slide down but Jenny bought the tickets for us and we reimbursed her in American $$. Be sure to budget for that, especially if you have teenagers (they loved the alpine slide). Overall, it was a great way to spend a long layover.
