With our guide Garth we visited very peculiar diners in the Beijing hutongs around the Lama temple area. They were hidden gems we would have never found by ourselves, offering authentic and genuine food, which we truly loved! We also listened to Garth’s fascinating tales on the origin and history of some Chinese meals and food culture. From Mongolian invasion to the silk road, from the Ming dynasty to the dairy tradition… ending up in a private house usually hosting crickets’ combats! A delicious way to start our discovery of China marvellous world, a must-do in Beijing!

Great dinner tour. We went to 5 sitdown places and stopped to try a couple of street food options as well. Our guide Garth was very knowledgeable, friendly and also very attentive. We only went to small off the beaten track establishments and all the dishes we tried were typical Beijing specialties. We paid $80 per person which also included all drinks. The booking and communication was all easy and went smoothly including when we needed to change the date of the booking. Overall an excellent experience and I’d highly recommend the tour.

I went to Beijing for work. i am a chef by profession and wanted to explore and know what is the food like in china. before going i booked breakfast tour and dinner tour with Untour beijing food tour. and it was the best decision to book with them. Mr. Garth Wilson was our tour guide and he was a blessing honestly. Such a great guy and was so kind. he told us stories, history and details of each dish we tried and of beijing and of hutong and of china. My God this guy was so good. as much as we loved food we loved him more for the way he was telling us stories and history and he knew the best places. things he made us taste when i tried them from somewhere else they were not as good as the places he selected for us. If you book your tour please ask for GARTH. I think people should make a note to meet GARTH when in beijing as he is equally good as the historical places you want to visit. im back and i actually miss the tours with him.
throughout my stay he was helping with chinese translations and recommending best places to visit. he told me which is the best place to buy tea. he was so kind.
by luck i booked dinner tour with him and i was super happy and excited. dinner tour was another best tour after he gave us breakfast tour. this guys knows the best places and we tasted the best food. please when in beijing you must to breakfast and dinner tours with GARTH. next time im in beijing im going to have these tours again with him.
i would never have found such best places to eat if it was not with GARTH's tours. it was the best decision.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE. I WILL CHERISH THIS MY WHOLE LIFE.

Dear Samira - Thank for taking the time to write such a detailed review! We aim to give visitors an understanding of each dish we try, how it’s made, as well as how it fits into Beijing’s history and culture. We’re really pleased you found that information valuable, and that you enjoyed your experience on the tours so much. We look forward to hearing about all the Beijing-inspired dishes you create at home and to hosting you again next time you’re here!

If you’re planning a trip to Beijing, you should DEFINITELY include a foodtour with UnTour in your plans!!! Our host, Garth was amazing, very warm and welcoming and most importantly, a fantastic guide with an endless resource of information. We bombarded him with questions because we were just so excited about the whole experience and he answered them all with a smile! We absolutely loved the food tour and can’t wait to come back for round 2. What to expect, next to great hospitality, is a lovely wander around town stopping in at hole in the walls that we - even though we are experienced travelers - would’ve never found ourselves. The food options were very varied and our drinking cup was never empty. We 100% recommend this tour, just book it, you will not regret it!

We decided to book a “back alley breakfast tour” the first morning for Beijing trip to get our palette started in a "home" country (we're Chinese) that my kids have never experienced before, being American-born. We met Garth on a cool, brisk spring morning and was surprised that he was actually Australian. We found that he has been in Beijing for over 20 years, speaking fluent Mardarin and was such a local that he knew the shop owners as we jumped from place to place. He transitioned from English to Mandarin to suite both my mother-in-law and wife and me and the kids.

Garth gave us a backstory to every food we tried, knowing when and how the food made its way into the Beijing palette, whether from Muslim influence from the deeper regions of China or from the Mongolian invasion. He even had knowledge about the way the food is named and it’s influence on other regions of China. This backstory to each food was truly the standout element of the tour, letting us appreciate the food with historical background.

Garth was very careful to emphasize that this was a 10 course breakfast and advised us not to eat everything we were served or we won’t be able to try everything. This was such a hard thing to do as everything was so delicious!

A couple of standout points:

1. He paced the bathroom breaks perfectly around the nicer restrooms available in the back alley tour.
2. He knew the background story to the back-alley themselves, how they evolved over time both from China’s growth to the government regulations that tried to rein in the street food culture.
3. He arranged it so we never had to wait at any of the stops. We were able to get our seats and food almost immediately when we arrived.

We really think this food tour set the stage for the rest of our food experience in Beijing, giving us courage to try many new things for the rest of our days, both at high restaurants and at street corners.

Best of all, Garth had suggestions for us after breakfast (to walk off all the food) that led us to explore some of the best local areas of Beijing besides the standard sites we had booked.

Dear Tuck - Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed review! We’re so pleased you chose the Hutong Breakfast Tour as an introduction to Beijing cuisine and that it set the stage for the rest of your food experiences. Giving visitors the confidence to navigate the local food scene is one of our goals, so it’s great to hear we achieved that for your family. Good organization, cultural context and the best available bathroom stops are also very import to us, so we’re glad those contributed to your experience. Thanks again for spending the morning with us and letting us be part of introducing Beijing to your family!

Brilliant tour, highly recommend it. We went on our first night in Beijing and i'm so glad we did. Our tour host Garth was great, very informative and good company.
We were shown how things work out there and what their different ways of eating are etc... which really helped for the remaining duration of our trip. I would suggest doing this on the first day/night of the trip.

oh and the food was great and kept us guessing!

Thank you for your recommendation! We’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the tour and the food. Booking a tour with us at any time during your trip is a great way to explore local food, but we agree with your suggestion visitors book for their first day or night in Beijing as the tours make a great introduction and we have many more recommendations for great restaurants in the capital. Thanks again for joining us!

This tour took us to the hidden gems of Beijing’s Hutong, where we sampled so many of the local snacks and food. Not only was it a thrilling experience for the tastebuds, Garth also took us on a journey of tales and history about each of the foods we sampled. He was knowledgeable, is clearly passionate about the food and the culture, but above all he was sensitive to his customers’ needs (thank you again for those cough lollies).

We ended the experience in a lovely old man’s home, where he cooked us the most delicious dish, showed us his crickets and birds and shared with us snippets of his very colorful life. This element alone made this wonderful food tour so much more than meets the eye. Absolutely the highlight of our trip.

We’re very pleased to hear the Old Beijing Dinner Tour was the highlight of your visit to Beijing. We are indeed passionate about China’s culinary history and culture, and our goal is for our guides to share that passion with guests on every tour. “A thrilling experience for the tastebuds” is how we think about our tours too, and we’re always excited to introduce our favorite foods to visitors. We’d love to host you again for another adventure and offer a discount for returning guests, so please let us know next time you’re visiting!

Our tour with Garth was fantastic! Knowing that there was amazing food to be had in Beijing, but not knowing what or where or how to order it can be frustrating. Garth walked us confidently and rapidly through some of the best food we'd ever eaten, in places we never would have thought to look. We also got amazing descriptions of the history and significance of each dish we had, as well as the neighborhoods they were in.

Dear John - We’re so proud (of Beijing) to hear the dishes you tried on the Old Beijing Dinner Tour are some of the best you’ve ever eaten. They’re some of the best we’ve ever eaten too! Selecting the dishes we include on our tours is a truly delightful job, as is then getting to share them all with visiting foodies like your family. Thanks again for dining with us and for your kind review!

Great way to see Beijing local suburbs and taste the local breakfast food. Garth our guide was great, nice to see a fellow Aussie in Beijing but speaking excellent mandarin. Garth took us to different food stores and explained what they are and the stories behind the food, like the origin of the dim sim which I didn’t know. We love the freshly made warm ‘donkey rolled in dust’ mochi, and the lively lady who made them. Garth also went out of his way to get us some boxes and tape as we needed to send some parcels home. An excellent tour and a great informative guide. A highly recommended tour.

Dear Martin - Thank you for joining us on the Hutong Breakfast Tour! It’s great to hear you enjoyed the dishes you tried and the stories behind each of them. In our opinion, the ‘donkeys rolling in the dust’ and the lady who makes them are actual Beijing treasures, so we’re delighted you loved them too. Please let us know next time you’re in China. We’d love to host you both again on the Old Beijing Dinner Tour or on one of our tours in Shanghai.

Thanks to this tour, I had the pleasure of sampling some of the best foods I've had in Beijing, most of which I could never had found on my own.

Garth was extremely knowledgeable, not just about the food, but the history and culture of Beijing as well. Not to mention, a stellar conversation partner and dining buddy!

I highly recommend this tour for anyone with a big appetite and a hunger for adventure!
