I don’t fully understand all the negative reviews. Either these people never really travelled in such places or are too soft. I consider myself to be extremely cautious and suspicious (maybe even too much), but there everything was just fine. Of course, one shouldn’t probably wear anything expensive and unecessary with you, and take good care of phone/money (that applies for any place though), but people are friendly, funny to talk with and if you are ok with bargaining you can get fair prices. Obviously, everyone will try to convince you to buy at their place (in the end its their living), but are not aggresive if you don’t want to buy anything. Just be polite and they will be as well :).
Hint: Prices are waaay cheaper than anywhere on your way to safari.

This is a very happening place in Nairobi and if you are a tourist you must go to this market and roam the streets around it including the Town Center.

But be very careful, try your absolute best to not look like a tourist, and carry nothing except a small amount of money. Wear no jewelry, because it takes them about a second to grab your chain and disappear.

If you're careful, then you're going to enjoy this local area filled with Kenyans going about their day and shopping.

But you must be careful. I am saying this from experience, my parents and I have travelled the world, and despite of this, my mother was wearing this very thin gold chain which got snatched in a matter of seconds.

Was more like a crowded Flea market..... or carnival. WAY too many vendors..... and could not get a break from the ones who relentlessly followed you until you either asked them to leave.... or looked at their products. Nairobi is a Dangerous city..... day or night...... maybe that's why most of my African friends told me to BE CAREFUL !!

The relatively small market is divided in different parts : meat - flowers- souvenirs/handycraft ! The souvenir vendors will push you to buy all kind of rubbish , but you will hardly find anything worth buying...

Lots of shops and people are friendly. Typical Kenyan items although we send better quality out on safari. We felt safe. One side is for tourists the other side is for food/produce for locals. Not really worth taking the time to search out. We had some time to kill and didn't want to spend a lot of money on other tours. You can walk there from most of central Nairobi. It's close to a large mosque which is a good landmark, but not very architecturally interesting.

Go Go Go! This is a market where you can barter for your goods and pick up some really nice souvenirs and gifts from your time in Kenya. We found that the bags and sandals were quite well made and strong, very impressive with intricate details.

Top tips:
Take enough money
Always barter in Kenyan Shilling
Separate money into smaller notes ( you can always top up main purse)
Go to the toilet BEFORE you go to the market to shop
Take snacks with you / bribes for young children in Buggys who may get bored
Take hand wash for later
Take a big bag to put all your shopping in (one of those roll up shopper bags are great from $/£ store)

We struggled to find a similar one stop shop market in Mombasa so if passing through Nairobi make sure you take the opportunity to visit.

Check opening / closing times before !

Good luck!

Avoid the middlemen and go directly to the shopowners /sellers. Always let them give you the first price then pay half the askingprice. This We learned from our kenyan friend. We made some good deals and had a good time.
We recomend this place to people Who like to bargain. 😃

This is a small market. It appears that there are two markets on Saturday. Not sure which one I was in. Lots of colorful items to see and choose from. I would suggest compare prices before you buy. People here are nice. Love calling you brothers and sisters.

One stop shop (market) for all your body and soul needs. Offers choma experience for those who dare to dare. The fresh fish and meat market is also very popular for its affordability and relatively good hygiene standards. While there you can shop around for Kenyan and other African themed souvenirs, be it the kikoys, khangas, sculptures of Africa themed paintings, this place got your back. Remember to get some flowers too and surprise someone!

This market is one for the experienced and strong person. The moment you enter the gate you are practically mobbed. You get no space to look around. In the end we must have had ten or twelve people following us up and down the small aisles and they all talked over the top of each other. I made a rookie mistake and was ripped off USD $50. When I tried to get my money back they went from speaking English to Swahili and I was not happy. Nobody would help and all the people who had been following us all of a sudden disappeared. It was straight out robbery. They took the money out of my hand. Fun to look around but the prices are the same if not cheaper at the airport. I do not recommend buying but a look is fun.
