- Mck JChicago, Illinois6 contributionsNice experienceWe booked out tour to this park with Ahambi Tours who had organized our Mount Kenya hike. We had no much time in Kenya and we were looking forward to experience a wildlife safari so we were recommended to take the day trip to the park which was a few minutes from our hotel. I would recommend this park for anyone traveling to Kenya with no much time. For us we did the day trip the same day we were departing since our flight was later in the evening that day.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 22, 2023
- saltsy372North Port, Florida364 contributionsWell worth while half day excursionThis was the first place we visited when we arrived in Nairobi. Was well worth while, before we headed out on our 2 week Safari. Just adds another park to the equation, especially if you only have 5 days or a week in Kenya. Saw a lot of the animals, lions, hippo, zebra, giraffe, impala, elephants, crocodile, gazelle etc, all with the back drop of Nairobi city. Not sure there are too many places in the world you can do that. Pretty good start to an incredible trip.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 25, 2023
- Bruno V1,229 contributionsAmazing National Park, right near the city, amustWe went when the dry period was coming to an end, so many animals seemed hungry. Still we could see lions, buffaloes, hippos, giraffes, ostriches, antilopes, lots of birds, etc. Really worth going. Entrance was 45 $ if I remember well, credit cards accepted.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 27, 2023
- Esther BHamilton, Canada50 contributionsGreat “junior “ Safari experience. Good option for a short visit to Kenya-really gives the feeling of being in a game paWe had our own driver and vehicle. Although we went on the game drive in the afternoon we saw lots of animals! We had spent a week on safari in Tanzania and never got so close to Rhinos! This park has a bit of a surreal feeling because in places you can see the city in the distance. The nature walk was fun but be ready to be led to a group of women trying to sell souvenirs.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 4, 2023
- Akmal AliSuva, Fiji328 contributionsA Good Mini-SafariIt is a good mini-safari in the middle of the urban jungle kind of. Hehe. Tourists pay more than locals. You have to pay cash. It is around USD 40. We went in a little car. It was not comfortable. I would say pay a bit more and go on professional high-elevated vehicles. The experience is great. You see animals in nature. Though through the park a big I guess rail or road over bridge goes beside. Good to go experience and just have fun. Please don't get out of your vehicle.Visited June 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 9, 2023
- eagle32016New York City, New York135 contributionsGreat for casual visits while in NairobiNairobi National Park is situated in 30 minutes from Central Nairobi. While it is adjacent to the city of Nairobi, it has rich habitat, including hippos, lions, giraffes, antelopes, buffaloes etc. The combination of Nairobi skyscrapers and wild animals provide a unique view. Park is easy to go around in half day. It may not be rich as bigger National parks in rural Kenya but it is very good for casual visits while in Nairobi.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 17, 2023
- alwaystravelsfPacifica, California459 contributionsGreat for 1/2 day tripDid a half day tour here with a local company. The entrance fee was about $43 and your guide can help you pay it as it’s through a government website. We were only in the park about 3 hours but saw plenty of animals including zebras, giraffes, gazelle, rhinoceros, lionesses and a buffalo.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 24, 2024
- Walter AWashington DC, District of Columbia7 contributionsSafari in the CityThis is an amazing experience! This is the only place on earth with a wildlife area in or abutting a large metropolitan city. The park fit the need for someone who wants to see African animals but who don't have time and money for a multi-day safari in other regions of Kenya. We saw sonny amazing sites in o e morning - giraffes, water buffalo, lions, hippopotamus and more. It was mind blowing. Our tour guide, who we contracted, privately, know the park like the back of his hand. We tended to be the first or early to see several animals before others arrived. We opted for a package that included the Sheldtrick Trust's Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Center. It cost us 100 per person. I registered through the eCitizen Kenya portal. This is a convenient way to register for the park but also other sites like museums. Once we got past some delays at the Main Gate we had a great experience. One big issue. There is no working washroom in the park. No portajohn , no nothing. We were escorted to a bathroom area, but it was not fit for use. This particularly bad for female visitors. This needs to be resolved.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 22, 2024
- cjr313Southport, North Carolina44 contributionsSafari in the city! This is one of the best experiences while visiting Nairobi. If you can't venture out beyond the city, this park gives you a varied number of animals to see in their natural environment. - Ian B4 contributionsIf you are self driving, allow plenty of time at the gate for entry….The online entry & payment form is tedious & time consuming. We were self drive & found it not user friendly at all. Even the lady who worked at our hotel described it as tiresome!! After travelling around Kruger National Park in South Africa, with an easy system (& so much cheaper) we were disappointed to spend so much time at an entry gate, waiting for help, as we found it impossible to upload our passport photos onto their system. We’ve had a great holiday & loved travelling in Kenya, however would like to pass on this information, especially as the entry price is set to rise considerably again later this year.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 13, 2024

3 out of 5 is perhaps harsh but I am reviewing the whole experience. To start off with it’s really too expensive. And queueing for the tickets to get in is farcically inefficient. Once in the park the game is not dense ( not like I remember it from my time being brought up in Kenya ) and you go for longish periods seeing nothing bouncing around on very uneven surfaces. But in the end we were probably lucky in what we saw. 3 lots of lions; 3 rhinos at close quarters; lots of buffalo; giraffes; warthogs; guinea fowl; a fleeting glimpse of a serval cat; impala; gazelle and a crocodile. But I imagine you could go some days and not be so lucky.

Kenya is known for its wildlife parks. I have sometimes heard a few people complaining that "there are no animals" in Nairobi National Park. When I am bored or I have 2 hours ahead, I just go there. I know it like my own garden. This is the best park to have the feeling of what was a safari when the human population was bringing less pressure on the wildlife: you won't be in a zoo, you will have to drive and think like a lion, if you want to see a lion. Observe winds, sun, water, grazers, footprints, hair in the shrubs... and you will find them. I have been more than 100 times there, and only twice I didn't see lions. I always saw Rhinos. I always saw buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, elands, etc, etc, etc... they are there, everywhere. Chose a good guide (a real one: unfortunately, many hotels propose guides that are just "good drivers used to the park trails" but not guides. You can even hire a ranger at the gate: better! Or a certified knowledgeable person. And then, you will have the best feeling of discovering animals in their real wild life. It is my favorite park in Kenya, don't ever miss it

Thursday 16 July 2020 we went out early morning and had an amazing experience.
The animals were out in their numbers. Zebras, Impalas, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Elands, I saw a male one for the very first time - huge chest and very stately.
The cherry on the cake was coming across 4 female lions and additional 2 at a distance. We also saw 5 Rhinos. What a treat.

Majority of the reviews I read before going to this National Park was that it was a good entry level safari. If I had to do it over again I would have skipped going to this park and spent more time visiting National Parks outside of the city. Overall, the experience was pretty average. The one male lion I was able to see in the park was pretty old and the animals inside of the park looked older and not as nice as other parks.

Tranquility smack in the middle of a noisy and dust city. The NNP is an excellent getaway that offers both convenience and action-packed viewing. I was lucky to witness a lion hunt on both my visits.
On the flip side however, the queueing system and payment procedures are cumbersome, slow, and lack innovation. Be ready to spend half an hour waiting in line to pay (I mean, is this Maasai MAra or NNP?)

It is located just south of the city - that's what makes it unique. If you want true wilderness escape or safari experience like no other then that's the place to visit .
It is home for variety of wildlife, big or small, from Lion to hyenas, giraffes to warthogs, caged snakes to "millipedes",baboons to monkeys, gazelles to antelopes... and more than 400 species of birds.
Our interaction with the animals was smooth and friendly - keeping safe distance from them . The tour guides are knowledgeable to all details pertaining wildlife.
Entrance fee is reasonable -not expensive and if your enthusiasm towards nature is intact then you can book and have a nice time at Nairobi tented camp inside the park.
Plan a day and visit the park and I promise it will be worth your time.It will give you more reason to appreciate nature and wildlife at large .

Amazing national park in such proximity to a major city. Opportunity to see four of the “Big Five” and much more. Definitely worth a visit even if heading out to Amboseli or the Masai Mara. Recommend hiring a guide or going on an organized game drive
This was our first visit to Kenya and first game drive. While we had technically signed up for a birding visit there was no way to miss the many mammals, large and smaller, that inhabited this relatively small national park that punches above its weight class considering where it is. The park is enclosed on 3 sides by Nairobi and the main gate accessible with just 30 minutes drive, traffic conditions permitting. While it is technically open to the south to allow migration there are lodges and agroindustrial complexes being developed that could potentially choke off the park.
Founded late during the British colonial rule in 1946 the park is Kenya’s first national park. It covers an area of only 45 Sq miles or 117 Sq kilometers; in contrast Amboseli NP is 151 Sq miles/ 392 Sq kilometers in size and is not surrounded by a city.
We were caught up in the chaos of a new payment system as has already been alluded to. Thankfully our guide was able to take care of it, albeit with quite a delay.
We did not see lions or leopards but we did not actively seek them out. We did spot over 80 bird species. We spotted quite a few ostriches as well as grey-crowned cranes. Of the “Big Five” we saw the Cape buffalo and white rhinos. Nairobi NP is apparently recognized for its rhinoceros program and is home to maybe 100 black rhinos and fewer white rhinos. The former are more reclusive and it was the white rhino we spotted late in the day; 2 adults and a calf.
We saw many of the other savanna herbivores of East Africa including Masai giraffe, plains zebra, impalas, Grants and Thompson’s gazelles, hartebeest, and elands. There were warthogs rooting trough the grass. We spotted a small “bloat” of hippos at one pond, and several Nile crocodiles at different spots in the park.
We were confined to the vehicle for the vast majority of our visit but stepped out at the approved sites including the ivory burning site, impala picnic, and at the hippo pools. We had an armed park ranger accompanying us as we took a short hike along the Mbagathi River which marks part of the southern border of the park. There were no hippos to be found.
With regards to monkeys we came across baboons, vervet monkeys and Sykes monkeys.
While there is much to see and do in the city, Nairobi NP is definitely worth a visit, even if only for a half-day visit.

Nairobi National Park is super close to the city and in a few minutes you are already among all these animals who roam freely in their habitat.
First, I was welcomed by a group of Naasai warriors at the entrance of the park, then, driving the car we found a family of baboons who were just staring at the car while eating, very quiet and almost friendly!
We saw plenty of animals at a close range, some of them too close I would say, but I never felt I was in danger. They are used to people and the cars driving around. Also, we made a few stops and in a complete silence, we noticed animals would get very close to the car.
Unfortunately we couldn’t see any lions because I was there midday and the tour guide mentioned the lions are most active early in the morning, or before sunset. The safari was absolutely a great idea while visiting Nairobi.

Nairobi National Park is the only wildlife refuge that is within a capital city! I was able to arrange through my hotel, The Boma Hotel, a solo safari for “1/2 a day (started at pick up from my hotel at 6am and return around 2:30).
Now first, most of the safari keeps and vans have a top that raises to allow you to see animals from a higher platform and safety. The typical vehicle can take 6 or 7 passengers comfortably and cost about $200USD for the safari tour. So, depending if you are 1, 2 or more will be your individual cost. I booked solo so I paid the $200 but it was such an incredible first day in Kenya! I say hippos, Cape Buffalo, lions, rhinos, giraffes, hyenas, various antelopes, and so many birds. My driver/guide was gracious and put in the effort to get me to see all of the animals. Please keep in mind that these are wild animals in a huge park territory so there is no guarantee you will see all the animals. Best time to go is early in the morning as in the afternoon heat the animals go into the shade.
My driver guide was Simon Ngigi and his WhatsApp number is: +254 719 475385
I highly recommend him.
The hotel I stayed at while in Nairobi was The Boma Hotel and it was super comfortable and secure with a great breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet (but can order off menu too) and a super spa - I had an awesome massage there. Before I traveled I used their service to set up my safari adventure. It was easy to do, reasonable to other’s and I got picked up and returned to my hotel. This gave me a real sense of service and safety as a solo female traveler.

We didn't see as much as we had hoped to see, but that probably had a lot to do with the time of day. Early mornings and late evenings are recommended if you would like to enjoy a lot of action, especially seeing the predator animals.
Still an overall enjoyable experience. Even without a guide, the paths/trails are well marked and a lot can be seen.
